The Effect Of Solvents And Processing Conditions On The Solvent Extraction Of Coal., Manish R. Bhole Jan 2002

The Effect Of Solvents And Processing Conditions On The Solvent Extraction Of Coal., Manish R. Bhole

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Solvent extraction of two bituminous coals to produce low-ash extract material was studied using solvents dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylacetamide (DMAC) and N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). The extraction efficiency was seen to be NMP>DMAC>DMF for the reflux extraction at the normal boiling point of the solvent. While the reflux-extraction of raw coal gave less than 40% yield, NMP-extraction at 3500C and elevated pressure gave higher yield (~68%). Hydrogenated coal gave very high extraction yield (>70%) even at room temperature. The performance of DMAC was comparable to that of NMP for the extraction of hydrogenated coal. The reflux extraction showed mass balance …

A Stratigraphic And Sedimentary Analysis Of The Purslane Formation Of Western Maryland., Jeffrey Ian O'Connell Jan 2002

A Stratigraphic And Sedimentary Analysis Of The Purslane Formation Of Western Maryland., Jeffrey Ian O'Connell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the past, outcrops of the Purslane Formation have been misidentified and neglected receiving little attention as a major Lower Mississippian unit. While exposures of this formation are rare, those that occur in western Maryland are worthy of extensive analysis. In particular are the exposures in the Oakland sand and gravel quarry, those along Deep Creek Lake in McHenry, and those above the third bench on the north cut face of the I-68 road cut through Sideling Hill. Through detailed stratigraphic and sedimentary analysis it is possible to correlate these deposits with each other as well as accurately reconstruct sedimentary …

The Relationship Between Family Communication Patterns And Locus Of Control., Andrea Marie Nardello Jan 2002

The Relationship Between Family Communication Patterns And Locus Of Control., Andrea Marie Nardello

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study used the newly developed Interpersonal-Goal Locus of Control scale (IGLOC) and the Revised Family Communication Patterns (RFCP) scale to investigate the relationship between people’s family communication growing up with their sense of locus of control later in life. It was hypothesized that family communication patterns would be related to the subscales of the IGLOC. College undergraduates (N=215) were given a survey which measured their locus of control and family communication patterns. Results of a Pearson Correlation show conversation-orientation to be positively related to internal, structural, other-owned, and negatively related to normative and phenomenal locus of control. Conformity-orientation was …

Differential Reinforcement Of Fixed-Interval Interresponse Times: Effects On Choice., Tammy Renee Wade Jan 2002

Differential Reinforcement Of Fixed-Interval Interresponse Times: Effects On Choice., Tammy Renee Wade

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Eight rats were exposed to a concurrent-chains procedure. Half of the rats chose between a fixed-interval schedule that required low rates of responding in the paced terminal link and a simple fixed-interval schedule in the unpaced terminal link. The other half chose between a fixed-interval schedule that required high rates of responding and a simple fixed-interval schedule. Interresponse-time criteria were based on the percentiles of a baseline distribution of interresponse times obtained for each rat. The criteria increased in stringency across conditions. Consistent changes in response rates as the result of the interresponse-time criteria were not obtained. Therefore, preference between …

Software And Tool For Analysis Of Manufacturing Processes (Stamp)., Sanket Dilip Mestry Jan 2002

Software And Tool For Analysis Of Manufacturing Processes (Stamp)., Sanket Dilip Mestry

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Performance of any machining process can be evaluated in terms of machining rate. Higher machining rate results in less machining time. This thesis presents a software tool wherein the computation of the process models to predict the process performance indicator such as material removal rate or cutting time, is carried out. The software has parametric models for Conventional Machining Processes, Advanced Machining Processes, Advanced Finishing Processes and Cutting Processes. It allows the user to perform parametric analysis, which assist in understanding the influence of various parameters on the process performance measures. The software can also be used to share process …

Those Who Remember The Past May Not Be Condemned To Repeat It, Stephan Landsman Jan 2002

Those Who Remember The Past May Not Be Condemned To Repeat It, Stephan Landsman

Michigan Law Review

In The Hague, Slobodan Milosevic is on trial for crimes committed in Bosnia, Kosovo and Croatia; in Arusha, Tanzania, Jean Paul Akayasu, a Rwandan bourgmestre, was convicted of genocide; in London, Augusto Pinochet was detained and adjudged amenable to an arrest warrant issued by a Spanish magistrate for acts of torture carried out in Chile; in Belgium, a Hutu Roman Catholic former mother superior was convicted of complicity in the Rwandan genocide; and in Rome a treaty was signed commencing the process that will result in the creation of the International Criminal Court ("ICC"). All these events underscore the startling …

The Contested Right To Vote, Richard Briffault Jan 2002

The Contested Right To Vote, Richard Briffault

Michigan Law Review

For those who believe the United States is a representative democracy with a government elected by the people, the events of late 2000 must have been more than a little disconcerting. In the election for our most important public office - our only truly national office - the candidate who received the most popular votes was declared the loser while his second place opponent, who had received some 540,000 fewer votes, was the winner. This result turned on the outcome in Florida, where approximately 150,000 ballots cast were found not to contain valid votes. Further, due to flaws in ballot …

A Study Of Student Characteristics And Their Effect On Student Satisfaction With Online Courses., Karen Elizabeth Kirtley Jan 2002

A Study Of Student Characteristics And Their Effect On Student Satisfaction With Online Courses., Karen Elizabeth Kirtley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between selected student characteristics and the level of student satisfaction in online courses at Marshall University. The study examined characteristics as identified in the literature and made conclusions to support or refute previous research. A descriptive research design was used to examine the relationship between the student's age, gender, marital status, employment status, motivation to enroll in online course, expectation of course and experience in course with student satisfaction. Research questions were developed to examine this relationship. The population for this study was N = 554 students who enrolled in …
