Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

A series of 30 surgical resection materials of patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and 10 with adenocarcinoma (AC) were analyzed histologically and by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to demonstrate whether human papillomavirus (HPV) has a role in the etiology of esophageal cancers. Epithelial changes suggesting HPV infection were histopathologically detected in 19 of 30 (63.3%) SCC and in 4 of 10 (40%) AC cases. By PCR, HPV type 16 and/or type 18 DNA were detected in 10 of 30 (33.3%) SCC and HPV type 18 DNA alone was detected in 1 of 10 (10%) AC cases. Histopathologic findings related …

An Analysis Of Anatolian Human Femur Anthropometry, Taner Zi̇ylan, Khalil Awadh Murshed

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Femoral anthropometry from two different ages of Anatolian population groups was evaluated according to normal parametric measurements. Eleven femoral measurements with collo-diaphyseal angles were obtained from 36 right and 36 left intact human adult femora of a contemporary Central Anatolian population. For this purpose, a sliding caliper, osteometric board, tapeline and gonometer were used. Obtained data were statistically analyzed by Student's t-test and the Pearson correlation coefficient. Our results were compared with a previous study's results obtained from human femora from the Şeyh Höyük area (southern Anatolia) dating back to the Chalcolithic Age (5100-3000 B.C). The results of this study …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Antiplatelet therapy reduces the risk of subsequent ischemic events in patients suffering from acute myocardial infarction (AMI). In this respect, the multi-agent therapy to be used along with aspirin remains to be determined. In this study, ticlopidine was tried in AMI for its potential additive effects over aspirin. Ninety patients with similar clinical characteristics were involved and were followed up for 3 and 6 months. All patients were assigned to receive ticlopidine plus aspirin or aspirin alone. Major cardiac events such as death and reinfarction were primary end-points whereas the need for revascularization was the secondary end-point at 3 and …

Inhibition Of Leukemia Cell Proliferation Using C-Myb Antisense Oligonucleotides, Edi̇z Demi̇rpençe, Janina Ratajczak

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Antisense oligodeoxynucleotides (AS-ODNs) are short DNA sequences synthesized complementary to the mRNA and they inhibit the expression of the target gene by forming a mRNA-DNA duplex. This strategy can be considered to be an alternative therapy for cancers characterized by amplified oncogene activity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory effect of AS-ODNs on two human leukemia cell lines (HL-60 and K562). Cells were treated with c-myb AS-ODNs at two different concentrations and cell proliferation was monitored on the 5^{th} and 7^{th} days of culture. Sense and scrambled ODNs were used as the control. In both cell …

Levy-Like Continuity Theorems For Convergence In Distribution, Theodore P. Hill, Ulrich Krengel Jan 2002

Levy-Like Continuity Theorems For Convergence In Distribution, Theodore P. Hill, Ulrich Krengel

Research Scholars in Residence

Levy’s classical continuity theorem states that if the pointwise limit of a sequence of characteristic functions exists, then the limit function itself is a characteristic function if and only if the limit function satisfies a single universal limit condition (in his case, the limit at zero is one), in which case the underlying measures converge weakly to the probability measure represented by the limit function. It is the purpose of this article to give a number of direct analogs of L´evy’s theorem for other probability-representing functions including moment sequences, maximal moment sequences, mean-residual-life functions, Hardy-Littlewood maximal functions, and failure-rate functions. …

Random Probability Measures With Given Mean And Variance Running Title: Random Probability Measures, Lisa Bloomer, Theodore P. Hill Jan 2002

Random Probability Measures With Given Mean And Variance Running Title: Random Probability Measures, Lisa Bloomer, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

This article describes several natural methods of constructing random probability measures with prescribed mean and variance, and focuses mainly on a technique which constructs a sequence of simple (purely discrete, finite number of atoms) distributions with the prescribed mean and with variances which increase to the desired variance. Basic properties of the construction are established, including conditions guaranteeing full support of the generated measures, and conditions guaranteeing that the final measure is discrete. Finally, applications of the construction method to optimization problems such as Plackett’s Problem are mentioned, and to experimental determination of average-optimal solutions of certain control problems.

Self-Assembly Of Spatially Separated Silicon Structures By Si Heteroepitaxy On Ni Disilicide, Elena A. Guliants, Chunhai Ji, Wayne A. Anderson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A nonlithographic approach to produce self-assembled spatially separated Si structures for nanoelectronic applications was developed, employing the metal-induced silicon growth. Densely packed Si whiskers, 500–800 nm thick and up to 2500 nm long, were obtained by magnetron sputtering of Si on a 25 nm thick Ni prelayer at 575 °C. The nucleation of the NiSi2 compound at the Ni–Si interface followed by the Si heteroepitaxy on the lattice-matched NiSi2 is suggested to be the driving force for the whisker formation.
