"The Neumeister Collection Of Chorale Preludes Of The Bach Circle": An Examination Of The Chorale Preludes Of J. S. Bach And Their Usage As Service Music And Pedagogical Works, Sara Ann Jones

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

One of the most significant discoveries of the twentieth century was the finding of an unpublished compendium of German Baroque keyboard music in 1982 in the archives of the John Herrick Music Library, Yale University, by musicologists Christoph Wolff and Hans-Joachim Schultz and Yale University librarian Harold E. Samuel. The collection, which was entitled LM 4708: THE NEUMEISTER COLLECTION OF CHORALE PRELUDES OF THE BACH CIRCLE, contains eighty-two previously unknown chorale preludes by several prominent German Baroque organists including Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706), Johann Michael Bach (1648-1694), Johann Christoph Bach (1642-1703), and Johann Sebastian Bach (1658-1750). Historically, it is an important …

The Post-Translational Methylation Of Arginine In The Glycine Arginine Rich Region Of Cho Nucleoin, Gregory James Pellar Jan 2002

The Post-Translational Methylation Of Arginine In The Glycine Arginine Rich Region Of Cho Nucleoin, Gregory James Pellar

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Nucleolin is a nucleolar protein important for ribosome biogenesis. Nucleolin contains a conserved glycine arginine rich (GAR) domain near its carboxy terminus. GAR domains are defined by repeating tri-peptide, (arginine -glycine-glycine (RGG)) motifs. The arginine in the RGG motif is post-translationally modified by dimethylation on one of the two guanido nitrogens. Although arginine methylation was identified over 30 years ago, the function of this modification remains unknown. The GAR domain of nucleolin is important for nucleic acid binding and for nucleolar localization of nucleolin. This dissertation describes investigates possible in vivo interactions between nucleolin and other nucleolar proteins involved in …

Transient Thermomechanical Interactions Of Shaft-Bushing Pair In Bearings - A Finite Element Study, Rajesh Krithivasan Jan 2002

Transient Thermomechanical Interactions Of Shaft-Bushing Pair In Bearings - A Finite Element Study, Rajesh Krithivasan

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis presents a finite element parametric study of the transient thermomechanical interactions of shaft-bushing pairs in bearings to gain insight into the nature of two categories of failures encountered in practice. The first type of failure deals with occurrence of the so-called thermally induced seizure (TIS) during the start-up period followed by an investigation of TIS due to a transient flow-disturbance. The second part deals with the thermomechanical interactions of pin-bushing assembly under heavy oscillating loads where the failure is by TIS and/or thermal galling. An extensive set of parametric simulations covering a wide range of loads, speeds, operating …

Concerto For Trumpet And Orchestra, Matthew Scott Schaffner Jan 2002

Concerto For Trumpet And Orchestra, Matthew Scott Schaffner

LSU Master's Theses

Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra (2002) is a three-movement composition for orchestra and solo trumpet. Each movement has a prominent theme, although there are themes that pervade the entire composition. The main element in the work is a two-note rhythmic statement. This two-note statement unifies the piece. Another prominent idea is a pitch collection of three consecutive minor seconds and their inversions. The first movement, Incipience, begins with a slow foreshadowing of the work’s main themes. Following the introduction is a quick fanfare that leads back to the opening material. A trumpet cadenza develops from the introductory ideas, which leads …

A Correlation Between The Optical And Mechanical Properties Of Novel Polysilane/Polysiloxane Nanocomposites, Sungho Lee Jan 2002

A Correlation Between The Optical And Mechanical Properties Of Novel Polysilane/Polysiloxane Nanocomposites, Sungho Lee

LSU Master's Theses

Polysilanes are ¥ò-conjugated conductive polymers with a one-dimensional Si backbone and organic substituted side chains. The conventional Wurtz-type coupling reaction has been used for preparing various alkyl substituted polysilanes, i.e. poly(di-n-hexyl)silane and poly(hexylmethyl)silane. For each polysilane examples with methoxy (-OCH3) and allyl (-CH2CH=CH2) end caps have been prepared. The solution UV absorption characteristics of the polysilanes at room temperature have been measured, from which the wavelength maximum of the UV-VIS absorption and the absorptivity have been obtained. Allyl end capped polysilanes have the same wavelength maximum as methoxy end capped polysilanes. However, the absorptivities of allyl end capped polysilanes are …

Polyamines As Olfactory Stimuli In Goldfish, Shane Howell Rolen Jan 2002

Polyamines As Olfactory Stimuli In Goldfish, Shane Howell Rolen

LSU Master's Theses

The effects of polyamines as odorants to goldfish olfactory receptors were investigated by in vivo electrophysiological recordings. Electro-olfactogram (EOG) recordings indicated that polyamines (putrescine, cadaverine and spermine) are potent olfactory stimuli for goldfish with estimated electrophysiological thresholds of 10-100nM, similar to that for L-arginine, the most stimulatory amino acid. Although thresholds were similar, the magnitude of the EOG responses to intermediate and high concentrations of polyamines dwarfed those to amino acids and single amine containing compounds (amylamine and butylamine). The EOG responses to 0.1mM putrescine, cadaverine and spermine were, respectively, 4.2x, 4.3x and 10.3x that of the standard, 0.1mM L-arginine. …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Figural Memory Performance In Persons With Epilepsy, Deborah Schrager Hoffnung Jan 2002

A Qualitative Analysis Of Figural Memory Performance In Persons With Epilepsy, Deborah Schrager Hoffnung

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study examined nonverbal memory in patients with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) on a figural reproduction task, the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF). The Boston Qualitative Scoring System (BQSS) was used to examine whether qualitative features of ROCF performance could discriminate between those with right and left TLE. As predicted, seizure groups did not differ on a standard quantitative scoring system for the ROCF. Contrary to prediction, the right TLE group did not perform more poorly on BQSS measures of quality or organization, and they did not have greater difficulty recalling the figure after a delay. There was a trend …

The Use Of Geographic Information Systems To Study Repeat Victims Of Domestic Abuse In The Waterloo Region Of Ontario, Canada, Claudia Saheb

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The importance of repeat victims as an effective target for crime prevention measures has been widely recognised. Many have studied repeat victims of property crimes, but few have studied repeat victims of personal crimes and their spatial distribution. This study used 1996 and 1997 crime data from the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) in Ontario, Canada and focused specifically on domestic-abuse-related crimes and repeat victims of those crimes. Various methods of mapping and analysis were used to better understand the spatial distribution of those crimes and vulnerability of the victims. Standardised crime rates and crime density were calculated. Thematic and …

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Religious faith and beliefs appear to play an important role in the lives of many individuals and are the topic of much research. The present study investigated the relationship between religious faith and forgiveness in a sample (n = 196) of college students. Students were asked to complete the Heartland Forgiveness Scale and the Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith Questionnaire. Analyses of scores on both measures revealed a positive, significant correlation between these constructs, suggesting that there is a meaningful relationship between religious faith and the tendency to forgive. Implications and directions for further research are discussed.

Exit Strategy: State Legal Discretion To Environmentally Sculpt The Deregulating Electric Environment, Steven Ferrey Jan 2002

Exit Strategy: State Legal Discretion To Environmentally Sculpt The Deregulating Electric Environment, Steven Ferrey

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

Exit fees are a key regulatory tool to allocate the risk of power deregulation. Forty percent of the states have elected to restructure and at least significantly deregulate their retail power sectors. This involves a substantial change in the legal rules that govern one of the essential segments of the economy. Deregulation allows power consumers to leave traditional monopoly utility supply and shift to competitive sellers of power, and in certain states, many consumers have done so. How can states treat the stranded costs of the monopoly utilities? This article explores the issue of exit fee regulation of the various …

The Radiation-Induced Degradation Of Poly(Diene Sulfones) As X-Ray Resists, Gina Marie Calderon Jan 2002

The Radiation-Induced Degradation Of Poly(Diene Sulfones) As X-Ray Resists, Gina Marie Calderon

LSU Master's Theses

The microlithographic process, essential in the fabrication of silicon chip integrated circuits, uses high-energy radiation to transfer a pattern onto a thin film of polymer resist. Pattern transfer occurs by modifying the properties (solubility or volatility) of the polymer film exposed to radiation. Poly(olefin sulfones) exhibit a high sensitivity to x-rays, which is a desirable property for polymer resists, but typically undergo a glass transition around room temperature and a thermal degradation at moderate temperatures. The thermal properties of the poly(olefin sulfones) reduce the processing latitude for industrial microelectronics applications. Poly(unsaturated olefin sulfones) containing a carbon-carbon double bond in the …

Plasmid-Mediated Expression Of Foreign Genes In Ehrlichia Canis, Langston Dolphus Hull Jan 2002

Plasmid-Mediated Expression Of Foreign Genes In Ehrlichia Canis, Langston Dolphus Hull

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Ehrlichia canis is the etiologic agent of “tropical canine pancytopenia”, or canine ehrlichiosis. The impetus for this research was to overcome the lack of any reliable means of elucidating the genetic profiles of these illusive and historically difficult to manipulate organisms. The use of a broad-host range plasmid greatly facilitated the determination of an electro-transformation protocol. The transforming plasmid possesses a chloramphenicol antibiotic resistance gene marker (chloramphenicol acetyltransferase [CAT] gene), and a visual reporter gene marker, the Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) gene. With primer sets designed to specifically amplify these two plasmid encoded gene markers, thus verifying the presence of …

Intrinsic Biodegradation Potential Of Crude Oil In Salt Marshes, Julius Enock Jan 2002

Intrinsic Biodegradation Potential Of Crude Oil In Salt Marshes, Julius Enock

LSU Master's Theses

Understanding the influence of different perturbations on the fate of spilled oil in marine ecosystems is useful in assessing the environmental impact and remedial investigation. The effect of flooding and spill recurrence on the fate of an experimental crude oil spill (2 L/m2) was investigated using salt marsh intact cores, incubated for about 3 months, by monitoring residual petroleum hydrocarbons, heterotrophic microbial activity (fluorescein diacetate assay) and soluble organic carbon (SOC). For the flooding study, biodegradation rate of crude oil (with half-lives varying between 16.50 and 49.51 days and turnover times between 23.81 and 71.43 days) and microbial …

Free Will And Responsiblity: Indeterminism And Its Problems, Troy Dwayne Fassbender Jan 2002

Free Will And Responsiblity: Indeterminism And Its Problems, Troy Dwayne Fassbender

LSU Master's Theses

This work is devoted to criticisms of libertarian philosophers who attempt to provide an account of agent freedom that relies solely upon indeterminism. First, the philosophy of Robert Kane is examined. I argue that Kane's account does not succeed as an intelligible libertarian account of freedom and at best makes compatibilist accounts more intuitive. I next examine objections to indeterminist accounts as lodged by Galen Strawson, Thomas Nagel, Daniel Dennett, and Richard Double before turning to an analysis of a debate among Peter van Inwagen, John Martin Fischer and Mark Ravizza. Van Inwagen argues that we are seldom able to …

Techniques To Explore Time-Related Correlation In Large Datasets, Sumeet Dua Jan 2002

Techniques To Explore Time-Related Correlation In Large Datasets, Sumeet Dua

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The next generation of database management and computing systems will be significantly complex with data distributed both in functionality and operation. The complexity arises, at least in part, due to data types involved and types of information request rendered by the database user. Time sequence databases are generated in many practical applications. Detecting similar sequences and subsequences within these databases is an important research area and has generated lot of interest recently. Previous studies in this area have concentrated on calculating similitude between (sub)sequences of equal sizes. The question of unequal sized (sub)sequence comparison to report similitude has been an …

Comparison Of Numerical And Experimental Results Of Four Liquid Spray Combustors, Dong Hu Jan 2002

Comparison Of Numerical And Experimental Results Of Four Liquid Spray Combustors, Dong Hu

LSU Master's Theses

Validation of CFD predictions for liquid spray combustion application is a challenging task due to difficulties in both modeling and experimental measurements. Validation is considered to be a key step for successful CFD predictions of combustion systems. The goals of this thesis are threefold: (1) validation of models used for spray combustion predictions, (2) using the validated predictions to explain steady flow and combustion physics, and (3) using the validated procedure to simulate conditions where unstable combustion behavior is observed experimentally, and to explore if such unstable behavior can be predicted correctly. The model validation is done with respect to …

Imazethapyr controlled barnyardgrass 95 to 97% with a soil application at 87 or 70 g/ha fb 53 or 70 g/ha EPOST or LPOST. A single EPOST application of imazethapyr at 140 g/ha controlled barnyardgrass and rice yield was equal to or above those treatments receiving two applications of imazethapyr. Research was also conducted at Crowley, LA and Rayne, LA to evaluate the …

Nonlinear State And Parameter Estimation And Model Predictive Control Of Nitrogen Purification Columns, Shoujun Bian Jan 2002

Nonlinear State And Parameter Estimation And Model Predictive Control Of Nitrogen Purification Columns, Shoujun Bian

LSU Master's Theses

High-purity distillation columns are highly nonlinear systems. Nonlinear Model Predictive Control of these columns is challenging. The complexity of a first-principles model of a multi-stage distillation column, which involves a large number of differential and algebraic equations, makes Model Predictive Control computationally expensive. This thesis has focused on Nonlinear Model Predictive Control based on a simplified wave model of a distillation column; the simplified wave model consists of only one ordinary differential equation along with several algebraic equations. The predictive capability of the nonlinear wave model can be improved significantly through the application of nonlinear state estimation. Off-line estimation by …
