Biotechnological Production Of A Stereoselective Scfv Antibody Fragment, Lour-Evelyn Lezondra Jan 2002

Biotechnological Production Of A Stereoselective Scfv Antibody Fragment, Lour-Evelyn Lezondra

Honors Capstones

Antibodies are proteins of the immune system that exhibit exquisite specificity to their binding partners, called antigens. Binding occurs at the hypervariable region (Fv), which is capable of discriminating even enantiomeric molecules. By targeting on the DNA sequences that code for Fv and expressing it as a protein, the binding properties of an antibody can be assessed. In this project, the heavy and light chains of the Fv region (Vh and V[_) of an anti-amino acid antibody (anti-phenylalanine 67.36) were linked using a short nucleotide linker and four primers designed from previously determined sequences of Vh and V|_. The resulting …

Building My Own Business: A Feasibility Study, Brie Zabor

Honors Capstones

My project was to conduct a feasibility study to examine whether or not my idea for a new business was possible. My idea was to open a discount, designer clothing store in DeKalb, Illinois. I began my study by defining and researching how to actually conduct a study and explaining the benefits and features of my products and services. Next I analyzed the industry in which my business would be operating. Third, I defined who my target market was and who my customers would be. Fourth, I conducted a focus group and reported the results. Lastly, I investigated how I …

This paper analyzes the auditor independence issues debated during the Accounting Wars, and their applicability to present and future impacts stemming from the Enron fallout. This study documents SEC proposed independence changes and the resulting conflicts between Big Five accounting firms and the SEe. Past and current proposals are examined separately. Relationships or similarities are noted. Based on the progression of past and present proposals and mandates, a determination of future changes is made. A strong relationship exists between the past and present proposals which indicates substantial changes within financial reporting, the elimination of consulting services, and the creation of …

Gender, Crime, And Desistance: Toward A Theory Of Cognitive Transformation, Peggy C. Giordano, Stephen A. Cernkovich, Jennifer L. Rudolph Jan 2002

Gender, Crime, And Desistance: Toward A Theory Of Cognitive Transformation, Peggy C. Giordano, Stephen A. Cernkovich, Jennifer L. Rudolph

his article analyzes data derived from the first detailed long-term follow-up of a sample of serious adolescent female delinquents and similarly situated males. Neither marital attachment nor job stability, factors frequently associated with male desistance from crime, were strongly related to female or male desistance. A symbolic-interactionist perspective on desistance is developed as a counterpoint to Sampson and Laub's theory of informal social control, and life history narratives are used to illustrate the perspective. This cognitive theory is generally compatible with a control approach but (a) adds specificity regarding underlying change mechanisms, (b) explains some negative cases, and (c) fits …

Site-Specific Modification Of De Novo Designed Coiled-Coil Polypeptides With Inorganic Redox Complexes, Anna Fedorova, Michael Y. Ogawa Jan 2002

Site-Specific Modification Of De Novo Designed Coiled-Coil Polypeptides With Inorganic Redox Complexes, Anna Fedorova, Michael Y. Ogawa

Chemistry Faculty Publications

A stepwise procedure for preparing of site-specific binuclear metallopeptides is described. The modification procedure involves the alkylation of a cysteine side chain by reaction with [Ru(bpy)(2)(phen-ClA)](2+), where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine and phen-ClA = 5-chloroacetaniido-1,10-phenanthroline, followed by the coordination of a ruthenium pentammine complex to a histidine residue located elsewhere along the sequence. The apo and metalated versions of the peptides C10H21(30-mer) and H10C21(30-mer) display circular dichroism spectra having minima at 208 and 222 nm, with theta(222)/theta(208) = 1.04 to indicate that these peptides exist as a-helical coiled-coils in aqueous solution. When the ruthenium polypyridyl complex is attached to C10H21(30-mer), the …

Chrysler Leverages Its Suppliers' Improvement Suggestions, Janet L. Hartley, Bertie M. Greer, Seungwood Park

Management Faculty Publications

We examined Chrysler's SCORE (supplier cost reduction effort) supplier-suggestion process from the perspectives of Chrysler and its suppliers. Chrysler used SCORE to save over $2 billion and to build collaborative relationships with its suppliers. In our study, we observed four elements in Chrysler and its suppliers' organizations that contributed to SCORE'S success: (1) designating a process champion, (2) engaging suppliers in the process, (3) motivating em ployees, and (4) facilitating evaluation and implementation. Companies designing a supplier suggestion process should consider ways to reduce delays during evaluation, to minimize the number of low value suggestions, and to involve the entire …

Sustainable Results In Urban Middle Schools: How Principals Use Systems Thinking To Lead Effective Change, Peggy H. Burke Jan 2002

Sustainable Results In Urban Middle Schools: How Principals Use Systems Thinking To Lead Effective Change, Peggy H. Burke

Educational Studies Dissertations

This study presents the stories of four urban middle school principals engaged in reform that is grounded on the core principle that every early adolescent has the capacity for high-level intellectual development. Data collected over two years through formal interviews and informal conversations with principals and teachers, school and district surveys and reports, student test data, and personal observations were analyzed from a systems thinking theoretical framework to assess each principal's ability to implement reform that produced sustainable results. A systems thinking framework articulates the importance of a leader's ability to: 1) conceptualize the whole and recognize patterns; 2) aspire …

Dispelling The Myth Of The Non-Singer: Changing The Ways Singing Is Perceived, Implemented And Nurtured In The Classroom, Louise M. Pascale Jan 2002

Dispelling The Myth Of The Non-Singer: Changing The Ways Singing Is Perceived, Implemented And Nurtured In The Classroom, Louise M. Pascale

Educational Studies Dissertations

Many American classroom teachers fervently claim not to be able to sing and are considered 'non-singers.' Studies reported here reveal a paradox : put in a context where singing is approached from another perspective, those same people can and do sing. How did they come to think of themselves otherwise? A close look at the terms 'singer' and 'singing' reveals the ways in which the meanings of these words are socially and culturally constructed.

Investigation Of The Relationship Between Middle School Science Teachers' Knowledge And Beliefs Regarding The Coherence And Connections Among Science Concepts And Their Classroom Practices, Francis Eberle Jan 2002

Investigation Of The Relationship Between Middle School Science Teachers' Knowledge And Beliefs Regarding The Coherence And Connections Among Science Concepts And Their Classroom Practices, Francis Eberle

Educational Studies Dissertations

This phenomenological investigation used an inductive qualitative research approach with multiple instruments and processes including a survey, interviews, classroom observations, concept maps, and classroom materials for data. The results suggest that middle school science teachers' ability to teach science in a connected and coherent fashion may be tied to their mental schema for organizing science ideas, curriculum materials, and their reflections on what they are teaching and why.
