Learning To Produce Speech With An Altered Vocal Tract: The Role Of Auditory Feedback, Jeffery A. Jones, Kevin Munhall Oct 2002

Learning To Produce Speech With An Altered Vocal Tract: The Role Of Auditory Feedback, Jeffery A. Jones, Kevin Munhall

Psychology Faculty Publications

Modifying the vocal tract alters a speaker’s previously learned acoustic–articulatory relationship. This study investigated the contribution of auditory feedback to the process of adapting to vocal-tract modifications. Subjects said the word /tɑs/ while wearing a dental prosthesis that extended the length of their maxillary incisor teeth. The prosthesis affected /s/ productions and the subjects were asked to learn to produce ‘‘normal’’ /s/’s. They alternately received normal auditory feedback and noise that masked their natural feedback during productions. Acoustic analysis of the speakers’ /s/ productions showed that the distribution of energy across the spectra moved toward that of normal, unperturbed production …

Distributions Of Nobel Metal Pd And Pt In Mesoporous Silica, J. Arbiol, A. Cabot, J. R. Morante, Fanglin Chen, Meilin Liu

Faculty Publications

Mesoporous silicananostructures have been synthesized and loaded with Pd and Pt catalytic noble metals. It is found that Pd forms small nanoclusters (3–5 nm) on the surface of the mesoporous structure whereas Pt impregnation results in the inclusion of Pt nanostructures within the silica hexagonal pores (from nanoclusters to nanowires). It is observed that these materials have high catalyticproperties for CO–CH4CO–CH4CO–CH4 combustion, even in a thick film form. In particular, results indicate that the Pt and Pd dispersed in mesoporous silica are catalytically active as a selective filter for gas sensors.

A Multiple Hypothesis Markov Location Approach To Tracking Moving Targets With Distributed Sensors, Weihong Zhang, Weixiong Zhang Oct 2002

A Multiple Hypothesis Markov Location Approach To Tracking Moving Targets With Distributed Sensors, Weihong Zhang, Weixiong Zhang

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Tracking or localizing a moving target is a difficult task in a distributed sensor network, due to the lack of knowledge of the target's motion and signal noises. Most existing approaches to the problem use only sensory information and may require accurate target's motion models. In this paper, we present a Markovian approach that combines dynamically estimated target's motion models with received sensory information. Without a given motion model, this approach localizes a target in two steps, a location prediction step using dynamically generated motion models and a location correction step integrating sensory readings. Our experimental analysis shows that our …

Stoneflies (Plecoptera) Of Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, B. C. Kondratieff, Richard A. Lechleitner Oct 2002

Stoneflies (Plecoptera) Of Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, B. C. Kondratieff, Richard A. Lechleitner

Western North American Naturalist

Mount Rainier National Park, with an area of 95,356 ha, is approximately one-third as large as the state of Rhode Island. The lowest point is 490 m in elevation in the southeastern corner near where the Ohanapecosh River crosses the southern boundary. Columbia Crest is the highest point at 4392 m. The entire park is a rugged landscape marked by the major topographical feature, Mount Rainier, comprising over 25,899 ha, almost one-third of the park. The park lies entirely west of the crest line of the Cascade Range. Most streams in the park originate on Mount Rainier; however, several large …

Vegetation Response To Prescribed Fire In Dinosaur National Monument, Barry L. Perryman, Richard A. Olson, Stephen Petersburg, Tamara Naumann Oct 2002

Vegetation Response To Prescribed Fire In Dinosaur National Monument, Barry L. Perryman, Richard A. Olson, Stephen Petersburg, Tamara Naumann

Western North American Naturalist

Much of western North America is dominated by dense, monotypic, late seral stands of big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.). These stands often have depauperate understories with limited species richness, diversity, and herbaceous cover. The National Park Service at Dinosaur National Monument, Colorado, is using both strategic and natural prescribed fire in Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis Beetle and Young) communities to foster intra-community (α-scale) and landscape diversity. This study analyzed an accumulated foliar cover data set between paired burn and control areas on 6 different sites during the last 20 years. Across the monitoring period, mean …

Morphological And Genetic Variation Among Populations Of The Rare Kachina Daisy (Erigeron Kachinensis) From Southeastern Utah, Loreen Allphin, Michael D. Windham

Western North American Naturalist

Erigeron kachinensis, the Kachina daisy, is a rare species restricted to canyons in southeastern Utah. The species is known to exhibit low fecundity due to low percent fertilization of ovules and high percent abortion of fertilized ovules. Previous reproductive studies suggest that low fecundity is a consequence of small population size and inbreeding depression. This study examines genetic diversity within and among populations of E. kachinensis in Natural Bridges National Monument using enzyme electrophoresis. Field populations are found to have significantly different morphologies. However, morphological differences were less pronounced among populations grown in the greenhouse. The Kachina daisy exhibits …
