The Choice Between Joint Venture And Wholly Owned Subsidiary: An Institutional Perspective, Daphne W. Yiu, Shige Makino Nov 2002

The Choice Between Joint Venture And Wholly Owned Subsidiary: An Institutional Perspective, Daphne W. Yiu, Shige Makino

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The study of foreign entry-mode choice has been based almost exclusively on transaction-cost theory. This theory focuses mainly on the impacts of firm- and industry-specific factors on the choice of entry mode, taking the effects of country-specific contextual factors as constant or less important. In contrast, the institutional perspective emphasizes the importance of the influence of both institutional forces embedded in national environments and decision makers' cognitive constraints on the founding conditions of new ventures. Still, this theoretical perspective has yet to provide insights into how institutional factors influence the choice of foreign entry mode. The primary goal of the …

Venture Capital And Economic Growth: An Industry Overview And Singapore's Experience, Francis Koh, Winston T. H. Koh

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper provides an overview of the venture capital industry, and its development in Asia and Singapore. Venture capital plays an important role in innovation and economic growth. Indeed, the resurgence of the United States as a technology leader is intimately linked to the success of Silicon Valley. As Singapore enters the next phase of economic development, the creation of internal engines of growth is an urgent task. The Singapore government has done much to provide an environment for entrepreneurship to thrive. Its success at replicating the Silicon Valley culture will be important for Singapore’s future economic success.

A Corrected Plug-In Method For The Quantile Confidence Interval Of A Transformed Regression, Zhenlin Yang, Yiu Kuen Tse Nov 2002

A Corrected Plug-In Method For The Quantile Confidence Interval Of A Transformed Regression, Zhenlin Yang, Yiu Kuen Tse

Research Collection School Of Economics

In this paper we propose an analytically corrected plug-in method for constructing confidence intervals of the conditional quantiles of a response variable with data transformation. The method can be applied to (i) a general conditional regression quantile, (ii) a general monotonic transformation, and (iii) a transformation model with heteroscedastic errors. Our results extend those in Yang (2002a), in which the median of a response variable under the Box-Cox transformation with homoscedastic errors was considered. A Monte Carlo experiment is conducted to compare the performance of the corrected plug-in method, the plug-in method and the delta method. The corrected plug-in method …

Corporate Ownership Structure And The Evolution Of Bankruptcy Law: Lessons From The United Kingdom, John Armour, Brian R. Cheffins, David A. Skeel, Jr. Nov 2002

Corporate Ownership Structure And The Evolution Of Bankruptcy Law: Lessons From The United Kingdom, John Armour, Brian R. Cheffins, David A. Skeel, Jr.

Vanderbilt Law Review

The corporate world today subdivides into rival systems of dispersed and concentrated ownership, each characterized by different corporate governance structures. The United States falls into the former category, whereas major industrial rivals such as Japan and Germany are members of the latter. The past decade has seen intense academic debate over possible explanations for the different systems of ownership and control in key developed economies. Anecdotal evidence suggesting that market forces may be serving to destabilize traditional business structures and foster some form of convergence in a U.S. direction has given the controversy powerful current relevance.

For those seeking to …

Introduction To The Symposium "Convergence On Delaware: Corporate Bankruptcy And Corporate Governance", Robert K. Rasmussen, Charles M. Elson Nov 2002

Introduction To The Symposium "Convergence On Delaware: Corporate Bankruptcy And Corporate Governance", Robert K. Rasmussen, Charles M. Elson

Vanderbilt Law Review

Bankruptcy is back. The use of Chapter 11 by large, publicly held firms was a subject of much debate in the academic and popular press in the late 1980s and the early 1990s. Firms such as Texaco, Revco, LTV, Federated Department Stores, Maxwell Communications, TWA, and Eastern Airlines all filed for bankruptcy during that time. The economic boom of the mid- and late 1990s, however, resulted in a relative dearth of high-profile bankruptcy cases. The recent economic downturn has moved corporate reorganizations back into the spotlight. The Chapter 11 filings by firms such as Enron, Global Crossing, the Loewen Group, …

The Law Of Last Resort, Barry E. Adler Nov 2002

The Law Of Last Resort, Barry E. Adler

Vanderbilt Law Review

A financially distressed individual or corporation employs the bankruptcy process only as a last resort. The study of bankruptcy law, however, need not, and should not, be an afterthought. The traditional bodies of law that compose private ordering are the laws of property, contract, and tort. Property law establishes private entitlements that can be specifically enforced against the world. Contract law permits individuals to exchange obligations and thus invest one another with entitlements. Tort law creates its own set of entitlements and imposes liability for unwanted interference with those or other entitlements. These bodies of law are often presented as …

Fourt (Or Five) Easy Lessons From Enron, Douglas G. Baird, Robert K. Rasmussen

Vanderbilt Law Review

Temptation. It lies at the heart of financial swindles. The promise of 50% returns in three months can lure thousands of investors-so too can a stock that soars 500% in three years. But those who are tempted are often skeptical. Before they invest, they want to know how one can enjoy such supracompetitive returns. The answer usually is a facially plausible story, though with a bit of mystery attached. The mystery is often touted as the reason that the investment opportunity is exclusive to the entrepreneur who discovered it. It is what ensures that the gains are not competed away. …

Chapter 11 Reorganization Cases And The Delaware Myth, Harvey R. Miller Nov 2002

Chapter 11 Reorganization Cases And The Delaware Myth, Harvey R. Miller

Vanderbilt Law Review

Since the mid-1990s, there has been a spirited debate concerning the emergence of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware (the "Delaware Bankruptcy Court") as the virtual Chapter 11 capital for distressed debtor corporations. The "Delawarization" of corporate reorganizations under title 11 of the United States Code (the "Bankruptcy Code"), which occurred during the 1990s as a result of the migration of Chapter 11 cases of large enterprises from other venues to Delaware, has provoked a stream of academic articles debating the consequences of Delaware's emergence. Armed with statistics purporting to demonstrate a high rate of recidivism …

Why Are Delaware And New York Bankruptcy Reorganizations Failing?, Lynn M. Lopucki, Joseph W. Doherty Nov 2002

Why Are Delaware And New York Bankruptcy Reorganizations Failing?, Lynn M. Lopucki, Joseph W. Doherty

Vanderbilt Law Review

Before 1990, the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware was a sleepy backwater. During the entire decade of the 1980s, Phoenix Steel-whose only plant was located in Delaware-was the only large, public company to file there. In 1990, two large, public companies-Continental Airlines and United Merchants and Manufacturers-filed in Delaware. They constituted 7% of the twenty-nine large, public companies filing in the United States that year. From 1990 to 1996, Delaware's market share steadily increased to 87% (thirteen of fifteen cases).' In just seven years, Delaware had become the bankruptcy reorganization capital of the United States.

Mapping The Mesoscale Interface Structure In Polycrystalline Materials, Brent L. Adams, C. L. Bauer, D. Casasent, A. Morawiec, S. Ozdemir, A. Talukder, Chialin T. Wu

Faculty Publications

This work was supported primarily by the MRSEC Program of the National Science Foundation under Award Numbers DMR-9632556 and DMR-0079996. A new experimental approach to the quantitative characterization of polycrystalline microstructure by scanning electron microscopy is described. Combining automated electron backscattering diffraction with conventional scanning contrast imaging and with calibrated serial sectioning, the new method (Mesoscale Interface Mapping System, MIMS) recovers precision estimates of the 3-dimensional idealized aggregate function G(x). This function embodies a description of lattice phase and orientation (limiting resolution ~ 1 degree) at each point x (limiting spatial resolution ~ 100 nanometers), and therefore contains a complete …

Modeling The Multicast Address Allocation Problem, Daniel Zappala, Chris Gauthierdickey, Virginia Lo Nov 2002

Modeling The Multicast Address Allocation Problem, Daniel Zappala, Chris Gauthierdickey, Virginia Lo

Faculty Publications

To support IP multicast, domains must assign a unique multicast address to each application from a limited, globally-shared address space. We examine the performance of several classes of address allocation algorithms withln the context of the MASC architecture. This study is the first of its kind to model the generalized multicast address allocation problem and consider non-contiguous allocation algorithms. We find that prefix-based allocation outperforms our non-contiguous algorithm, despite the apparent advantages of non-contiguous allocation. We also verify the benefits of using worst-fit for new allocations.

A Theoretical Framework For The Multicast Address Allocation Problem, Daniel Zappala, Chris Gauthierdickey, Virginia Lo, Timothy Singer

Faculty Publications

The multicast address allocation problem requires Internet domains to allocate unique addresses to multicast applications from a globally-shared space. We develop a theoretical framework for multicast allocation algorithms that is influenced by subcube allocation in hypercube computer systems. Based on this framework we derive complexity results for the address allocation problem and describe several new allocation algorithms that use a hypercube model for address representation.

Genetic Diversity Of The African Geocarpic Legume Kersting's Groundnut, Macrotyloma Geocarpum (Tribe Phaseoleae: Fabaceae), R. S. Pasquet, G. Mergeai, J. P. Baudoin

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

A survey of allozyme variation in Kersting's groundnut [Macrotyloma geocarpum (Harms) Maréchal and Baudet] was undertaken by examining 19 enzymes systems encoding 32 putative loci in 18 domesticated accessions and two wild accessions. No variation was found within and among domesticated accessions as well as within and between both wild accessions. However, very high genetic distance between wild and domesticated accessions suggests that they should be assigned to two different species. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Relative Safety Of Sprays Of Two Neem Insecticides To Diadegma Mollipla (Holmgren), A Parasitoid Of The Diamondback Moth: Effects On Adult Longevity And Foraging Behaviour, A. M. Akol, S. Sithanantham, P. G.N. Njagi, A. Varela, J. M. Mueke Nov 2002

G.N. Njagi, A. Varela, J. M. Mueke

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The non-target safety of two neem-based insecticides, Neemroc EC® (an oil formulation) and Neemros® (an oil-free powder formulation) to adults of Diadegma mollipla (Holmgren), a larval parasitoid of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), was investigated in laboratory bioassays. The neem insecticides were compared against Karate® (a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide) and water as sprays. Karate® caused 100% mortality in treated wasps within 6 h, while the two neem insecticides did not cause any significant mortality. The mean longevity of wasps was not significantly affected by exposure to the two neem insecticides. The time allocation to different components of foraging behaviour …
