After both summarizing recent empirical work and presenting new observations on each of the six phases of a civil lawsuit (forum, pretrial, settlement, trial, judgment, and appeal), the authors draw a series of lessons for understanding and using empirical methods in the study of the legal system's operation. In so doing, they generate implications for current and projected policy debates concerning litigation, while identifying areas that demand further empirical work.

Report On Internship At Jackson Barracks Military Museum, Stan Amerski
Arts Administration Master's Reports (1984-2016)
From July through November 2002, the internship which I have been engaged in at Jackson Barracks Military Museum has afforded me opportunity to gain practical experience in both the curatorial and preparatory aspects of museum operations. Jackson Barracks Military Museum is part of a larger state agency, "The Military Directorate" and its governing board is appointed in accordance with state law. Jackson Barracks Military Museum is presently being restructured to acquire certification from the U.S. Army Center of Military History Museum Division. Katz in "Museum Trusteeship: The Fiduciary Ethic Applied" The Journal of Arts Management and Law (73) writes that …
European Adaptation To Expeditionary Warfare: Implications For The U.S. Army, Andrew M. Dorman Dr.
European Adaptation To Expeditionary Warfare: Implications For The U.S. Army, Andrew M. Dorman Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The author briefly examines the European response to the changing security environment and the opportunities presented by the European Security and Defense Policy Expeditionary Force. As he correctly observes, the establishment of a European expeditionary force will be no easy matter, will require substantial investment, and will take years to complete. However, it is the right course for Europe to take. The European Union (EU) cannot manage emerging security issues using Cold War legacy forces because they are too ponderous to deploy. A lighter, more nimble expeditionary force is critical to EU policy. The author also points out that the …

What Will My Parents Think? Relations Among Adolescents’ Expected Parental Reactions, Prosocial Moral Reasoning, And Prosocial And Antisocial Behaviors, Jennifer M. Wyatt, Gustavo Carlo
What Will My Parents Think? Relations Among Adolescents’ Expected Parental Reactions, Prosocial Moral Reasoning, And Prosocial And Antisocial Behaviors, Jennifer M. Wyatt, Gustavo Carlo
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Prior researchers confirmed socialization models depicting parenting practices and social cognitions associated with prosocial and antisocial behaviors. However, little research has focused on processes underlying the link between parenting and these behaviors. Per Grusec and Goodnow’s internalization model, children and adolescents develop expectancies regarding their parents’ reactions to their behaviors. Adolescents’ expected parental reactions to prosocial behaviors were hypothesized to predict prosocial behaviors; expectations regarding antisocial behaviors were expected to predict antisocial behaviors. For this study, 80 adolescents and their parents reported adolescents’ antisocial and prosocial behaviors. Adolescents completed a measure of prosocial moral reasoning and an assessment of how …

Unique Epitope Of Bovine Immunodeficiency Virus Gag Protein Spans The Cleavage Site Between P16Ma And P2l, Ming Lu, Ling Zheng, Kathy Mitchell, Sanjay Kapil, Charles Wood, Harish Minocha
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV) and Jembrana disease virus (JDV) are closely related bovine lentiviruses that are difficult to distinguish by presently available diagnostic methods. Recently, in our laboratory, a monoclonal antibody (MAb; MAb 10H1) against the BIV Gag protein identified a differential epitope, located at the 6.4-kDa N terminus of a 29-kDa Gag capsid protein, which was absent in JDV. To define the essential amino acids of the epitope, a series of primers within the 163 bp of DNA corresponding to the 6.4-kDa protein were designed. The full-length 163-bp DNA fragment and the smaller DNA fragments with deletions were amplified …

Detection Of Phosphorus And Nitrogen Deficiencies In Corn Using Spectral Radiance Measurements, S.L. Osbourne, James S. Schepers, D. Francis, Michael R. Schlemmer
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Applications of remote sensing in crop production are becoming increasingly popular due in part to an increased concern with pollution of surface and ground waters due to over-fertilization of agricultural lands and the need to compensate for spatial variability in a field. Past research in this area has focused primarily on N stress in crops. Other stresses and the interactions have not been fully evaluated. A field experiment was conducted to determine wavelengths and/or combinations of wavelengths that are indicative of P and N deficiency and also the interaction between these in corn (Zea mays L.). The field experiment …

Mineralization Of Manure Nutrients, Bahman Eghball, Brian J. Wienhold, John E. Gilley, Roger A. Eigenberg
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
In order to apply manure or compost to fulfill the nutrient requirements of a crop, knowledge of the amount of nutrients mineralized following application is needed. Nutrient mineralization from applied manure depends on temperature, soil moisture, soil properties, manure characteristics, and microbial activity. Since these factors cannot be accurately predicted, nutrient mineralization from applied manure can only be approximated. Nitrogen (N) availability from applied manure includes the inorganic N (NO3-N and NH4-N) in manure plus the amount of organic N mineralized following application. Nitrogen mineralization differs for different manure types since the inorganic/organic fraction and quality …
Brief Communications: Rapid And Costly Ageing In Wild Male Flies, Russell Bonduriansky, Chad Brassil
Brief Communications: Rapid And Costly Ageing In Wild Male Flies, Russell Bonduriansky, Chad Brassil
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Ageing (senescence) has never been demonstrated convincingly in any insect in the wild, where mean life-spans are probably much shorter than in the laboratory1, and most evidence for senescence in other wild animals (such as mammals) is limited to their reduced survival with age2. Here we show that ageing is detectable in wild populations of a very short-lived insect, the antler fly (Protopiophila litigata), and causes debilitating and costly effects that force a decline not only in survival probability, but also in the reproductive rate of males. Our findings argue against the possibility of …
Effect Of An Electric Field On The Surface Tension Of A Dipolar-Quadrupolar Fluid And Its Implication For Sign Preference In Droplet Nucleation, V.B. Warshavsky, Xiao Cheng Zeng
Effect Of An Electric Field On The Surface Tension Of A Dipolar-Quadrupolar Fluid And Its Implication For Sign Preference In Droplet Nucleation, V.B. Warshavsky, Xiao Cheng Zeng
Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications
The effect of a uniform electric field on interfacial properties of dipolar-quadrupolar fluids is investigated by using the density-functional theory. As in the case of purely dipolar fluids the (thermodynamic) surface tension is always altered by the external field, regardless of the direction of the field. However, unlike the purely dipolar fluids, for two given external fields with the same strength but exactly opposite direction the magnitude of variation in the surface tension is different. This apparent symmetry breaking by reversing the field direction suggests a new molecular mechanism to explain the phenomenon of sign preference in droplet formation on …

We report results on experimental and theoretical studies of structural and magnetic properties of FePt: B2O3 nanocomposite films. It was found for films prepared by magnetron sputtering with subsequent annealing that lattice parameters a and c of fct FePt change with significantly different rates with increase of the B2O3 fraction. As a consequence, fundamental magnetic properties change markedly, with the Curie temperature decreasing by 36% for 25% FePt volume fraction compared with the bulk value. Using an ab initio parametrization of magnetic interactions, we propose statistical model of thermal fluctuations in fct FePt, which …

Current Surgical Treatment Of Parkinsons Disease, Sohail A. Ansari, Antoine Nachanakian, Nabil M. Biary
Saudi Medical Journal
There has been a renaissance in the surgical management of Parkinson9s disease. This has been due to long-term effects of levodopa and a better understanding of the basal ganglia and its circuitry. Ablative surgery and neurostimulation are the only realistic surgical options at present. Although surgical treatments, such as ablation and stimulation are effective, they are not useful for stopping the progression or restoring the system. Neural transplantation helps restore the system by using a number of techniques. Targets mostly used are in the thalamus, globus pallidus and subthalamic nucleus. A number of factors must be considered including patient9s age, …
