The Wpi/Goddard Space Flight Center Projects Program, Fred J. Looft, William W. Durgin
Office of the Provost Scholarship
The WP/IGSFC (Goddard Space Flight Center) Projects Program is an off-campus, multi-disciplinary opportunity for students to complete their capstone design project requirement during 10 weeks of on-site project work. Students accepted into this program are required to spend one term in a project preparation course where they carry out background research, interact with their project mentor(s) at the space center, and write a detailed project proposal. At the completion of the preparation course and several weeks before the start of the following academic year, the students relocate to the Washington area and work full time for ten weeks on their …

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)
Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have traveled the professional waterways of higher education on different streams. For some, those streams have been very tranquil, yet for many the waters have been rather choppy. These experiences have been no different from other people of color who serve at predominantly white institutions.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)
When an organization, any organization, but in particular, higher education, decides to engage in a diversity initiative, the leadership of the institution must be aware that they are engaging in a complex change or organization development. Organization Development is defined as change initiated by the top leadership of an organization, the change must be organization-wide, it is planned; it is designed to improve organizational health and effectiveness, and is implemented with the assistance of skills and interventions based in the behavioral sciences.
The Potential Role Of Minority Student Organizations In The Recruitment And Retention Process At Urban Universities, Keith Williams
The Potential Role Of Minority Student Organizations In The Recruitment And Retention Process At Urban Universities, Keith Williams
Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)
In 1992, the Department of Chemistry at Wayne State University developed an office to address the issue of minority student recruitment and retention in the sciences. The Initiative through the success of its programming revealed that minority student organizations were instrumental in student retention at both the college and pre-college levels. Moreover, an unintended consequence of this synergy is the recruitment of minority students to the university.

A Qualitative Study Of A Summer Bridge Program's Contribution To The Persistence Of Underrepresented Students Of Color At A Selective, Predominately White Institution , Patrick Velasquez Ph.D.
Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)
This proposed presentation will describe a qualitative study of the experiences of ten underrepresented students (African Americans, Chicanos, and Filipinos) of color who attend a public, selective, predominately white, research institution: the University of California, San Diego. More specifically, it will examine the effects of those students' participation in a summer bridge program on their "ease of transition" (Hurtado and Carter, 1997) and their academic and social integration during their freshmen year (Tinto, 1993). In addition, the study provides a context for assessing the students' experiences by also examining their perceptions of the campus climate (Hurtado et al., 1999) at …

Successful Recruitment And Retention Strategies Of Faculty Of Color In Predominately White Universities , Olivia A. Williams Ph.D, Chaunda Scott Abc
Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)
This presentation shares testimonies of successful strategies for recruitment and retention from ten faculty of color at a Midwestern mid-size predominately white university. The voices of Eastern Indian, Native American Indian, African American, Asian American, Mexican American, and Arab American faculty were solicited. Results are used to highlight the strategies these faculty members of color have used to integrate into a predominately white university.

To Be Or Not To Be Another: Multiracial Or Mixed Race , Cecile Ann Lawrence
Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)
This session will explore recent conversations about developing an expanded view of identity in the U.S. The focus would be on the status of "multiracial" or "mixed race." This would also include discussion on how these categories would affect affirmative action and diversity initiatives in the context of higher education.

Arizona State Unamerican Indian Education , Autumn Weaver
Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)
Federal rules prohibited American Indian children attending boarding schools from using their native languages until the 1930's. Success would be more attainable for Indian students if the university implemented programs that acknowledge American Indian experience and contributions. Non-Indian students would also benefit from learning about the Indian experiences in United States history. Culturally relevant programming and a visible Native presence would increase both the quality of education and the university's retention of American Indian students.

Materials Engineering
Research suggests that a large percentage of engineering students engage in some form of academic dishonesty. To investigate this very serious concern, the authors have undertaken a research project on the Perceptions and Attitudes toward Cheating among Engineering Students (PACES). The premise of this research is that a combination of pressures, rather than malicious motivations, account for most student cheating. This paper focuses on a portion of the PACES survey; student opinions on what actions might prevent cheating. The authors examined data collected from approximately 350 engineering and pre-engineering undergraduate students at 5 institutions. In the survey, the students were …
Illuminating Electronics Problem Solving With The Cal Poly Mohat Technique, David Braun, Fred W. Depiero, Michael Borland
Illuminating Electronics Problem Solving With The Cal Poly Mohat Technique, David Braun, Fred W. Depiero, Michael Borland
Electrical Engineering
This paper describes a Cal Poly version of circuit analysis to assist both students and instructors. The primary focus of the technique is helping students perform hand analysis, particularly the type of hand analysis that clarifies the student’s understanding of circuit operation in a manner that can benefit subsequent design decisions. The technique nicely complements graphical solution techniques such as load-line analyses and computer aided circuit simulation. MoHAT, an abbreviation of Model-Hypothesize-Analyze-Test, provides students with a roadmap to use, when analyzing even relatively complex circuits containing diodes and transistors. This paper emphasizes the pedagogy of MoHAT and describes a web-based …

While universities take a variety of approaches in dealing with academic dishonesty, current evidence suggests that institutions with honor codes have a significantly lower level of self-reported cheating as compared to nonhonor code institutions. This paper focuses on five institutions and their effectiveness in dealing with cheating, specifically among engineering or pre-engineering students. The authors' goal is to provide greater understanding of what institutional approaches appear to be most effective in minimizing cheating among this specific sub-group. The paper presents a predictive model of the extent of cheating among engineering students at these institutions using a variety of variables, including …
Measuring Packet Reordering, John M. Bellardo, Stefan Savage
Measuring Packet Reordering, John M. Bellardo, Stefan Savage
Computer Science and Software Engineering
The Internet architecture provides an unsequenced datagram delivery service. Nevertheless, many higher-layer protocols, such as TCP, assume that packets are usually delivered in sequence, and consequently suffer significant degradation when packets are reordered in flight. While there have been several recent proposals to create protocols that adapt to reordering, evaluating their effectiveness requires understanding the dynamics of the reordering processes prevalent in the Internet. Unfortunately, Internet packet sequencing is a poorly characterized and understudied behavior. This failing can be largely attributed to the lack of accurate and universally applicable methods for measuring packet reordering. In this paper, we describe a …

The Anchor, Volume 116.10: November 6, 2002, Hope College
The Anchor: 2002
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
