U.S. Childhood Vaccine Availability: Legal, Regulatory, And Economic Complexities, Robin J. Strongin
U.S. Childhood Vaccine Availability: Legal, Regulatory, And Economic Complexities, Robin J. Strongin
National Health Policy Forum
Despite the vital role they play in public health, childhood vaccines travel a complicated road from laboratory to provider and patient. From the fall of 2000 until well into 2002, a combination of factors, including market dynamics, legal challenges, and regulatory hurdles, led to a shortage of some childhood vaccines. This paper examines each of these factors, focusing on the important roles of both the public and the private sectors.

Observer Preferences And Cultural Differences In Color Reproduction Of Scenic Images, Scot Fernandez, Mark Fairchild
Observer Preferences And Cultural Differences In Color Reproduction Of Scenic Images, Scot Fernandez, Mark Fairchild
Presentations and other scholarship
Observer preferences in the color reproduction of pictorial images have been a topic of debate for many years. Through a series of psychophysical experiments we are trying to better understand the differences and trends in observer preferences for pictorial images, determine if cultural biases on preference exist, and finally generate a set of preferred color reproduced images for future experimentation and evaluation. The results yielded that statistical difference between the peaks of preference of image quality may exist between cultures, but that the cultural difference observed is most likely not of practical significance for most applications. The analysis of a …

Presentations and other scholarship
The CIE Technical Committee 8-01, color appearance models for color management applications, has recently proposed a single set of revisions to the CIECAM97s color appearance model. This new model, called CIECAM02, is based on CIECAM97s but includes many revisions1-4 and some simplifications. A partial list of revisions includes a linear chromatic adaptation transform, a new non-linear response compression function and modifications to the calculations for the perceptual attribute correlates. The format of this paper is an annotated description of the forward equations for the model.

Report Of Hanford Site Access, Hanford Action Of Oregon, Norm Buske
Report Of Hanford Site Access, Hanford Action Of Oregon, Norm Buske
Hanford Action of Oregon
Nine rooted vegetation samples were collected from Hanford on November 12, 2002, under a Hanford Site access agreement. Each of the 6 samples tested positive for at least one artificial radionuclide, probably of Hanford origin. These positive results show upward migration to the land surface vis deep-rooted plants that introduce the radioactivity into surface biota.
Hanford's strategy of cleaning up the topmost 15 feet of soil on the site is thus seen to rely on preclusion of deep-rooted, arid land vegetation. The "irrigated agriculture" and "rural residential" land use scenarios envision shallow-rooted plants that would not take buried waste up …

Plasma Pge-2 Levels And Altered Cytokine Profiles In Adherent Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (Nsclc), Giovanna E. Hidalgo, Li Zhong, Dennis E. Doherty, Edward A. Hirschowitz
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
INTRODUCTION: PGE-2 is constitutively produced by many non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC) and its immunosuppressive effects have been linked to altered immune responses in lung cancer. We asked whether elevated levels of plasma PGE-2 correlated with monocyte IL10 production in the NSCLC environment. Looking for correlation in NSCLC patient blood we assayed plasma from NSCLC patients for PGE2 and IL10; we further evaluated production of IL10 by adherent mononuclear cells from a subset of these patients looking for an altered cytokine profile.
RESULTS: Our initial in vitro experiments show that monocyte IL10 induction correlates with tumor cell PGE-2 production, confirming …

Large‐Scale Hydro‐Climatology Of The Terrestrial Arctic Drainage System, Mark C. Serreze, David H. Bromwich, Martyn P. Clark, Andrew J. Etringer, Tingjun Zhang, Richard B. Lammers
Faculty Publications
The large‐scale hydro‐climatology of the terrestrial Arctic drainage system is examined, focusing on the period 1960 onward. Special attention is paid to the Ob, Yenisey, Lena, and Mackenzie watersheds, which provide the bulk of freshwater discharge to the Arctic Ocean. Station data are used to compile monthly gridded time series of gauge‐corrected precipitation (P). Gridded time series of precipitation minus evapotranspiration (P−ET) are calculated from the moisture flux convergence using NCEP reanalysis data. Estimates of ET are obtained as a residual. Runoff (R) is obtained from available discharge records. For long‐term water‐year means, P−ET for the Yenisey, Lena, and Mackenzie …
