Capable and well-organized data mining algorithms are essential and fundamental to helpful, useful, and successful knowledge discovery in databases. We discuss several data mining algorithms including genetic algorithms (GAs). In addition, we propose a modified multivariate Newton's method (NM) approach to data mining of technical data. Several strategies are employed to stabilize Newton's method to pathological function behavior. NM is compared to GAs and to the simplex evolutionary operation algorithm (EVOP). We find that GAs, NM, and EVOP all perform efficiently for well-behaved global optimization functions with NM providing an exponential improvement in convergence rate. Studies have demonstrated increased utilization of medical services for patients with behavioral health diagnoses. Medicaid managed care organizations (MMCOs) that operate under behavioral health carve-outs face the challenge of effectively targeting disease management initiatives in the absence of information on behavioral diagnoses. This study sought to develop a predictive model of emergency department (ED) utilization for patients where a diagnosis of psychosis could be identified from a claim associated with a medical service provider visit. In the Fall of 2000, State Representative Larry McKeon, at the urging of local community groups and residents, commissioned Loyola University Chicago’s Center for Urban Research and Learning (CURL) to provide an analysis of relevant data regarding housing and land use in the Uptown community. A Local Advisory Council (LAC) was created to review, evaluate, and advise the project staff as they collected and analyzed data sets. Automatic Estimation Of The Seafloor Geomorphology Of The Santos Basin, Brazil, Brian R. Calder, Luciano E. Fonseca, Joao B. Francolin

The bathymetry and acoustic backscatter of Santos Basin, Brazil were mapped using a SeaBeam 2112 (12 kHz, 151 beam) Multibeam Echosounder (MBES) aboard the R/V Falcon Explorer. This MBES data was acquired from January-November, 2000, during a high-resolution multi-channel 3D seismic survey, resulting in 380 parallel lines of 90 km length, spaced 250 m apart. The final survey mapped an area of 5,000 km${}^2$ in water depths of 900--2000 m. These closely spaced multibeam tracks resulted in an average overlap between swaths of 1000%, thereby ensonifying most areas of the seafloor at least ten times. Traditional (hand) processing of a …

Backscatter vs. grazing angle, which can be extracted from multibeam backscatter data, depends on characteristics of the multibeam system and the angular responses of backscatter that are characteristic of different seafloor properties, such as sediment hardness and roughness. Changes in backscatter vs. grazing angle that are contributed by the multibeam system normally remain fixed over both space and time. Therefore, they can readily be determined and removed from backscatter data. The component of backscatter vs. grazing angle due to the properties of sediments varies from location to location, as the sediment changes. The sediment component of variability can be inferred …

This study draws a nexus between heuristic-systematic information processing and the theory of planned behavior through a model of risk information seeking and processing. The model proposes that the form of information processing individuals apply to risk information from the media and other sources affects beliefs, evaluations, and attitudes considered important to making judgments about performing risk-reducing behaviors. This study found that deeper, more systematic processing of risk information is positively related to evaluation strength, attitude strength, and the number of strongly held behavioral beliefs actively considered by respondents when thinking about environmental hazards. Border Catholic Schools: Unique Stakeholder Alliances (Part Ii), Karen M. Watt

The article presents the results of a qualitative study extracted from the dissertation The Impact of Catholic Schooling on Low-Income Mexican-American Students (Watt, 1999). This study explored four case studies of third-grade teachers, their schools, and their classrooms, in a Hispanic cultural context. Findings revealed that the Border Catholic Schools were communities of consensus with regard to the nature and mission of Catholic schooling. All stakeholders “held the same stake,” agreeing on the curriculum, instruction, and operation of the Border Catholic Schools. Are there differences in how Canadian and United States bishops understand the pre-and post-Vatican II Church, its salvific purpose, unity, authority, collegiality, equality, empowerment, the role of women, and the bishop’s role in transforming the Church and the world? Data originally collected from interviews with five Canadian and seven United States bishops as part of a study (Bunz, 1994) investigating the role of bishop were reassessed to examine this question. Differences and similarities in how Canadian and United States bishops perceived the challenges facing the Church were discerned. 生命倫理自一九七○年代起逐漸受到重視，台灣地區自一九九○年代起，也逐漸引起醫學教育學者及社會大眾的關注，而醫學倫理的教學方式與策略也逐漸轉向以問題為導向的跨科整合型的教學與案例研討，而本國探討有關醫學倫理學的論著篇幅也明顯地增加中；本文擬整體型地針對當代生命倫理學之歷史發展、生命倫理學之方法論（包括目的論、義務論、德行倫理、原則主義、女性主義生命倫理、決疑論、社群主義、儒家生命倫理）、原則主義的方法與原則（包括尊重自主、行善、不傷害、正義）及其批判、醫學倫理的十二個核心主題及生物基因科技相關主要倫理課題（包括基因改造作物、基因轉殖動物及異種移植、基因檢測、基因治療、幹細胞研究、人類無性生殖）做一概要、綜合性之介紹，並藉生命倫理議題之呈現嚐試指出生命倫理學不僅是一種集合多重專業之研究領域，並且與每一個醫療照護工作者及生命科學研究者都有密切的關係，有必要在醫學教育及生命科學教育與專業訓練的過程中被強調與實踐。

綜合醫院醫療爭議案件之心理社會面向分析, 士程 廖, 明濱 李, 美華 王, 玲玲 周, 源德 李, 博生 謝

醫療爭議日漸增加，風險管理更加重要，與醫療爭議相關之社會心理因素之掌控是關鍵之一。本研究旨在廣泛蒐集綜合醫院中，尚未逕付司法程序之醫療爭議案件，以個案研究之方式，分析其中之心理社會面向因素，為未來醫病溝通與醫療爭議之相關醫學倫理研究與教育，奠立實証之基礎。本研究共蒐集醫療爭議案例31件，按醫療爭議性質分類，醫療結果包括死亡及重大傷殘者20件（64.5%），輕度失能10件（32.3%），非醫療行為相關爭議案件1件（3.2%）。根據醫療爭議溝通過程之對談互動及書面資料分析，本研究結果發現知情同意過程不足之個案有15件（48.4%），顯著醫病認知差異者19件（61.3%）；醫療爭議發生時，呈現知情同意不足問題之個案，其年齡顯著較知情同意充分者為高，知情同意內容充足與否，與醫病溝通過程中呈現之認知差異，以及是否為死亡或重大失能顯著相關。整體而言，本研究發現引發醫療爭議之核心因素包括：災難性結果、醫療過程之不確定性及風險、急性期之危機處理、急性期後之治療策略溝通等。而醫病溝通之良窳以及知情同意原則之是否落實，往往與醫療爭議之發生及事後處理之難易程度相關。

The University of Hong Kong Medical School adopted a new curriculum in 1997, taking a problem-based learning and integrative approach that includes both basic sciences and clinical aspects. The impact of the new curriculum on the teaching and learning of physiology has been twofold. Firstly, only those lectures and practicals in physiology that were considered relevant to the PBL cases were retained. Secondly, clinical aspects, namely diagnosis and treatment of disease, are now included in the teaching and learning during the first two years. For Extension practitioners, research is typically considered an ominous practice reserved for ivory tower academics, and evaluation is nearly as mysterious. Therefore, Extension agents often shy away from using scientific methods to evaluate educational programs. However, research is simply a methodical way of finding answers to questions used to discover new information or prove scientific theories. And research methods can also be useful to effectively evaluate an educational program or its participants in the most objective way. This article presents an overview of research methods that Extension agents can use in program evaluation. It includes a bibliography of helpful resources.

Extension has a long history of support for communities, primarily through programs such as agriculture and 4-H. When an entire community faces a crisis, however, the needs of the community can expand beyond the goals of a specific program. In the summer of 2001, Klamath Falls, Oregon experienced a crisis when a federal decision eliminated irrigation water to over 1200 families farming more than 220,000 acres. The Klamath County Extension Office recognized the role they could play and organized and facilitated three countywide meetings to identify needs and strategies for action. Beyond Knowledge: Guidelines For Effective Health Promotion Messages, Joye C. Gordon

Knowledge does not always result in the adoption of recommended behaviors that can prevent or detect illness. This article synthesizes the research of psychologists, health advocates, and other social scientists to identify the factors other than knowledge that influence decisions regarding healthful behaviors. The article also presents guidelines to help Extension personnel optimize messages and programs designed to encourage preventive health behaviors based on findings concerning (a) perceptions of risks; (b) perceptions of self; (c) environmental conditions, both physical and social; and (d) perceptions of costs and benefits of recommended behavior.

Communicating The Handling Of Nonresponse Error In Journal Of Extension Research In Brief Articles, James R. Lindner, Gary J. Wingenbach

This article reports a study designed to describe historical treatment of nonresponse error in the Journal of Extension. All Research in Brief articles (N=83) published in JOE (1995-99) were analyzed using content analysis techniques. Results showed that not mentioning nonresponse error, not controlling nonresponse error, or not citing the literature were the norm and not the exception. It is recommended that Extension researchers address nonresponse error when it is a threat to the external validity of their study. Recommendations for additional study and adoption of methods for handling nonresponse are provided.

This article describes the effectiveness of electronic ear tags placed in 625 sheep and 508 4-H swine projects in five Indiana counties. Electronic ear tags worked well (>98% readability) in lambs when the tags were properly placed on the inside of the animal's ear. Electronic tags were either missing or failed to respond in 33% of the 4-H hogs at the Knox county fair, and swine members had a difficult time visually reading the number on the tags. Electronic ear tags speed up the check-in of animals at the county fair and reduce the potential for human error in …
