From May 28, 2002 to August 20, 2002, I served as an intern in the collections department at The National D-Day Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana. The National D-Day Museum (NDDM) is a 501(c) (3) history museum that specializes in the amphibious invasions of World War II. The institute is very new, opening in 2000, and has experienced an unpredictable amount of success and acclaim. Applying Learner-Centered Pedagogy To An Engineering Circuit-Theory Class At Smith College, Susan E. Voss, Glenn Ellis

This paper discusses examples of learner-centered activities that have been incorporated into a circuit-theory course at Smith College. The learner-centered activities are organized around the structures of community, knowledge, and assessment. Specific examples include the use and ongoing development of "Concept Tests," frequent assessment of the students and the course, a peer-editing process facilitated by using class time to edit lab reports, and discussions and readings related to the social context within which electrical engineering concepts reside. This course is part of a program-wide effort to integrate learner-centered pedagogy into the entire engineering science curriculum.

Improving The Conceptual Understanding Of Kinematics Through Graphical Analysis, Glenn W. Ellis, Warren A. Turner

In this study, we use graphical analysis to develop a learner-centered approach to understanding kinematics. The learner-centered approach offers three advantages: it is consistent with pedagogy that has been shown to be effective for learning, it can be naturally integrated with real-time data collection using motion detectors or video analysis, and it provides a mechanism for developing insight into both physics and calculus. Students discover fundamental principles through a series of laboratory modules. The learning process is integrated into a conceptual framework through a variety of activities and application projects.

The purpose of this study is 1) to examine the presence of the antigen in serum by employing a newly developed ELISA immunoassay that quantifies the total antigen and bound antigen (antigen-antibody complex) using polyclonal chicken antibodies directed against an IgM-binding epitope of the new antigen, and 2) to determine the location of the antigen in carcinoma and normal cells. Sera from healthy volunteers (n = 147) and cancer patients (n = 26) were compared for both bound and total antigen concentrations using the new ELISA. The author analyzes Colombia's problems and makes recommendations regarding what it will take to achieve stated U.S. and Colombian objectives in that crisis situation. She also examines the concomitant issue of "spillover" from the Colombian crisis into the rest of the Latin American region. A comprehensive, systematic treatment of the poorly studied Neotropical genus Trizogeniates (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Geniatini) is provided. This revision includes a key to species, species descriptions, and distributional and temporal data. Based on this study, the genus Trizogeniates now includes 30 species. The following eight species are new: Trizogeniates ohausi Villatoro, T. venezuelensis Villatoro, T. geminatus Villatoro, T. caiporae Villatoro, T. crispospinatus Villatoro, T. catsus Villatoro, T. aphilus Villatoro, and T. eris Villatoro. Monitoring By The Financial Press And Forced Ceo Turnover, Kathleen A. Farrell, David A. Whidbee

This paper examines Wall Street Journal news stories about 79 firms that forced CEO turnover and a matched sample of firms that did not force CEO turnover. In the two years prior to turnover, firms in the forced-turnover sample were the subjects of 76% more news stories about poor firm performance despite being from the same industry, of similar size, and similar performance as a sample of matched firms. Overall, the evidence suggests that scrutiny of poor firm performance by the financial press increases the likelihood of forced CEO turnover.

Resistance to methyl-parathion among Nebraska western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, populations is associated with increased hydrolytic metabolism of an organophosphate insecticide substrate. An electrophoretic method to identify resistant individuals based on the staining intensity of esterase isozymes on nondenaturing polyacrylamide gels was developed. Three groups of esterases (I, II, and III) were visible on the gels, but only group II esterase isozymes were intensified in resistant populations. A total of 26 and 31 field populations of western corn rootworms from Nebraska (in 1998 and 1999, respectively) were assessed with nondenaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) assays and diagnostic concentration …

Clinal variation in quantitative traits is often attributed to the effects of spatially varying selection. However, identical patterns can be produced by the interplay between purely stochastic processes (i.e. drift in combination with spatially restricted gene flow). One means of distinguishing between adaptive and nonadaptive causes of geographical variation is to compare relative levels of between population divergence in quantitative traits and neutral DNA markers. Such comparisons can be used to test whether levels of trait divergence attributable to additive genetic effects (as measured by QST) exceed null expectations based on the level of divergence at neutral marker …

Using spin-polarized inverse photoemission and X-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques, we show that the electronic structure of La0.65Pb0.35MnO3 thin films depends on the composition at the surface. With a gentle annealing procedure, the surface provides a maximum of 80% spin asymmetry at 0.5 eV above the Fermi level in spite of extensive Pb segregation. A heavily annealed (restructured) surface exhibits a reduced surface "ordering" temperature of 240 K (compared to the approximately 335 K bulk value) as well as a reduced spin asymmetry value of 40% at 0.5 eV above Fermi energy.

Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is one of the commonly inherited hemoglobinopathies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is characterized by periods of remissions and exacerbations called crises as well as certain pathological phenomenon such as acute chest syndrome, priapism, hepatopathy, and cerebrovascular stroke. Blood transfusion (BT) as therapy and prophylaxis in SCA, although was advocated as early as the 19409s, there are still debates regarding its benefits and risks. This is a review of the value of BT in patients with SCA with emphasis on the risks and benefits as well as guidelines towards safe BT.

OBJECTIVE: To report the results of repeat intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) after complete failure of fertilization with initial ICSI. METHODS: The medical records of the couples undergoing repeat ICSI at the Human Reproductive Biology Unit, Soliman Fakeeh Hospital, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, after complete failure of fertilization by initial ICSI between December 1994 and December 2000 were retrospectively examined. RESULTS: Seven hundred and eighty two oocytes from 146 women failed to fertilize by initial ICSI. The main indications for the procedure were severe oligoasthenoteratozoospermia or azoospermia.
