New Bahamian Records For Laemophloeidae (Coleoptera: Cucujoidea), Michael C. Thomas

A recent collecting trip to Andros Island in the Bahamas yielded a number of new Bahamian records for the Laemophloeidae. Unless otherwise stated specimens representing the new records were collected in ultraviolet light traps in a hardwood coppice at Forfar Field Station during the period 2-7-VI-2001 by the author, B. K. Dozier, and R. H. Turnbow, and are deposited in the Florida State Collection of Arthropods. Forfar Field Station is located on the east coast of the north island, near the small town of Stafford Creek.

A New Species Of The Beetle Genus Brachypsectra From The Dominican Republic, With Fossil Connections (Coleoptera: Brachypsectridae), Robert E. Woodruff

With the description of Brachypsectra vivafosile n. sp., from the Cabo Rojo desert area of Hispaniola, the beetle family Brachypsectridae now contains 4 described species. The family was originally known from the Dominican Republic by Miocene amber fossils of larvae. Genitalia are illustrated for the first time for the family. Relationships of the family within the Elateroidea are briefly discussed.

Review Of Noterapion Kissinger From Chile And Argentina (Coleoptera: Apionidae), David G. Kissinger

Descriptions and a key are provided for 7 South American species of Noterapion Kissinger (2002) (type species Apion meorrhynchum, Philippi and Philippi) including N. bruchi (Beguin-Billecocq), N. meorrhynchum (Philippi and Philippi), N. philippianum (Alonso-Zarazaga) and four new species described from Chile: N. chilense Kissinger, N. kuscheli Kissinger, N. nothofagi Kissinger, and N. saperion Kissinger. A lectotype designation is published for Apion meorrhynchum Philippi and Philippi and Apion vestitum Philippi and Philippi. Apion fuegianum Enderlein and A. pingue Beguin-Billecocq are synonymized with N. meorrhynchum (Philippi and Philippi), new synonymy.

Earlier this year, at the age of 85, Major Jacob Brodzinsky passed away at his home in Santo Domingo. It is with great sadness that I write this obituary, because "Jake" was a great personal friend and professional colleague for over 30 years. He leaves a wife, Marianela (Mañeña) Lopez-Penha, whom he married on April 26,1964, and two lovely daughters, Sibylla and Raquel.

The beetle family Cerambycidae is a favorite of many collectors and has been the focus of studies in the southeastern United States. Recent collecting has revealed significant new biological and distribution information for 33 cerambycid species. Included are five new state records and one new country record. Host plants are reported for the first time for 31 species. Unless otherwise stated all collections were made by the author. Rearing was done by collecting infested plant material and placing it in individual clear plastic tubs, which were checked regularly for emerging specimens. Longhorned beetles of the Tribe Lamiini have evolved into approximately 180 genera in South East Asia and nearby regions. Many genera and species are poorly-known and some taxa are still undescribed. As a prelude to a checklist and further studies of this group, the authors propose some taxonomic changes and provide corrections to previous literature.

A New Species Of Ceroplastes From Florida (Hemiptera: Coccoidea: Coccidae), Greg Hodges

Previous literature recognized twenty species of wax scales occurring in the Neartic region with nine of those occurring in Florida. This number has grown recently with the establishment of the Ceroplastes rusci and the discovery of C. feltyii (new species). A description and illustration of C. feltyii is provided along with a key to all of the wax scales currently found in Florida.

Three Bostrichid Beetles New To Florida (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae), Robert L. Beiriger

Three species of bostrichid beetles, previously unknown from Florida, were found in the Florida State Collection of Arthropods (FSCA) and in the Archbold Biological Station Collection. The genus Stephanopachys Waterhouse, in Florida, is now represented by four species. These new records probably represent infrequently collected species and not new introductions to Florida. A key to all species of Stephanopachys adults from Florida is presented.

Being among the most habitat diverse countries in the world (and plant diversity is about 22,000 sp.), Mexico has a Lepidoptera fauna recorded at about 14,385 species but is estimated to be over 22,000 species, if not much higher (some estimates go to 35,000 sp.). High Lepidoptera numbers in Mexico are also due to the large influx of tropical species from the border with Guatemala, as well as Mexican endemics. In this report, the Lepidoptera families are summarized for Mexico, giving known species and what experts estimate to be the true total for each family when all have been described. …

Luchoelmis, A New Genus Of Elmidae (Coleoptera) From Chile And Argentina, P. J. Spangler, C. L. Staines

Luchoelmis New Genus is described with four new species: aequalis, magallanensis, and penai from Chile and cekalovici from Argentina and Chile. Luchoelmis penai is designated as the type species of the genus. A key to the four species is presented.

The parajulid milliped genus Pseudojulus Bollman comprises four species: P. obtectus (Bollman), P. paynei (Hoffman), n. comb., and P. carolinensis and P. coastalis, new species; Arvechambus Causey comprises two species, A. hummi and A. weeinsi, both by Causey. Georgiulus Hoffman is placed in synonymy under Pseudojulus; G. hubrichti Hoffman is placed under P.paynei; and A. australis Causey is placed under A. hummi . The genera are sympatric in north Florida and southern Georgia, but Pseudojulus extends northward to coastal South Carolina and south central North Carolina, and westward to Alabama west of Mobile Bay. New County Records Of Chewing Lice (Mallophaga) On Birds In Florida, J. Adam Holt

County records for avian lice are less significant than the host records themselves. Considering that most avian lice are host specific, the county records should resemble the area the host would most likely be encountered. Nonetheless, the list cited in Forrester and Spalding (2003) contains few and spotty county records. The main source of material for this publication has been the Marathon Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Marathon, Monroe Co., Florida. Unlike commonsense notions and the findings from animal research, the literature concerning the effects of density on human social behavior is paralyzed by contradictory findings. This article examines empirically two fundamental issues which could account for this and which are central to the density-crowding debate: (1) whether observed crowding effects are the result of causation or selection and (2)whether individuals are negatively affected by both low and high levels of density. Data from the Toronto Mental Health and Stress study are analyzed using structural equation modeling to investigate these questions. The results support the notion that the effects of density …

Context: Cryokinetics is a common rehabilitative technique. To date, no data describing capsular temperature cycling during cryokinetics have been reported. Objective: To compare ankle capsular temperature before and at the end of each exercise bout during a typical cryokinetics session. Design: A 2 x 10 repeated measure factorial design was used. The independent variables were treatment and bout. The dependent variable for this study capsular temperature of the lateral talo-crural joint. In an effort to better understand the coastal processes responsible for the burial and exposure of small objects on the seafloor, the Office of Naval Research is sponsoring the Mine Burial Program. Among the field areas chosen for this program is the site of the Martha's Vineyard Coastal Observatory (MVCO), a permanent instrumented node in 12 m of water about 500 m off the southern shore of Martha?s Vineyard. This study of the Quonset Auditorium, one roadhouse among many on the regular tour route of R&B, gospel and country musicians in the post-World War II era (1947- 1959), illustrates the important role of roadhouses during a time of growth and change in popular music. It situates memories and experiences from the Quonset Auditorium in relation to regional and national movements of the day such as highway development, commercial and popular music, and the civil rights movement. This thesis analyzes the encoding of discourse referents in oral narratives in Adzera, an SVO Austronesian language of Papua New Guinea. First, it classifies overt referents on a given-new continuum according to Prince's (1981) taxonomy of assumed familiarity, looking at the forms and positions used to introduce new entities into a discourse. Then it applies Givón's (1983, 1995) quantitative approach to measure the continuity of referents, whether overtly manifested or semantically implied as verb arguments. This study largely confirms the findings and predictions of Prince and Givón regarding the introduction of new information and the relative continuity of various forms …

This dissertation is a study of the process of palatalization in Isthmus Mixe, in which every consonant in the inventory has a palatalized counterpart. This type of palatalization occurring as a secondary [i]-like articulation, simultaneous to the primary articulation of the consonant (Bhat 1974, Ladefoged 1993), is defined as secondary palatalization by Keating (1993). Occurring word initially in Isthmus Mixe, the feature of secondary palatalization alone represents the grammatical third person morpheme, palatalizing the initial consonant of the noun or verb. There are also verbal suffixes that consist solely of secondary palatalization, indicating clause-type markers (Dieterman 1995, 1998), and a …
