Future population growth and the corresponding increase in development in the coastal zone of NH are widely recognized as major threats to the integrity of coastal systems and their watersheds. The potential impacts associated with the expansion of developed land, and specifically with increasing amounts of impervious surfaces – rooftops, sidewalks, roads, and parking lots - may include significant changes in water quantity, degradation in water quality, and habitat loss. Because asphalt, concrete, stone, and other impenetrable materials effectively seal the ground surface, water is repelled and is prevented from infiltrating soils. In 1996, legislation created the Regional Safe Schools Program in Illinois. Alternative public school programs were established for disruptive or violent students who were unable or unwilling to conform themselves to the expectations of a traditional school setting. There has been limited research on alternative education administration. The purpose of this research was to study RSSP administrators to determine their leadership type, the effect of organizational culture on their leadership approach, and their beliefs and dispositions of alternative education. Access to capital is an on-going challenge for small firms. Capital is required to address a broad range of needs: to cover start-up costs, to provide working capital, to secure facilities or equipment, and to hire employees. Most small firms are at a relative disadvantage, because they are too small to access the public debt and equity markets. Similarly, they are typically too small to show up on the radar screens of venture capitalists on patrol for the next potential hot IPO. The advent of the Internet has opened many opportunities for bankers to access new customers, increase convenience and expand product ranges in many markets, including that of small businesses. Yet anecdotal evidence reveals that smaller banks are reluctant to employ Internet technology in the small business market for fear of damaging the customer relationship developed through personal contact. These smaller, more simply structured banks tend to specialize in small business lending, possessing a comparative advantage in that market (Craig and Hardee, 2001). Asset pricing models with atomistic agents typically relax assumptions concerning rationality and/or homogenous information in order to track endogenous bubbles. In this model, identically informed rational agents hold a Perceived Law of Motion (PLM) for a single new technology asset at IPO, yet they differ with respect to risk aversion. By mapping risk preferences to strategies, we use marginal supply and demand functions to solve for the PLM if REE holds. By relaxing the assumption of complete knowledge of agent's tastes and wealth, post-IPO bubbles emerge where the Actual Law of Motion is an amplification (bubble) of the price processes …

Optimal Liquidation Of Venture Capital Stakes, Robert Dubil

We model the optimal liquidation behavior of a venture capital or non-diversified asset management firm faced with a sale of concentrated security holdings. As the firm?s stake is large, its sales can lead to permanent and temporary price depressions. At the optimum, the institution chooses the liquidation interval to balance the exposure to the market return variance against the impact of its own sales on the realized return. We obtain closed-form solutions for power impact functions uncorrelated with returns. We also consider market impact correlated with the return process, i.e. a case where liquidity evaporates during severe price dislocations.

Borrowing Patterns For Small Firms: A Comparison By Race And Ethnicity, Susan Coleman
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
This article explores the use of debt capital by small firms using data from the 1998 Survey of Small Business Finances. An examination of the data reveals differences in the characteristics and borrowing experience of small firms by race and ethnicity. Results indicate that although minority firm owners were just as likely to apply for loans, they were significantly less likely to be approved for them. Further, black small business owners were less likely to even bother applying for a loan, because they assumed they would be denied. Until now, Pthirus pubis infestation in ancient human populations had only been recorded in the Old World. We found crab lice on South American mummified bodies from the Atacama Desert region. Crab louse eggs were found attached to the pubic hairs of a 2,000-yr-old Chilean mummy. Well-preserved adults were found in sediment and clothing from a Peruvian mummy dated 1,000 yr ago. Paleoparasitological evidence expands the knowledge of the distribution of this ectoparasite in ancient populations. As with many other parasites, pubic lice recorded in Andean populations show the antiquity of this parasite in the New World. It is likely …

Agroecosystems in the U.S. are beset with social, ecological and environmental problems as large industrial farming methods are edging out small family-sized farms and replacing ecological services provided by biodiversity with synthetic inputs and practices. While many of the benefits of smaller diversified or integrated farming systems are well known, farm producers need a concrete model that shows how integration is possible and with what crops. Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Research with letters written to authors for a contest showed that students often responded to literature in different ways according to the subgenre. Contemporary realistic fiction elicited many personalized responses while historical fiction elicited more responses that informed students' lives. Students noted that high fantasy and science fiction affected their writing skills, while mystery and other science fiction supported reading growth. The research indicates that writing letters to authors is a viable response activity for students.

When Do They Choose The Reading Center? Promoting Literacy In A Kindergarten Classroom, Susan K. Green, Clair Britt, Patsy Parker
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This action research project investigated activities designed to encourage children to visit the reading center in a kindergarten classroom. Three interventions were implemented on alternating days. Analyses suggested that these interventions led to increased voluntary use of the reading center. The days the intern read a story produced the most visits. This process of systematic data collection also increased monitoring of the children with the lowest literacy skills and provided opportunities to tailor literacy activities to their interests.

Effective tutoring is key to successful literacy learning for at-risk children. This report provides an overview of answers to the question: "What are the contexts for effective literacy tutoring?" The research shows that successful reading tutoring is commonly found in four contexts: home, school, professional/community, and university settings.

I Hoped To Feel At Home: The Story Of Elsie Strawn Armstrong, Michelle Killion Morahn

Elsie Strawn was born in 1789 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. She married Joseph Armstrong in 1811 and moved to Licking County, Ohio, where she bore nine sons. In 1831, leaving Joseph behind in Ohio, she relocated to the Illinois frontier with seven of her sons. She remained there until her death in 1871. Throughout her life, Elsie wrote poetry, much of which was about her life on the two frontiers of Ohio and 11linois. Her grandson Marshall Armstrong collected these poems to preserve them for her family, and the manuscript is housed in the Illinois State Historical Library. Family members …

Although gait analysis has been conducted for a long time, there has been little attention paid to ethnic differences in kinematics and kinetics of walking gait. The purposes of this study were: to compare the lower extremity sagittal kinematics and ground reaction forces during walking gait cycle; and to compare the anthropometric dimensions oflower limbs during static standing between Japanese and American Caucasian males. 111 Thirty males from Indiana State University (fifteen from each ethnic group), aged twenty to twenty-nine years, served as subjects for this study.
