For some time now I have been interested in autobiographical performance -- some form of the theatrical, in which performers explicitly use personal material in their work. Within this general field of autobiography and performance, one area of research concerns performances that are dependent on being located in personalised space -- what could be called, then, site-specific autobiographical performance. In the following essay I discuss the Austrian artist Rudolf Schwarzkogler. I have enjoyed the process of ferreting out articles and references to him, although these are seemingly as scarce as his own artistic output. Schwarzkogler spent just 2 years staging performance-actions in his apartment in the 1960s. These methodically photographed scenes involved sliced fish, bandages, light bulbs, razor blades, foodstuffs and surgical apparatus, all manipulated by anonymous figures. The photographs, works of art in their own right, have since toured internationally. Schwarzkogler was the least outgoing of a group called the Viennese Actionists, whose orgiastic, bloody Happenings …

While attending Bowling Green State University in 1997 I had an experience that changed my worldview. I was a teaching assistant in the Popular Culture department and part of my responsibilities included teaching Introduction to Popular Culture (POPC 100) and Introduction to Mass Media (POPC 165). I had been struggling to engage my students in examining the way in which social reality is represented to them through popular entertainments [2]. In 2001, the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) conducted a national survey of community colleges to identify their community programs and services. Survey responses demonstrated a strong level of community college commitment to improving the quality of life in their communities and offering a place to pursue lifelong learning. Responding colleges indicated that they are engaged in a wide variety of programs and services designed to reflect the diverse needs of the communities they serve, with many partnering with local and state government, nonprofit organizations, and local schools.

Learning involves cognitive, psychological, sociological, historical, philosophical, aesthetic, emotional and spiritual aspects. This study argues that the spiritual dimension of the psyche is overlooked in the research into education. Spirituality in education is not easily addressed in secular settings and needs exploration and explication. The thesis probes the interstice between the act of dramatic performance and the spiritual awareness of the individual. Case studies allow the exploration of the experience of performance for senior high school drama students, drama teacher trainees and an adult actor. The number of children who are performing poorly in school-wide tests seems to be increasing in an independent religious school in the metropolitan area. Several children have been identified "at risk" or having special needs but they seem to show little if any improvement as they get promoted to higher grades. The study investigated the instructional and assessment strategies that upper primary school teachers were using in their classrooms to improve the academic and social skills of children defined as having special needs. Teachers' perceptions were examined to determine whether there had been any observable increases in the academic performance …

Outrage is a common reaction to perceived wrongdoing. Those who feel outrage are often motivated to injure or punish wrongdoers, whether through violence, law, or otherwise. Martin Heidegger's meditating thinking can be hard to access-though by now a possible inroad into that thinking will have begun to emerge and, with it, some intimation of a possible, radically "other" way of thinking comparative law. On the other hand, there is also little doubt that parts of Heidegger's thinking are best left to obscurity. Nevertheless, Heidegger's work has been one generous if underplayed source of inspiration for many late twentieth century thinkers such as, for example, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, Niklas Luhmann and the younger Jirgen Habermas. Guillermo Gómez-Peña is one of the few Mexican performance artists who, since he came to the United States in 1978, has been able to create and explore the merging of visual language and text in the complexities of cross-cultural identities through controversial issues. Labeled by some as one of the most significant performance artists of the late twentieth century, he uses multiple media: video, performance, installation art, and bilingual poetry. It is the first book devoted to Gomez-Arcos, a member of a "lost" generation of Spanish dramatists who were silenced during the Franco era. This study is part of the on-going program evaluation of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Model Schools Initiative and Model Districts Initiative in the state of Washington. In developing the Teaching Attributes Observation Protocol (TAOP) a conceptual framework was identified based on extensive literature on constructivist teaching. From this framework and the foundation’s written materials we identified important components and indicators of constructivist teaching and implications for the classroom. We then produced an observation protocol with 7 lesson components and a number of indicators under each component. The content validity of the instrument was then checked against the literature …

Michelene Wandor is best known for her critical writings on gender in the British theatre, but Wandor is also the author of short stories, plays, and two collections of poetry, and her creative works reiterate and reinforce many of the issues and themes present in her theatrical criticism. It is unfortunate that Wandor's poetry is generally overlooked, for the poems, particularly Gardens of Eden, mirror her growth as a writer and as a feminist, explore the role of feminism in her creative process, and reveal the connections between her art and her political beliefs. Theatre education in the high school has an interesting past. Theatre has a long presence in schools as entertainment, but its benefits to educational outcomes has been largely overlooked. In the United States around the turn of the last century, this schema began to be questioned. In 1936, Columbia University published a book discussing the use of theatre in the United States and its possible uses in education: "The Production of Later 19th Century American Drama" by Garrett Leverton. This study analyzed how accurately authors of historical fiction portray William Shakespeare, the man and events of his life. An attempt was made to locate 25 books that contained Shakespeare as a character or dealt with events from his life. Twenty-two books were chosen that were written for children, young adults and adults with recommendations for young adults. Each book was read, summarized, reread and examined by completing a content analysis checklist designed to evaluate the portrayal of William Shakespeare and events of his life.
