Agustín Gómez-Arcos, a bilingual dramatist and novelist, was born in 1933 in the village of Enix (Almeria). The origins of his theater can be traced to his childhood experiences, in which he witnessed firsthand the horrors of the Spanish Civil War and the dark clouds of oppression of the Francoist regime, images that left indelible imprints on his literature and his life. Although in the future he would leave behind both native country and language, his memories of the Civil War and postwar period would continue to surface in his plays.

Current research suggests a relationship between cultural identity negotiation and the phenomenon of border crossing. While a wealth of literature exists on the topic of migration, few studies reflect a scope that includes in-depth analysis of the experiences of Afro-Caribbean women in the United States.Through ethnographic and autoethnographic methodologies, and using a feminist theoretical lens, this study explores issues relating to cultural identity negotiation in the lives of 10 Black women from Jamaica, The Bahamas, and Trinidad, who now reside in the Midwest region of the United States. In 1871, Willard Young, eleventh son of Brigham Young, was the first Mormon to receive an appointment to West Point Academy. His attendance at the military academy drew national attention and criticism from opponents of polygamy. Despite the opposition, he soon gained the respect of his classmates and graduated fourth in his class. He returned to teach engineering in 1879, served in the Spanish-American War, earning a commendation from President McKinley, and during World War I was supervisor of army engineering work on the Missouri River. The use of wireless in buildings based on microwave radio technology has recently become a viable alternative to the traditional wired transmission media. Because of the portable nature of radio transceivers, the need for extensive cabling of buildings with either twisted pair, coaxial, or optical fibre cable is eliminated. This is particularly desirable where high user mobility occurs and existing wiring is not in place, or buildings are heritage in nature and extensive cabling is seen as intrusive. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the development of the problem-solving skills of eleven year olds in a Western Australian Primary school when the teacher and the children were in-role within the drama. The teacher, as teacher in-role, and the students role-played a variety of situations in which effective problem-solving skills were used. As the study progressed the nature of the children's use of symbol and metaphor became an important issue. Modern stage drama was introduced into Thai theatre during the mid-1960s within the university circle and later spread to the commercial level. To make their productions more attractive and accessible to popular audiences, some theatre practitioners sought to experiment with adopting indigenous sources, either traditional stories or theatrical elements, which have been found in modern Thai theatre from time to time since the early 1970s. Gouldner's Tragic Vision, James Chriss

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

Classical literature, specifically ancient Greek philosophy and especially the study of Greek tragedy, is helpful in tracing out and understanding the transitions Alvin Gouldner made during his career as a sociologist. This article argues that a latent tragic orientation or vision existed during Gouldner's early career as a standout in the field of industrial sociology and that this tragic vision became manifest around 1962 as Gouldner was developing more and more strident denunciations of establishment sociology. This case study of Gouldner's career teaches a valuable lesson about the importance of the tragic vision in helping sociologists to understand the limitations …

Establishing Understandings: Teaching About Culture In Introductory Television Courses, Barbara R. Burke, Julie Rae Patterson-Pratt

Communication, Media, and Rhetoric Publications

In teaching introductory courses using television equipment, we find that cultural studies interests can be meshed with basic skills-oriented production classes in useful ways. Utilizing an on-going discussion strategy emphasizing that students are evaluating, criticizing, and interpreting, as well as producing cultural products, the activities we describe articulate the reflexive nature of media and culture. Furthermore, in asking students to investigate and explore ways media both construct and reflect their understanding of culture, students are guided to begin a life-long process of critical thinking.

This article discusses the different eras of development of the American town. The first era was a result of the agrarian grid. The second era started in 1938 when the Federal Housing Administration began working on a national code. The article identifies these sprawling second era towns as deficient. A third era is now underway and is heavily influenced by the first era towns.

Generalized Inclusive Forms — New Canonical Reed-Muller Forms Including Minimum Esops, Marek Perkowski, Alan Mishchenko, Malgorzata Chzanowka-Jeske

Reed-Muller (AND/EXOR) expansions play an important role in logic synthesis and circuit design by producing economical and highly-testable implementations of Boolean functions [3–6]. The range of Reed-Muller expansions include canonical forms, i.e. expansions that create unique representations of a Boolean function. Several large families of canonical forms: fixed polarity Reed-Muller forms (FPRMs), generalized Reed-Muller forms (GRMs), Kronecker forms (KROs), and pseudo- Kronecker forms (PKROs), referred to as the Green/Sasao hierarchy, have been described [7–9]. (See Fig. 1 for a settheoretic relationship between these families.)

Due Process, Rule 23, And Hybrid Classes: A Practical Solution, Robert M. Brava-Partain

UC Law Journal

Courts and litigants alike face unique challenges when confronted with a class seeking both legal and equitable relief, a so-called hybrid class. Typically, these types of classes raise Due Process, Seventh Amendment and rule-based concerns that are not easily managed. The Supreme Court has declined to decide the issue directly and Circuit Court cases have been less than consistent. The author pieces together the various ways that courts have dealt with hybrid classes and proposes an approach that will meet the needs of both litigants and judges.
