Katharina's Volte-Face : Self-Discovery In Shakespeare's The Taming Of The Shrew, Vinodini Murugesan Jan 2002

Katharina's Volte-Face : Self-Discovery In Shakespeare's The Taming Of The Shrew, Vinodini Murugesan

Student Works (2000-2009)

At first glance, Shakespeare's controversial battle-of-the-sexes play The Taming of the Shrew appears to be the story of a vile-tempered woman who is taken on as a challenge by a man who then 'tames' her into becoming a docile wife by subjecting her to a number of harsh experiences. In actual fact, however, the play is more than a simple far-fetched farce or comedy despite the undeniable fact that it is both funny as well as farcical. Although exceedingly entertaining in terms of both slapstick humour and witty repartee, the play has depths of meaning not at once apparent to …

Fatigue, Ambulance Perspectives In A Comparative Study Between Air And Road Transports, Wayne J. Mckenna

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The study of fatigue in the health and transport sectors has predominantly been focused on night shift or day shift operations. This study has been applied to the hours of operation of Ambulance Officers who perform both night and day shifts, while also being required for on-call. The Officer on-call is on stand-by between shifts, to be available to respond for duties from the completion of one shift until the commencement of the next, usually a ten-hour shift. Studies of a similar focus have not been identified so a comparison of these specific findings has not been possible. However trends …

Drama teaching in secondary schools in Western Australia has become an increasingly complex discipline in recent years. This study has considered the work of Drama teachers from the point of view of those practising the discipline, using a phenomenological methodology which allowed the voices of the participants to be heard directly. The Effects Of Socialization Through The Arts: Teaching Life Skills Strategies To Youth In West Las Vegas, Marcia Raquel Robinson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

There are at least 200 gangs in Southern Nevada with more than 7,700 identified members. "Gang bangers" do not anticipate a future or invest in "dreams," most do not expect to live beyond their 20's. Las Vegas is more the rule than the exception; the West Las Vegas community is the epicenter needing attention. The planning and development of this pilot program "The Performing and Visual Arts Camp for Kids" focused on teaching life skills and character development, such as getting along with others, respect for oneself and others, initiative, the ability to communicate, problem solving, perseverance, and goal setting …

Lights, Audience, Profit: The Evolution Of The Las Vegas Spectacle, Jaime Lee Rana Koran

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Las Vegas is known as a post-modern city; its development in the later half of the twenty-first century is an explosion of tourism, spectacle and gambling. Especially with the transitions of the past two years and the great variety in the new shows, no one has asked the question how did Las Vegas get from the showgirl to Blue Man Group? If we are to visualize a Las Vegas in the future, it is essential that we understand the whys of and the forces that impel change in the Las Vegas entertainment industry; As there are no chronologies of the …

Gambling With Virtue: The Moral Ramifications Of Female Gaming In The Early Novels Of Frances Burney, Heather Lynn Lusty Jan 2002

Gambling With Virtue: The Moral Ramifications Of Female Gaming In The Early Novels Of Frances Burney, Heather Lynn Lusty

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Gambling has always been an influential factor in literature; the importance of gaming to social entertainment in the eighteenth-century is inextricable from both historical and literary studies of the period. In the novel, gaming functions as a tangible social vice; the financial perils and moral recriminations suffered by literary characters is an essential part of their personal development; Frances Burney uses gaming as a fundamental element in her early novels; the trials her heroines experience during their forays into society all include the presence of gaming in some form. The proximity of gaming, as well as the social and moral …

Still, Lynn Margaret Drebes Jan 2002

Still, Lynn Margaret Drebes

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A collection of poems, Still, asks and attempts to answer the questions: how does memory function; how do we grieve; and what is time? The poems contend that the one consistent quality of memory is that it is never static; instead, "it comes in waves like nausea," and that this ebb and flow of memory influences necessarily the process of grieving, a recursive, rather than linear process. Time is a human construct having little bearing on the most significant, either enlightening or devastating, of human experiences. The intention of Still is not to definitively answer these questions; rather, it acknowledges …

The Irony Of Lawyers' Justice In America, Thomas L. Shaffer Jan 2002

The Irony Of Lawyers' Justice In America, Thomas L. Shaffer

Journal Articles

Our pastor recently finished a pretty good sermon, on the Parable of the Good Samaritan, with a story of his own about a dangerous curve on the highway into town.

The Parable of the Dangerous Curve brought to my mind Deborah Rhode's thorough, thoughtful assessment of American lawyers in the twenty-first century, and Dean Kronman's eulogy for the lost lawyer. The good Samaritans who sought to straighten the dangerous road spoke of roadwork as Deborah Rhode speaks of what legislatures, judges, and bar associations should do about lawyers. Maybe they thought modern speed and paving had made it dangerous—yearning, as …
