Book Of Gobi, Book 1: Siskiyou Smokejumper Base, 1943-1981, Stan Collins

Books on Smokejumping

The three volumes of the Book of Gobi were compiled in coordination with reunions held at the Siskiyou Smokejumper Base: Book 1, 2002; Book 2, Light and Image, 2006; and Book 3, Mountains and Desert, 2011. Each book has a rough chronology. Stories were submissions by both jumpers and those having an association with the Gobi. Interspersed with the stories are period newspaper articles, comments, and pictures.

All stories were personal responses as to what made the Gobi special or why was the Gobi special. The thirty-eight years of the stories in these three volumes reflect early …

The trial and execution of Socrates in Athens in 399 B.C.E. puzzles historians. Why, in a society enjoying more freedom and democracy than any the world had ever seen, would a seventy-year-old philosopher be put to death for what he was teaching? The puzzle is all the greater because Socrates had taught - without molestation - all of his adult life. What could Socrates have said or done than prompted a jury of 500 Athenians to send him to his death just a few years before he would have died naturally? Born in Berkeley in 1940, Frank Chin lived in the Motherlode country of California’s Sierra foothills during the Second World War before returning to the San Francisco Bay Area. He attended the University of California at Berkeley as an English major, but was drawn away to work for railroad companies throughout the west. Such early experiences of movement and transience would provide the foundations for the shifting settings of much of his drama, fiction, and criticism that would follow; additionally, this transience would also underlie the complex tone, treatment, and perception of Asian American identity that characterizes his work and …

Authorship And Termination Rights In Sound Recordings, Mary Lafrance

Scholarly Works

In late 1999, Congress amended the definition of "works made for hire" in § 101 of the Copyright Act to make explicit its intent to include sound recordings as a category of works eligible for this status. The amendment was repealed with retroactive effect less than a year later. All this happened—pardon the expression—in record time.

This odd course of events was precipitated by a request from the record industry, represented by the Recording Industry Association of America ("RIAA"), which persuaded Congress, shortly before passage of the Intellectual Property and Omnibus Communications Reform Act of 1999, to add a "technical …

In contrast to the limited judicial writings on the CTEA, there is a healthy stock of insightful scholarly works on the CTEA festooning the legal journals throughout the country. This article leaps into the scholarly fray and focuses on the domestic policy justifications and assumptions relied upon by Congress in enacting the CTEA. In so doing, this article argues that the CTEA is premised upon a wayward copyright philosophy and unsupported congressional assumptions. The article also posits a modest alternative to the CTEA that would be more consonant with the philosophical tenets of copyright and more apt to achieve the …
