Center for Urban Research and Learning: Publications and Other Works
In the Fall of 2000, State Representative Larry McKeon, at the urging of local community groups and residents, commissioned Loyola University Chicago’s Center for Urban Research and Learning (CURL) to provide an analysis of relevant data regarding housing and land use in the Uptown community. A Local Advisory Council (LAC) was created to review, evaluate, and advise the project staff as they collected and analyzed data sets. For the past two years, researchers at CURL have worked with Organization of the NorthEast (ONE), Representative McKeon, and the LAC to collect and analyze data from a variety of sources. The goal …

Between Fiction And Documentary: Dangerous Liaisons And The Self-Reflexive Film, Jennifer J. Bottinelli
Between Fiction And Documentary: Dangerous Liaisons And The Self-Reflexive Film, Jennifer J. Bottinelli
Theses and Dissertations
As the two primary modes of filmic representation, fiction and documentary have long been separated by their distinct associations with subjectivity and objectivity respectively. Documentary film, with its ties to lived reality, has been especially hampered by a too direct connection with objectivity. Regarding the documentary film's representation of actuality, there is a tendency for the authority behind the construction of the documentary image to go unexplored and unquestioned when the documentary subject is thought to be objectively represented. Neither fiction nor documentary image are likely to be destabilized when each mode neglects to recognize its connection to an alternative …

Speaking Of Coups Before They Happen: Kadavu, May-June 1999, Matt Tomlinson
Speaking Of Coups Before They Happen: Kadavu, May-June 1999, Matt Tomlinson
Pacific Studies
This essay is an examination of discourse I heard in Kadavu Island, Fiji, immediately after the national elections of May 1999. The election results were distressing to many Kadavuans and propelled the circulation of explicitly political discourse. I examine two related phenomena. First, I consider how Methodists' uses of the Bible did not change during the period of coup discourse circulation. In other words, counterintuitively (and contrary to some themes in the literature on Fiji), political talk of Fijian aboriginality did not increase the citation of Old Testament books with their themes of rightful homelands. This suggests that certain forms …

Liksom's Short Stories And The Ironies Of Contemporary Existence, Chris Pawling
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his paper, "Liksom's Short Stories and the Ironies of Contemporary Existence," Chris Pawling examines Rosa Liksom's short stories in her volume One Night Stands. Pawling proposes that Liksom's texts can be understood as postmodern pastiches (Jameson) of different literary voices which in turn are couched in an "affect-less" prose that attempt to inhabit the mental universe of the narrator/protagonist without necessarily endorsing any aesthetic or ethical point of view. Liksom's fictional universe is populated by individuals who are alienated from the life of predictable routines and are searching for "action" in scenes of low life in late-night city bars. …

The major considerations on this subject for a court are whether any limitation on adult uses is based on content, or whether it is based on the secondary effects of these uses on the surrounding community. There have been a number of instances in the last years in which federal courts have found adult use zoning restrictions to be acceptable, if they have been motivated by a desire to protect neighborhood quality, as contrasted with impermissible desire to ban the message purveyed by the adult uses.
For jurisdictions, zoning is the first line of defense in regulating sexually oriented uses. …
