Donaldson Koons was born in Korea on August 23, 1917 to Presbyterian missionary parents. He moved to the United States at the age of 17 and enrolled at the College of Wooster, in Ohio. He got his masters and Ph.D. in Geology at Columbia before enlisting in the military in 1943. Upon his return to the States he taught at Columbia and West Virginia University. He moved to Colby College in 1947, where he stayed until his retirement. He was appointed to the Maine Water Improvement Commission by Ken Curtis in 1967, and has been active in Maine environmental protection …

Housing Finance, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Housing Finance, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse
I would like to dwell on the rationale for the Central bank of the country to organize a Conference on Housing Finance and bring together all the various stakeholders involved in the housing and construction industry. First, the broad-based financial system reforms which involve restructuring of the financial institutions, liberalization of financial markets, introduction of financial engineering and new products and services, improvement in the quality of assets, provisioning of bad loans, mergers and acquisitions and a new model of non-bank financial companies have led to a partial cleansing up of the system. Although there is much to be achieved, …

On-Chip Actuation Of An In-Plane Compliant Bistable Micromechanism, Michael S. Baker, Larry L. Howell
On-Chip Actuation Of An In-Plane Compliant Bistable Micromechanism, Michael S. Baker, Larry L. Howell
Faculty Publications
A compliant bistable micromechanism has been developed which can be switched in either direction using on-chip thermal actuation. The energy storage and bistable behavior of the mechanism is achieved through the elastic deflection of compliant segments. The Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model was used for the compliant mechanism design, and for analysis of the large deflection flexible segments. To achieve on-chip actuation, the mechanism design was optimized to allow it to be switched using linear motion thermal actuators. The modeling theory and analysis are presented for three design iterations, with two iterations fabricated in the MUMP's process and the third in the SUMMiT …

Statistics Of The Contact Network In Frictional And Frictionless Granular Packings, Leo Silbert, Gary S. Grest, James W. Landry
Publications
Simulated granular packings with different particle friction coefficient μ are examined. The distribution of the particle-particle and particle-wall normal and tangential contact forces P(f) are computed and compared with existing experimental data. Here f≡F/F̅ is the contact force F normalized by the average value F̅ . P(f) exhibits exponential-like decay at large forces, a plateau/peak near f=1, with additional features at forces smaller than the average that depend on μ. Additional information beyond the one-point force distribution functions is provided in the form of the force-force spatial distribution function and the contact point radial distribution function. These quantities indicate that …

Mobicast: Just-In-Time Multicast For Sensor Networks Under Spatiotemporal Constraints, Qingfeng Huang, Chenyang Lu, Gruia-Catalin Roman
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
This paper is concerned with coordinated delivery of messages in sensor networks. The notion of multicast is re-examined in light of a new set of requirements that are specific to such networks. The result of this investigation is a new concept called mobicast. Mobicast entails the delivery of messages to large sets of nodes in a manner that satisfies a potentially dynamic set of spatiotemporal constraints. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of mobicast, we present a novel topology-aware protocol for sensor networks. Worst-case analysis shows that the protocol provides strong spatial and temporal delivery guarantees under a set of …

An Assessment Of Seawinds On Quikscat Wind Retrieval, David Draper, David G. Long
An Assessment Of Seawinds On Quikscat Wind Retrieval, David Draper, David G. Long
Faculty Publications
The scatterometer ocean wind retrieval process produces several possible solutions or ambiguities at each point, requiring a separate ambiguity selection step to infer a unique wind vector field. An ambiguity selection error occurs when the selected wind vector is not the closest ambiguity to the true wind. The current ambiguity selection routine for SeaWinds is ad hoc, but performs well under most circumstances. Factors such as instrument noise and rain can also cause the estimated wind flow to deviate from the true wind. A quality assurance (QA) analysis is performed to assess the ambiguity selection effectiveness and noise level of …
