Why National Missile Defense: A Test Of Three Competing Models., Christopher Lee Campbell Jan 2002

Why National Missile Defense: A Test Of Three Competing Models., Christopher Lee Campbell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation seeks to answer the question of why the United States is pursuing the deployment of a national missile defense (NMD) system at the present time. The explanation most often given by national security policy makers is that it is being constructed in response to the weapons programs of “rogue states.” States such as North Korea, Iran, and Iraq are seen as actively developing weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and the capability to deliver these weapons to the U.S. mainland. However, the proposal of this system poses problems. First, it has made many U.S. allies fear that its foreign …

A Tabu Search Approach For The Dynamic Space Allocation Problem., Juan R. Jaramillo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The dynamic space allocation problem (DSAP) is the assigning of activities to workspaces and idle resources to storage spaces while minimizing the total distance traveled by the resources during project duration. The inputs of the DSAP are: the schedule of project activities and the resources required to perform the activities, the layout of the floor plan, the capacity of the storage spaces, and the distances between locations. The output is a sequence of layouts containing the assignments of the activities and their resources to workspaces, as well as the idle resources to storage spaces. The DSAP is related to some …

Organic Beef A Production Guide, Steven Mccoy Jan 2002

Organic Beef A Production Guide, Steven Mccoy

Bulletins 4000 -

Premium markets are expanding worldwide for certified organic and biodynamic beef products – those grown in accordance with recognised organic production and processing standards.

Many agricultural areas in Australia have the potential to produce organic beef, and several Western Australian and Eastern States organic producers are already exporting to Japan. Supermarkets such as Coles and Woolworths have started to build the Australian domestic market.

Converting to an organic system can be easier - requiring fewer changes - in ‘low input’ rangeland cattle production than in more intensive pasture-based or feedlot production. But regardless of the type of enterprise, managing organic …

Symmetrically Coated Pellicle Beam Splitters For Dual Quarter-Wave Retardation In Reflection And Transmission, Rasheed M.A. Azzam, Fadi A. Mahmoud Jan 2002

Symmetrically Coated Pellicle Beam Splitters For Dual Quarter-Wave Retardation In Reflection And Transmission, Rasheed M.A. Azzam, Fadi A. Mahmoud

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

A trilayer pellicle that consists of a high-index center layer that is symmetrically coated on both sides by a low-index film can be designed to produce differential reflection and transmission phase shifts of ∓90° at oblique incidence and equal throughput for the p and the s polarizations. Such a device splits a beam of incident linearly polarized light into two orthogonal circularly polarized components that travel in well-separated angular directions. Examples of infrared dual quarter-wave retarders that use a symmetrically coated Ge pellicle at 77° angle of incidence are presented. A 50–50% splitter requires a symmetric pellicle with at least …

Angular Range For Reflection Of P-Polarized Light At The Surface Of An Absorbing Medium With Reflectance Below That At Normal Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam, Ericson E. Ugbo

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The range of incidence angle, 0 < φ < φe, over which p-polarized light is reflected at interfaces between transparent and absorbing media with reflectance below that at normal incidence is determined. Contours of constant φe in the complex plane of the relative dielectric constant ε are presented. A method for determining the real and imaginary parts of the complex refractive index, ε1/2 = n + jk, which is based on measuring φe and the pseudo-Brewster angle φpB, is viable in the domain of fractional optical constants, n, k < 1.

A Simulation Based Experiment For Comparing Amhs Performance In A Semiconductor Fabrication Facility, Gerald Mackulak, Paul Savory Jan 2002

A Simulation Based Experiment For Comparing Amhs Performance In A Semiconductor Fabrication Facility, Gerald Mackulak, Paul Savory

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

As the cost and complexity of constructing a semiconductor fabrication facility increases, responsive tools are needed for designing and planning its operations. Discrete-event simulation paired with design of experiments is an effective combination. This article demonstrates how simulation in combination with design of experiments is used to compare the intrabay layout of two automated material handling systems. The difference in stocker robot utilization, number of vehicle moves per hour, and average delivery time for the two intrabay layouts will be compared using a fractional factorial experimental design. The study demonstrates that the distributed storage option is preferable for maximizing manufacturing …

Prediction Of Soakout Time Using Analytical Models, B. Chakravarthy, H. P. Cherukuri, R. G. Wilhelm Jan 2002

Prediction Of Soakout Time Using Analytical Models, B. Chakravarthy, H. P. Cherukuri, R. G. Wilhelm

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

In precision manufacturing enterprises, machine parts at nonstandard temperatures are often soaked to standard temperature prior to making any dimensional measurements. The soakout times are usually determined using lumped heat-transfer models where the part temperatures are assumed to be uniform. This article discusses conditions under which lumped model assumptions are valid by comparing lumped analyses for various shapes and materials with the more general finite element results. In addition, the effect of ambient temperature cycling on part response is also studied.

Shovelnose Sturgeon Lridovirus Sampling In The Missouri River, Below Gavins Point Dam, South Dakota And Nebraska Jan 2002

Shovelnose Sturgeon Lridovirus Sampling In The Missouri River, Below Gavins Point Dam, South Dakota And Nebraska

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

Numerous sturgeon species have been integral components of significant fisheries within North America. Species of sturgeon have played an important historical role in recreational and commercial fisheries of various riverine and Great Lakes communities throughout the United States. Present commercial fisheries for sturgeon species are virtually non-existent, in part due to overexploitation, coupled with an inherently long period of time for sturgeon species to become sexually mature.

Two species within the Missouri River basin (pallid sturgeon, Scaphirhynchus albus) and shovelnose sturgeon, Scaphirhynchus platorynchus) have been recently found to harbor a suspect virus (currently being referred to as the …

The P23 Protein Of Citrus Tristeza Virus Controls Asymmetrical Rna Accumulation, Satyanarayana Tatineni, Siddarame Gowda, Maria A. Ayllon, Maria R. Albiach-Marti, Shailaja Rabindran, William O. Dawson Jan 2002

The P23 Protein Of Citrus Tristeza Virus Controls Asymmetrical Rna Accumulation, Satyanarayana Tatineni, Siddarame Gowda, Maria A. Ayllon, Maria R. Albiach-Marti, Shailaja Rabindran, William O. Dawson

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Citrus tristeza virus (CTV), a member of the Closteroviridae, has a 19.3-kb positive-stranded RNA genome that is organized into 12 open reading frames (ORFs) with the 10 3' genes expressed via a nested set of nine or ten 3'-coterminal subgenomic mRNAs (sgRNAs). Relatively large amounts of negative-stranded RNAs complementary to both genomic and sgRNAs accumulate in infected cells. As is characteristic of RNA viruses, wild-type CTV produced more positive than negative strands, with the plus-to-minus ratios of genomic and sgRNAs estimated at 10 to 20:1 and 40 to 50:1, respectively. However, a mutant with all of the 3' genes …

A Physically Based Two-Dimensional Infiltration Model For Furrow Irrigation, Christopher J. Skonard, Derrel L. Martin Jan 2002

A Physically Based Two-Dimensional Infiltration Model For Furrow Irrigation, Christopher J. Skonard, Derrel L. Martin

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

A two-dimensional physically based infiltration model was developed for furrow
irrigation. Infiltration was simulated using the Green-Ampt infiltration method. The Green-Ampt infiltration parameters are available from numerous sources, unlike the Kostiakov infiltration parameters. Simulation tests showed the two-dimensional model capable of estimating cumulative infiltration volume within 8% compared to simulated infiltration using the finite element model, Hydrus-2D. Application of the two-dimensional model in a surface irrigation advance model allows irrigation performance parameters to be predicted without extensive soil experiments.

Impact Of Manure Application On Phosphorus Runoff And Soil Erosion, Daniel T. Walters, C. Gossin, Gregory J. Teichmeier, Galen E. Erickson Jan 2002

Impact Of Manure Application On Phosphorus Runoff And Soil Erosion, Daniel T. Walters, C. Gossin, Gregory J. Teichmeier, Galen E. Erickson

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Phosphorus (P) losses from agricultural land is a serious environmental issue because of the impact of P on freshwater eutrophication (McDowell, et al., 2001). The movement of P from soil to surface water is impacted by P input to soil and manure management practices that impact P transport processes. Twenty-one natural runoff plots were established to monitor the effect of time and method of composted beef feedlot manure application and feed P input on net losses of bio-available P and sediment in surface runoff. Reducing feed P inputs resulted in a 33% reduction in manure P content. Runoff losses of …

The Pgp1 Mutant Locus Of Arabidopsis Encodes A Phosphatidylglycerolphosphate Synthase With Impaired Activity, Changcheng Xu, Heiko Härtel, Hajime Wada, Miki Hagio, Bin Yu, Chris Eakin, Christoph Benning

Bin Yu Publications

Phosphatidylglycerol is a ubiquitous phospholipid that is also present in the photosynthetic membranes of plants. Multiple independent lines of evidence suggest that this lipid plays a critical role for the proper function of photosynthetic membranes and cold acclimation. In eukaryotes, different subcellular compartments are competent for the biosynthesis of phosphatidylglycerol. Details on the plant-specific pathways in different organelles are scarce. Here, we describe a phosphatidylglycerol biosynthesis-deficient mutant of Arabidopsis, pgp1. The overall content of phosphatidylglycerol is reduced by 30%. This mutant carries a point mutation in the CDP-alcohol phosphotransferase motif of the phosphatidylglycerolphosphate synthase (EC 2.7.8.5) isoform encoded by …

Stat6 Mediates Interleukin-4 Growth Inhibition In Human Breast Cancer Cells, Jennifer L. Gooch, B. Christy, D. Yee

PCOM Scholarly Works

In addition to acting as a hematopoietic growth factor, interleukin-4 (IL-4) inhibits growth of some transformed cells in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we show that insulin receptor substrate (IRS)-1, IRS-2, and signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6) are phosphorylated following IL-4 treatment in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. STAT6 DNA binding is enhanced by IL-4 treatment. STAT6 activation occurs even after IRS-1 depletion, suggesting the two pathways are independent. To examine the role of STAT6 in IL-4-mediated growth inhibition and apoptosis, a full-length STAT6 cDNA was transfected into MCF-7 cells. Transient overexpression of STAT6 resulted in …

Captive Dolphins, Tursiops Truncatus, Develop Signature Whistles That Match Acoustic Features Of Human-Made Model Sounds, Jennifer L. Miksis, Peter L. Tyack, John R. Buck

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

This paper presents a cross-sectional study testing whether dolphins that are born in aquarium pools where they hear trainers’ whistles develop whistles that are less frequency modulated than those of wild dolphins. Ten pairs of captive and wild dolphins were matched for age and sex. Twenty whistles were sampled from each dolphin. Several traditional acoustic features (total duration, duration minus any silent periods, etc.) were measured for each whistle, in addition to newly defined flatness parameters: total flatness ratio (percentage of whistle scored as unmodulated), and contiguous flatness ratio (duration of longest flat segment divided by total duration). The durations …

Wave Kinematics At High Sea States, David Farmer, Li Ding, Donald Booth, Martin Lohmann Jan 2002

Wave Kinematics At High Sea States, David Farmer, Li Ding, Donald Booth, Martin Lohmann

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Measurements of currents close to the ocean surface and within the crests of large, steep waves have been acquired with an incoherent bistatic sonar mounted on the seafloor. The sonar uses a single narrow-beam transmitter/receiver and three fan-beam receivers set in a triangular configuration around the source. Acoustic pulses transmitted from the seafloor are scattered by bubble clouds and the sea surface to the four receivers and may be transformed into velocity components as a function of elevation. Individual estimates of the currents at, and close to, the surface are made with sufficient temporal resolution to identify kinematics in the …

A mesoscale 3D model (Meso‐NH) is used to assess the relative importance of convection (transport and scavenging), chemistry, and advection in the vertical redistribution of HOx and their precursors in the upper tropical troposphere. The study is focused on marine deep convection over the South Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ) during the PEM‐Tropics B Flight 10 aircraft mission. The model reproduces well the HOx mixing ratios. Vertical variations and the contrast between north and south of the SPCZ for O3 are captured. Convection uplifted O3‐poor air at higher altitude, creating a minimum in the 9–12 km …
