Failing Georgia: The Case Against The Ban On Social Promotion, Donald R. Livingston, Sharon M. Livingston Dec 2002

Failing Georgia: The Case Against The Ban On Social Promotion, Donald R. Livingston, Sharon M. Livingston

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Our analysis begins with an examination of the state of Georgia's rationale for the decision regarding social promotion that was based on the perceived views that teachers have on the issue. Research suggests, however, that teachers hold contradictory opinions concerning the use of standardized tests for high stakes decisions, such as promotion, and are not aware of the consequences most children suffer when they fail a grade. ...

The Qualitative Report

In this article, I reflect on my experience running a small family research project at a local jail. I focus on methodological and policy issues inherent in controversial research, as well as my own personal reactions to the criminal justice system. Implications of insider status are discussed as they apply to researcher stance and responsibilities in corrections settings.

Novel General Expressions That Describe The Behavior Of The Height Equivalent Of A Theoretical Plate In Chromatographic Systems Involving Electrically-Driven And Pressure-Driven Flows, B. A. Grimes, S. Lüdtke, K. K. Unger, Athanasios I. Liapis Dec 2002

Liapis

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Novel general expressions are constructed and presented that describe the behavior of the height equivalent of a theoretical plate (plate height), H, as a function of the linear velocity, Vx, along the axis, x, of the column and the kinetic parameters that characterize the mass transfer and adsorption mechanisms in chromatographic columns. Open tube capillaries as well as columns packed with either non-porous or porous particles are studied. The porous particles could have unimodal or bimodal pore-size distributions and intraparticle convective fluid flow and pore diffusion are considered. The expressions for the plate height, H, presented in this work could …

Enhancing The Rigor Of Qualitative Research: Application Of A Case Methodology To Build Theories Of It Implementation, Guy Paré Dec 2002

Enhancing The Rigor Of Qualitative Research: Application Of A Case Methodology To Build Theories Of It Implementation, Guy Paré

The Qualitative Report

This paper presents and illustrates how the approach proposed by Eisenhardt (1989) for building theories from intensive qualitative research, more precisely case study research, can help information systems and medical informatics researchers understand and explain the inherently dynamic nature of IT implementation. The approach, which adopts a positivist view of research, relies on past literature and empirical data as well as on the insights of the researcher to build incrementally more powerful theories. We describe in some detail how this methodology was applied in a particular case study on IT implementation in the health care context and how the use …
