Development Of A Community-School Partnership In A Brazilian Elementary School: A Case Study, Renata Osborne Carvalho

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This case study focused on describing the perspectives of educators and community members involved in a school-community partnership in an elementary public school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Their perspectives included what they saw as the partnership's history, influence of the Friends of the School Project, benefits, conflicts, processes, and future expectations. This research was significant because community involvement in Brazilian public schools has been growing recently. The researcher was a participant observer in the school, observing activities, interviewing adults, and collecting documents related to the partnership. The result was a holistic narrative of the case study from the triangulation …

End Of Race As We Know It: Slavery, Segregation, And The African American Quest For Redress, Paul Anthony Dottin Jan 2002

End Of Race As We Know It: Slavery, Segregation, And The African American Quest For Redress, Paul Anthony Dottin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This is a study of one of the most controversial public matters concerning race in America today: the African American reparations movement for slavery and segregation. This issue is hotly contested because racial identity and the relative status and well-being of ethnic groups in America, a configuration I refer to as "race as we know it," is inextricably linked to matters of prejudice, pride, property, and public policy both presently and historically. Any substantial shift in the relative position of blacks and whites, America's most iconically opposed groups, promises to alter fundamental dynamics between these two populations, effectively ending "race …

First, the number of Research universities with an enrollment management plan is slightly lower than universities without a plan. Second, the Enrollment Management Division was the most prevalent organizational structure created. Third, increasing overall enrollment and improving graduation rates were chosen most frequently by the universities as their most important goals. Fourth, technology and physical structure strategies were utilized the most for recruitment. And, policies and procedures strategies were used the most for retention. Fifth, the strategies most frequently used were identified …

Examination Of Three Competing Hypotheses Concerning The Origin Of The Indo-European Language Family, Shannon Marie Workman Jan 2002

Examination Of Three Competing Hypotheses Concerning The Origin Of The Indo-European Language Family, Shannon Marie Workman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The thesis will examine three hypotheses which seek to explain the origin of the Indo-European language family. Each will be treated according to the following criteria: the specific data selected, how the data sets used in the hypotheses correlate to one another, the methodology used by the author(s), and how well the final conclusion correlates to the data. The thesis will also discuss how the Bantu and Romance languages spread. The mechanisms of dispersal of these two languages will be examined and the supporting data will be compared to the mechanisms of dispersal and the supportive data of the three …

Evaluation Of Flexible Pipes Under Shallow Burial Depths, Ning. Wang Jan 2002

Evaluation Of Flexible Pipes Under Shallow Burial Depths, Ning. Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Flexible plastic and metal pipes are increasingly being used for drainage and storm sewers. When flexible pipes are buried at shallow depths, the pipe behavior will not depend on the dead load pressure above the crown, but rather on the live load pressure (vehicle load). Field tests were designed to evaluate the performance of large diameter flexible pipes of 36 in. (915 mm.) and 48 in. (1050 mm.) under shallow burial depths subjected to the actual vehicle loading. The test pipes included high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes, steel pipes and aluminum pipes. AASHTO standard pipe installation procedures …

Review Of Soil Conservation Legislation : Carnarvon Horticultural Area, Jean-Pierre Clement Jan 2002

Review Of Soil Conservation Legislation : Carnarvon Horticultural Area, Jean-Pierre Clement

Agriculture reports

Lower Gascoyne Management Strategy The Carnarvon horticultural area has suffered considerable erosion damage following flooding of the Gascoyne River. Factors contributing to the erosion include a move to greater vegetable production, the carrying out of unauthorised earthworks and general confusion about the laws that apply to land management and erosion control. With this context, the purpose of this report is: • to clarify the laws applying to erosion control in the Carnarvon horticultural area; • to identify the public authorities with management responsibility for erosion control; and • to suggest a model by which erosion controls and management responsibilities can …

Identifying And Building On Strengths Of Children With Serious Emotional Disturbances, Michael Orval Taylor

Dissertations and Theses

The aim of this study is to explore strengths assessments and the participation of parents in assessment of strengths and functioning of their children challenged by serious emotional disorders. The children in this study have a high level of exposure to mental illness, domestic violence and substance abuse in their biological families. These children are living with family members or foster families in the community, with the majority at continuing risk of placement outside of their homes and communities due to serious emotional and behavioral problems.

The research questions investigated are the concordance of families and professionals in assessment of …

The Response Of Mice To Infection By The Parasitic Nematode Trichinella: A Comparison Of Trichinella Spiralis And Trichinella Pseudospiralis, Barry Clayton Anderson Jan 2002

The Response Of Mice To Infection By The Parasitic Nematode Trichinella: A Comparison Of Trichinella Spiralis And Trichinella Pseudospiralis, Barry Clayton Anderson

Dissertations and Theses

The intracellular parasite Trichinella is a genus in phylum Nematoda that contains six named species including Trichinella spiralis and Trichinella pseudospiralis. These parasites infect a large variety of wild and domestic animals, human beings and a few species of birds. The parasitic strategies and the pathological effects on the host between trichinella spiralis and Trichinella pseudospiralis are quite different.

The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of the physiological, immunological and pathological differences between these two species of Trichinella using infections in the mouse as a model. In the course of this research I have attempted to …

The Rhetoric Of Motive And Intent, Guyora Binder Jan 2002

The Rhetoric Of Motive And Intent, Guyora Binder

Journal Articles

This article offers a critical analysis of the traditional maxim that motive is irrelevant to criminal liability. It retraces the history of this principle to show how its meaning has changed and its validity has declined over time. Originally promoted by reformers, the irrelevance of motive maxim derived meaning from their efforts to codify criminal law. In this context, the irrelevance of motive stood for two related reforms: (1) legislators should condition criminal liability on expectations of harm rather than desires, and (2) courts should require proof of statutory mental elements. With the success of codification, however, the irrelevance of …

Punishment Theory: Moral Or Political?, Guyora Binder Jan 2002

Punishment Theory: Moral Or Political?, Guyora Binder

Journal Articles

This article argues that the justification of punishment is best conceived as a problem of political theory rather than moral philosophy. Noting the familiar charge that utilitarianism permits framing the innocent, it argues that retributivism is equally vulnerable to the charge that it permits lynching the guilty. It argues that both critiques unfairly attribute lawlessness and dishonesty to the respective punishment theories. As a result, they mischaracterize both as theories about what individuals should do, rather than what acts legitimate government should authorize. In so doing, they disregard how committed the founders of the respective theories were to the rule …

Executive Power In Youngstown's Shadows, Patricia L. Bellia Jan 2002

Executive Power In Youngstown's Shadows, Patricia L. Bellia

Journal Articles

Fifty years after it was handed down, the Supreme Court's decision in Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer is among the most important of the Court's separation of powers cases. This Article explores two quite different legacies of the Youngstown case. First, Youngstown has a symbolic or rhetorical power, in that it stands as an example of a court invalidating the actions of a coordinate branch of government in a politically delicate context. When a court wields this weapon, it can take some cover in Youngstown's shadows, and the possibility of a court exercising this power disciplines the executive …

The Internationalization Of Legal Relations, Roger P. Alford Jan 2002

The Internationalization Of Legal Relations, Roger P. Alford

Journal Articles

What exactly does it mean to say that "legal relations" are becoming "internationalized"? For me, the concept is in large measure a vertical question: the degree to which international law is affecting (some might say encroaching on) traditional domestic law, particularly state law. This is particularly so with treaty law. In the United States at least, internationalization might be thought of as simply another arm of federalism, with Congress stipulating that certain sales of goods will be governed by international law, not the Uniform Commercial Code. Or that a certain category of child adoptions will be governed by federal treaty …

Choosing The Judges Who Choose The President, John Copeland Nagle Jan 2002

Choosing The Judges Who Choose The President, John Copeland Nagle

Journal Articles

The stakes for the selection of judges have never been so high. Federal and state court judges have ruled on such divisive issues as education funding, exclusionary zoning, capital punishment, same-sex marriages, school prayer, affirmative action, partial birth abortion, and legislative redistricting.

The selection of those who possess such awesome powers is bound to be contested. But the mode of choosing judges is a secondary question. The debate concerning the selection of judges is fueled by a broader debate about the appropriate role of judges.

The procedures for choosing those judges are caught up in this larger substantive debate, and …

Disputants' Decision Control In Court-Connected Mediation: A Hollow Promise Without Procedural Justice, Nancy A. Welsh Jan 2002

Disputants' Decision Control In Court-Connected Mediation: A Hollow Promise Without Procedural Justice, Nancy A. Welsh

Faculty Scholarship

Professor Deborah Hensler suggests in the lead article of this Symposium issue that the courts' embrace of facilitative, interest-based mediation may have been ill-conceived. She argues that there is insufficient evidence to conclude that litigants are more satisfied with mediation than with adjudicative alternatives such as arbitration and trial. She also urges that there is sufficient evidence to show that litigants prefer processes that vest decision control in third parties. Both of these assertions are subject to challenge,' but this Comment will focus upon the significance of giving decision control to the disputants in consensual processes.

Using available research, this …

An Unconstitutional Stereotype: Catholic Schools As Pervasively Sectarian, Gerard V. Bradley Jan 2002

An Unconstitutional Stereotype: Catholic Schools As Pervasively Sectarian, Gerard V. Bradley

Journal Articles

The Supreme Court first held public assistance to religious schools unconstitutional in 1971 in Lemon v. Kurtzman. From then until now the concept of “pervasively sectarian” has played a central role in “parochaid” jurisprudence; every holding against “direct” aid has rested upon it as a necessary premise. “Pervasively sectarian” refers to the assertedly religious (“sectarian”) character of the entire curriculum at parochial schools. Religion, it is said, so permeates the whole educational program that “direct aid” to any aspect of that program inescapably aids religion itself. And that, it is said, violates the Establishment Clause. Because aid statutes typically aim …

Domestic Partnership: Missing The Target?, Margaret F. Brinig Jan 2002

Domestic Partnership: Missing The Target?, Margaret F. Brinig

Journal Articles

Chapter 6, Domestic Partnerships, like many other parts' of the ALI Principles of the Law of Family Dissolution, functions as a set of default rules. Under the ALI Principles for domestic partnerships, therefore, if the parties meet state presumptive requirements for domestic partnerships and have not otherwise contracted, the rules of Chapter 6 apply. Usually, law sets default provisions to 1) what most parties would want; or 2) to what will promote efficiency. I will discuss these two concepts in turn, illustrating how the ALI domestic partnerships provisions satisfy neither ex ante hypothetical bargaining nor efficiency criteria, and thus that …

Religious Syncretism As A Factor Ensuring Economic And Social Security In The Country, Yevhen Kharkovshchenko, Vitalii S. Nitsenko, Eugene Piletsky, Mariia Nesterova Jan 2002

Religious Syncretism As A Factor Ensuring Economic And Social Security In The Country, Yevhen Kharkovshchenko, Vitalii S. Nitsenko, Eugene Piletsky, Mariia Nesterova

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The article points out the potential of religious syncretism to ensure the political, social and economic security of Ukraine. The interpretation of religious syncretism not only as a sociocultural phenomenon, but also as a process of formation of this phenomenon is substantiated. The study singled out the stage of interfaith dialogue from the process of religious syncretism, which should form the basis for mutual understanding of faiths. This stage is considered as a multi-level communication of churches with separate structural directions, including the communicative direction of the denomination-society, in particular, the issue of economic and social security, and interfaith communication. …

Insects And The Native Vegetation Of Nebraska, Brett C. Ratcliffe, Paul C. Hammond Jan 2002

Insects And The Native Vegetation Of Nebraska, Brett C. Ratcliffe, Paul C. Hammond

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The principal plant biomes in Nebraska are briefly reviewed. The relationships of insects, particularly scarab beetles and butterflies, to these biomes are discussed, especially as it relates to their distributions. Human-induced alteration of habitat has significantly influenced the present distributions of both plants and insects relative to their historical distributions at the time of Euro-american colonization of Nebraska in the mid-1800s. Examples of range expansion or contraction are presented for exemplar taxa of scarab beetles and butterflies

Performance Of Fisheries Sector Planning In Bangladesh, S Rahman, Kk Ahmed Jan 2002

Performance Of Fisheries Sector Planning In Bangladesh, S Rahman, Kk Ahmed

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The overall planning performance of the fisheries sector in Bangladesh over the past three decades was evaluated. Performance has been unsatisfactory largely due to contiguous overestimation of the planning targets and the existence of serious financial, technological, institutional and social constraints. Despite the remarkable growth in export earnings and a stable GDP contribution of 3.2–5.6%, budget allocations remained extremely low (0.7–1.4% of total outlay) in subsequent plan periods. Production from marine fisheries performed satisfactorily with slow growth in recent years, while inland fisheries with initial poor performance showed improvements from the mid-1980s owing to increased productivity in culture fisheries, particularly …

Market Orientation, Competitive Strategy Type And Performance In Independent Retail Businesses : A Contingency Analysis In A Market Town Context, Philip Rhys Megicks Jan 2002

Market Orientation, Competitive Strategy Type And Performance In Independent Retail Businesses : A Contingency Analysis In A Market Town Context, Philip Rhys Megicks

Plymouth Business School Theses

In recent years there has been significant interest in the performance of independent retail businesses located in UK market towns as they face up to new patterns of competition and demand. However prior to this study there has been only a very limited understanding of the factors that contribute the success and failure of these individual small businesses. This thesis fills a gap in the literature relating to the performance of these small firms through empirical analysis and the application of management research methods in a contextual setting. Based upon a comprehensive review of relevant literature spanning the boundaries of …
