The regulation of health and environmental risks has generated transatlantic controversy concerning precaution and the precautionary principle (PP). Conventional wisdom sees the European Union endorsing the PP and proactively regulating uncertain risks, while the United States opposes the PP and waits for evidence of harm before regulating. Without favouring either approach, this paper critically analyses the conventional depiction of transatlantic divergence. First, it reviews several different versions of the PP and their different implications. Second, it broadens the transatlantic comparison of precaution beyond the typical focus on single-risk examples, such as genetically modified foods. Through case studies, including hormones in …

In recent years, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) have required entities to significantly increase the use of fair value for measuring, presenting, and disclosing in their financial statements assets, liabilities, and specific components of equity. The business environment and GAAP that apply to the transactions and events in that environment have become more complex. Along with that complexity and the increased use of fair value measurements and disclosures comes an increasing acknowledgment of the importance of fair values in the financial reporting process. The fishing right guaranteed by the fishing clause of the Stevens Treaties between the United States and the Indians of Western Washington should be considered a trinity of rights: a right of access, a right of equitable apportionment, and a habitat right. While seven different Supreme Court decisions and scores of lower court decisions examine the contours of the first two elements of the fishing right, the contours of the final element of the right remain unsettled. No appeals court has ruled on whether there, is an implied habitat right. While some trial courts have skirted the issue, only one …

The purpose of this study was to build theory about parasocial relationships and to examine what affect, if any, religion had on parasocial relationships. Using qualitative methods, the researcher watched the show three times with five women followed by an in-depth interview. The women chosen were LDS stay-at-home moms who had watched a soap opera for at least a year.
From this data came several surprising findings about religion and soap opera viewing. The women said they did not feel guilty about the content of the shows, rather the time required to watch. This guilt was alleviated by structuring their …

The growth of direct broadcast satellite television distribution to the home as a viable competitor to cable and terrestrial broadcast has fostered the availability of special interest or niche channels and therefore provided greater choice to the viewer. This study, based on uses and gratifications theory, examined the relationships among ritual and instrumental viewing motivations and satisfactions, viewer religiosity, and viewing attentiveness as they related to the selection of a niche television channel, Brigham Young University Television.

The controversy concerning evangelization and conversions in contemporary India may be productively interpreted as a conflict between stories, between what John Haught refers to as "power-bestowing narratives," or between what Gerald Larson calls "comprehensive interpretive frameworks." These Hindu stories and Christian stories are "discordant," not only with each other, but with other stories within their own traditions, thus fostering the mutual mistrust that thoroughly colors the debate. My task is to sketch four such narrative frameworks, each centered upon an image of India and corresponding to one of four communities involved in the controversy: conservative Hindu nationalists, more secularist Hindus, …

The contemporary controversy in India, centered on the issue of evangelization and conversion, has elicited a variety of responses from both Hindus and Christians. Swami Dayananda Saraswati, a well known Vedanta teacher and founder of Arsha Vidya Pitham, equates conversion with violence because of the pain it causes to the family and community of the convert. He likens the religions of the world to ancient historical monuments and argues that these religions, like the pyramids of Egypt, must be preserved and protected. He expresses his approval for what he describes as "nonaggressive" religions that do not seek to win converts. …

This paper presents the results of an indirect assessment of the personality of U.S. president George W. Bush, conducted 1998–2000 from the conceptual perspective of personologist Theodore Millon.

Psychodiagnostically relevant data regarding Bush was extracted from biographical sources and media reports and synthesized into a personality profile using the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with Axis II of DSM–IV.

The personality profile yielded by the MIDC was analyzed in accordance with interpretive guidelines provided in the MIDC and Millon Index of Personality Styles manuals. Bush was found to be …
