The Harlem Community Justice Center (Justice Center) officially opened in July 2000 with all the fanfare of a major civic event. The Chief Judge of the State of New York, Judith Kaye, and the Mayor of the City of New York, Rudolph Guiliani, were keynote speakers, lauding the combined efforts of private administrators and public officials in reopening a deteriorating but magnificent 1892 court building in the center of Harlem. The ceremony began and ended with gospel sung by the Addicts Rehabilitation Center Choir, a musical reflection of one component of the Justice Center's jurisdiction. This research was conducted to estimate the true digestible Trp (dTrp) requirements in nursery, growing, and late finishing pigs and the effects of supplemental Trp on physiology, behavior, and meat quality. Five experiments were conducted to estimate the dTrp requirement in nursery pigs. Using broken-line regression analysis, dTrp requirements were 0.21, 0.20, and 0.18% for Phase I (5.2 to 7.3 kg), II (6.3 to 10.2 kg), and III (10.3 to 15.7) nursery pigs. In addition, four experiments were conducted to estimate the dTrp requirements in growing and finishing pigs. Using broken-line regression analysis, the dTrp requirement of pigs weighing 30.9, …

The structure of West Virginia’s food systems is analyzed within the context of a changing structure of the U.S. and global food systems. Further, the economic role of food systems in West Virginia is investigated both at the state and an industry level using a combination of a descriptive analysis and an impact analysis. ARCVIEW is used for mapping in the descriptive analysis. The impact analysis is done using an input-output model. Retroviruses exhibit high genetic variability, which is generated by mutations and recombination during viral replication. This can lead to rapid emergence of viral variants resistant to antiretroviral drugs. A better understanding of retroviral replication may lead to the development of improved antiviral drug therapy and effective vaccines to retrovirus-related diseases. The fact that retroviral nucleocapsid protein (NC) is multifunctional and plays crucial roles in viral replication makes it a good target for antiviral drug development. Compositions of wintering waterbird communities are dependent upon food accessibility (via water depth), biomasses and sizes of their invertebrate prey, which in turn are influenced by the hydrology and sediments of wetland habitats. The hydrology and sediments of marsh ponds on the Gulf Coast Chenier Plain probably are affected by structural marsh management (levees, water control structures and impoundments; SMM) and salinity; therefore, SMM and salinity ultimately may affect wintering waterbird communities. I examined patterns and timing of ontogeny and relative growth in five species of blenny (Teleostei: Blenniidae) from the northern Gulf of Mexico by assigning a suite of discrete character state scores to ontogenetic events (10 external traits; 218 total specimens). This is the first study to evaluate developmental patterns in reef-associated fishes relative to the timing of metamorphosis and settlement by applying scaling techniques and statistical methods to quantify, differentiate, and select criteria for defining intervals of development across taxa. The traditional format of electrophoresis, the slab gel, is quickly being replaced by capillary and microdevice platforms, which offer improvements in cost, resolution, speed, quantitation and automation in genetic analyses. These techniques also employ a variety of separation matrices while the slab gel is limited to agarose and polyacrylamide. The research presented here explores the use of these electrophoretic formats for the detection of single nucleotide mutations using two genetic models associated with human disease. This dissertation examines how Southern literary representations of the natural world were influenced by, and influenced, the historical, social, and ecological changes of the 1930s and 1940s. Specifically, I examine the ways that nature is conceived of and portrayed by four authors of this era: Erskine Caldwell, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Zora Neale Hurston, and William Faulkner; through their works, I investigate the intersections of race, class, and gender with the natural environment. Walking and swimming are the most common forms of locomotion used routinely by decapod crustaceans, but some have evolved ways of locomoting throughsubstrates, notably sand. Two such digging species, of different infraorders, are spanner crabs (Ranina ranina; Brachyura) and spiny sand crabs (Blepharipoda occidentalis; Anomura). Videotape and electromyogram analysis showed that digging by these species is similar, but Raninahas a wider locomotor repertoire than Blepharipoda: for instance, Raninacan walk forward on the benthos, whereas Blepharipoda(and other sand crabs) cannot walk. A study was conducted to determine the feasibility of concentrating the wastewater of a butter/powder factory for use as an animal feed. Two concentrated products were evaluated: recovered milk product (RMP), which is the direct factory waste stream; and formulated recovered milk product (FRMP), which is a product made by combining RMP and separator de-sludge in a 3:1 ratio. Three pilot scale dryer systems were used to concentrate the product: a spray dryer, a roller dryer, and a pulse combustion dryer. The primary goals of nutrition rehabilitation centers (NRCs) are to recuperate malnourished children and improve caretakers' child feeding practices. Children ( N = 116) and caretakers ( N = 108) newly enrolled in four NRCs in Accra, Ghana were recruited and studied longitudinally at four time points: admission, interim, exit and postexit . Data collection included observations of activities at the NRCs, anthropometry, interviews, dietary assessments, and weighing of NRC foods. Caretaker/child pairs attended the NRCs 33% ± 21% of their total stay, and the majority (78%) discontinued participation before being officially discharged. At exit , ≥60% of children had …

The Hispanic population in Alabama has rapidly increased in recent years, raising public health officials' concern about their health status and use of health care services. This study examined health services' utilization by first-generation Hispanic mothers and children in greater Birmingham. Constructs from the Health Belief Model and the Behavioral Model of Health Services Utilization were integrated to form the study's theoretical framework. Generalizability of possible seasonality of cardiovascular disease risk factors has not been demonstrated, and, if present, biologic mechanisms remain uncertain. This was addressed by examining cross-sectional seasonal variation in cardiovascular disease risk factors among Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) subjects, and cross-sectional and longitudinal seasonal variation in and interrelationships between lipids and thyroid hormone levels in a Lipid Variation Influence of Stress (LVIS) study subsample.
