The Effect Of Toxic Microcystis Aeruginosa On Four Different Populations Of Daphnia, Melanie L. Blanchette, James F. Haney

Cyanobacteria reduce the fitness of many Daphnia species, and blooms in eutrophic lakes may place strong selective pressure upon these primary consumers. This study examines the ability of daphnids to resist the deleterious effects of toxic Microcystis and determine if this resistance is related to the trophic conditions of their native lakes. Three populations of Daphnia pulex/pulicaria were examined; D. pulicaria from eutrophic Klamath Lake in Oregon, D. pulex from eutrophic Old Durham Reservoir in New Hampshire, and D. pulicaria from oligotrophic Russell Pond in New Hampshire. Shallow coastal lagoons are subject to anthropogenic nutrient enrichment and disturbances that result in loss of seagrass ecosystems. These losses have generated a desire by coastal managers for tools to monitor existing seagrass meadows, and to restore those that have been lost. The following Chapters in this dissertation address aspects of these issues. Chapter 1 documents a nearly 16 month study of Zostera marina seasonal and year-to-year leaf and rhizome morphology and growth in Ninigret Pond, R.I. Analysis And Simulation Of Skeletonema Costatum (Grev.) Cleve Annual Abundance Patterns In Lower Narragansett Bay 1959 To 1996, David Gerald Borkman

A 38-year time series (1959 to 1996) of weekly observations of abundance of the marine diatom Skeletonema costatum and related plankton habitat parameters in lower Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island was analyzed. A phytoplankton growth model was then developed for investigation of Skeletonema annual abundance pattern regulating mechanisms. A ca. 45% decline in Skeletonema abundance was detected, from 2,292 cells ml−1 (prior to September 1974) to 1,263 cells ml−1 (after August 1980). Winter-spring decreases were greatest, with declines in March Skeletonema abundance from near 3,400 cells ml−1 before a 1977 change-point to mean abundance of ca. 1,000 cells ml−1 after 1977. …

Infection with an obligate intracellular bacterium, the Chlamydia trachomatis lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV/L2) strain or the guinea pig inclusion conjunctivitis serovar of Chlamydia psittaci, leads to apoptosis of host cells. The apoptosis is not affected by a broad-spectrum caspase inhibitor, and caspase-3 is not activated in infected cells, suggesting that apoptosis mediated by these two strains of Chlamydia is independent of known caspases. Overexpression of the proapoptotic Bcl-2 family member, Bax, was previously shown to induce caspase-independent apoptosis, and we find that Bax is activated and translocates from the cytosol to the mitochondria in C. psittaci-infected cells. Jet propulsion, based on examples from the Hydrozoa, has served as a valuable model for swimming by medusae. However, cnidarian medusae span several taxonomic classes (collectively known as the Medusazoa) and represent a diverse array of morphologies and swimming styles. Does one mode of propulsion appropriately describe swimming by all medusae? This study examined a group of co-occurring hydromedusae collected from the waters of Friday Harbor, WA, USA, to investigate relationships between swimming performance and underlying mechanisms of thrust production. Prey selection patterns were quantified for a sympatric group of hydromedusae from Friday Harbor, WA. Selection patterns varied between species, but were largely replicable between sample dates and resembled dietary patterns found in similar studies from neighboring regions. Ambush-foraging medusae (Aglantha digitale, Sarsia tubulosa, and Proboscidactyla flavicirrata) fed primarily on crustacean and ciliated prey but the dietary niches of these hydromedusan species centered on different fractions of the available plankton. Consequently, little dietary overlap occurred between the ambush foraging hydromedusae. In contrast, the dietary niches of cruising predators (Aequorea victoria, Mitrocoma cellularia, and …

Ultrasound speckle carries information about the interrogated scattering microstructure. To effectively analyze this scattering microstructure using a monochromatic signal, a separate transmit and receive crossbeam geometry is implemented. The complex echo signal is represented as a superposition of signals due to all scatterers within an effective resolution cell volume, VE, in the crossbeam geometry. An estimate of such an effective resolution cell volume is required in order to remove system effects when attempting to characterize material using moment analysis. Laboratory and field tests were conducted to evaluate the hypothesis that factors such as the total organic carbon (TOC) contents and groundwater-surface water interactions (GSI) in the sediments can affect chemical desorption, bioavailability and benthic organism exposure. Laboratory studies were conducted with the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon fluoranthene (FLU) and the herbicide trifluralin (TF). Toxicokinetic parameters were determined for Lumbriculus variegatus and Hyalella azteca in water-only exposures to 0, 5, 20 and 50 µg/L of the compounds and bioaccumulation was measured during exposures to 0, 100 and 200 mg/kg of FLU and TF spiked onto sediments from Lakes Erie and Huron. …

Multiphoton-absorption processes have recently attracted growing interest because of the potential impact on a wide spectrum of applications, ranging from data storage to photodynamic therapy. From the materials standpoint, particular interest is centered in designing chromophores that exhibit a large two-photon cross-section. The current research is focused on establishing synthetic routes that lead to the formation of derivatives of N,N-diphenyl-(7-benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2-ylamine which contain meta functionalization. A bromoethoxy functionalized chromophore, N-phenyl-N-(3-(2-bromoethoxy)phenyl)-7-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren- 2-ylamine , was synthesized and used as a polymer pendent while a vinylbenzyloxy chromophore, N-phenyl-N-(3-(4-vinylbenzyloxy)phenyl)-7- (benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2-ylamine, was synthesized as a hydrosilation substrate. This Article hopes to extend Critical Race Theory's social construction of race theory by emphasizing ethnicity as well as race. The Rwandans are undoubtedly within the so-called "Black race." Historically, they have also been socially constructed as consisting of different races and ethnicities, even though many scholars and Rwandans do not see ethnic, much less racial, distinctions. Some of these Rwandans who did see such differences participated in the genocide.

The work that has focused on within-school segregation has been most concerned with how this phenomenon limits the educational opportunities and might incur a psychological toll on the mass of Black students who find themselves relegated to lower-ability classrooms in integrated schools. This Article, however, allows us to begin to examine the other side of the coin. It reports on how within-school segregation practices create psychological, social, and educational pressures for those few Black students who have escaped enrollment in the least rigorous courses in their school. Several chemical and radiological contaminants are present in an unconfined aquifer underlying the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site in southeast Washington State. Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], previously used as an anticorrosive in plutonium production reactors on the shoreline of the Columbia River, is of particular concern because of its conservative nature, toxicity to humans and aquatic life, and proximity to protected salmon spawning habitat. Hydrogeologic data are abundant from the unconfined aquifer, but are lacking from the hyporheic zone through which Cr(VI) is transported into the river. The current study explores the expression of emotion coping behaviors in the developmental context of temperamental and socialization experiences. 45 30- month-olds, whose families were involved in a larger longitudinal study, participated in a laboratory assessment including 4 contexts designed to provide an experience of stress for the child. Child coping behaviors were coded according to a system by Grolnick (1996) which rates behaviors along a continuum of adaptiveness from focusing on the course of frustration, to self-comforting and other-directed behaviors, to behavior that is re-oriented toward the environment. Conservation institutions worldwide such as the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew (U.K.) have frequently used in vitro propagation (micropropagation) as a valuable tool to support the conservation of some threatened and endangered species. Although many of the endemic species of Florida 's scrub ecosystem are extremely rare, they have not been widely researched using tissue culture techniques. In this paper, the amenability of Conradina etonia, an endangered scrub mint species, to in vitro growth and propagation was investigated using shoot tips. Callus formed and grew rapidly in the presence of both cytokinins and auxins. Rhizogenesis from callus occurred in both …
