Some Properties Of Crude Carboxymethyl Cellulase Of Aspergillus Niger Z10 Wild-Type Strain, Gökhan Coral, Burhan Arikan, M. Ni̇sa Ünaldi, Hati̇ce Güvenmez

A carboxymethyl cellulase enzyme was prepared from a wild type strain of Aspergillus niger Z10. Analyses of the enzyme preparation by SDS-PAGE revealed two protein bands showing cellulolytic activity. The molecular weight of these bands was estimated to be around 83,000 and 50,000. The optimum temperature of the enzyme was observed to be around 40 °C. It was found that the enzyme's activity has a broad pH range between 3 to 9 and 41.2% of the original activity was retained after heat treatment at 90 °C for 15 min.

In this study, the production of Poly-b-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) was determined in 1 Rhizobium japonicum, 6 Rhizobium cicer, 8 Rhizobium spp. and Bradyrhizobium japonicum USDA 110. The content of according to dry cell weight was determined to be 1.38-40.0%. In our study, Rhizobium spp. 2426, which produced the highest percentage yield of PHB, and Rhizobium spp. 640, which produced the intermediate percentage yield of PHB, were first selected among all the strains, and then the effect of different carbon and nitrogen sources on PHB production in these strains was tested. Epipelic And Epilithic Algae Of The Yedigöller Lakes (Erzurum-Turkey), Bülent Şahi̇n

The epipelic and epilithic algae of the Yedigöller Lakes were studied qualitatively between June and September 2001. As a result 90 taxa (43 belonging to Bacillariophyta, 33 to Chlorophyta, 11 to Cyanophyta and three to Euglenophyta) were determined. Based on the algal community composition, the Yedigöller Lakes can be characterized as oligotrophic.

The Treatment Efficiency Of Plankton In The İvedik Drinking Water Treatment Plant, Ankara, Ni̇lsun Demi̇r, Doğan Atay

The phyto-zooplankton composition and some physical and chemical properties of drinking water were investigated in the İvedik water treatment plant. The mean values of phytoplankton abundance were 641±92 and 438±55 ind/ml in the Kurtboğazı and Çamlıdere inlets, respectively. More than 50% of the phytoplankton belonging to the classes Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Cryptophyceae and Dinophyceae were removed in the clarifiers. The treatment efficiency of phytoplankton ranged from 89 to 100% after the last chlorination. The mean values of zooplankton abundance were 93±23 and 59±18 ind/l in the Kurtboğazı and Çamlıdere inlets, respectively. The treatment efficiency of zooplankton varied between 97% and 100% …

The role of phospholipase D (EC 3.1.4.4) was studied in the changing of phospholipid content during cotton seed (Gossipium hirsutum 108-G) maturation. To define phospholipase D activity cotton seed homogenates were incubated in a water-methanol environment at 37 °C for various time intervals (15, 30, 60, 120, and 300 min). Enzyme activity was judged from the formation of hydrolysis products - phosphatidic acid and phosphatidylmethanol. The phospholipid content was defined by using thin-layer chromatography with a follow up analysis of phosphorus quantity in phospholipid fractions. Refractory auditory hallucinations are a continuing problem in the treatment of schizophrenic, schizoaffective and psychotically depressed patient populations as well as patients with psychotic disorder, not otherwise specified. To date, little is known about the assessment of such hallucinatory states. Currently there are only a few instruments designed to examine the characteristics of auditory hallucinations. The study examined the reliability and validity of the Beliefs About Voices Questionnaire-Revised (BAVQ-R) in a sample of psychotic outpatients experiencing refractory auditory hallucinations. This research explores the coming-out processes of 11 transgendered individuals who underwent female-to-male sex reassignment. Its purpose is to expand upon the cultural literacy of clinicians called upon to support transgendered clients who present with the intent to transition. The thesis is predicated on the argument that the differently-gendered constitute an understudied and discrete cultural minority, similar to ethnic, racial and sexual minorities, for whom identity formation is similarly impacted by socio-cultural influences. Qualitative content analysis of transcribed semi-structured interviews was conducted. According to the Hybrid Model of Executive Function for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), hyperactive and combined types, a delay in behavior inhibition causes secondary deficits in four executive function; non-verbal working memory, verbal working memory, reconstitution and self-regulation of affect/motivation/arousal. The deficit in non-verbal working memory causes a deficit in psychological sense of time, which in tum impairs self-regulation in those with ADHD. This single case study investigated concurrent deficits in behavior inhibition, non-verbal working memory and psychological sense of time in a 1O-year-old male with ADHD, combined type. This study was done to provide basic empirical data on the Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory with the focus on establishing a personality profile for recidivistic juvenile offenders. The subjects of this study consisted of four groups of male and female adolescents between the ages of 15 and 17 years. The control group (n = 50) consisted of adolescents not adjudicated either delinquent or dependent. Shrimp Adjust Their Sex Ratio To Fluctuating Age Distributions, Eric Charnov, Robert Hannah

Long-term data sets that quantitatively confirm basic ecological theory are rare for field populations. Highly variable recruitment often causes wide temporal variation in population age distribution and basic theory for adaptive sex ratio often predicts sex ratio tracking' to match the fluctuating age distribution. Using sex-changing shrimp as a model system, we test this in a new data set of 20 years duration. The new data support the theory, despite intense fishery exploitation that itself has greatly altered the age distribution in recent years.

Methods of slab-geometry molecular dynamics computer simulation were tested, compared, and applied to the prediction of activity coefficients, interfacial electrochemistry characterization, and ion transport through a model biological channel-membrane structure. The charged-sheets, 2-D Ewald, corrected 3-D Ewald, and corrected particle-particle-particle-mesh (P3M) methods were compared for efficiency and applicability to slab-geometry electrolyte systems with discrete water molecules. The P3M method was preferred for long-range force calculation in the problems of interest and was used throughout.

The transition from primary to secondary school has a considerable impact upon the social and academic lives of adolescents. An adolescent's sense of belonging (SoB) is important for determining school satisfaction and success during this transition. As SoB is partly developed through an individual's peer social network, this study explored the peer social networks for adolescents who have a SoB. Using the Psychological Sense of School Membership (PSSM) scale (Goodenow, 1993a), five females and three males with a high SoB completed sociological maps and participated in interviews in order to determine the structure and function of their peer social networks. …

In the late 1950s, a community of Aboriginal people had formed a camp at ‘Allawah Grove' in South Guildford, Perth. The public and the Western Australian Government considered them a nuisance, and wished to remove them from the area. But in 1960, a voluntary organization known as the Native Welfare Council offered to provide the Allawah Grove residents with supervision, housing and training. Their aim was to equip residents with the knowledge and skills that would enable them to live successfully as nuclear families in mainstream society. Leptin is a 16kDa peptide hormone that has recently been implicated in human reproductive processes. Like other hormones, leptin exerts its influence through its receptor. Of the three major isoforms of the receptor (OB-Ra, OB-Rb, and 0B-Re), OB-Ra (the dominant short form) has been implicated in transport processes within rat and human placentas, suggesting a role for it in implantation and pregnancy maintenance. The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are ligand-dependent transcription factors that are a subfamily of nuclear hormone receptors. The present study examined whether cognitive (beliefs), affective (emotions) and I or behavioural processes predicted young women's attitudes towards their sexual health practices. For pragmatic reasons, safer sex promotion has largely relied on the provision of factual information to promote behaviour change. Although the importance of emotional and behavioural influences has been indicated, these elements have not traditionally been included in sexual health interventions. The eutrophication of wetlands has created ideal breeding and growth conditions for certain species of Chironomidae (midge). In urban areas, high abundances can cause adult midges to become a nuisance to nearby residents. The shallow and often eutrophic wetlands of Perth (Western Australia) provide ideal conditions for the growth of certain Chironomid species, resulting in common nuisance problems. To control nuisance plagues a range of management options are available, including light traps, biological controls, insect growth regulators and pesticides.
