Myers explores hearsay exeptions by examining three exceptions: excited utterances, statements for purposes of diagnosis or treatment, and the residual hearsay exception. The focus is child declarants, and these exceptions play key roles in child abuse litigation.

Dr. AU, Tung Steven, taught at Lingnan University (Guangzhou) during 1946-47. He later became a board member of the Trustee of Lingnan University in US in 1973. Dr. AU had extensive knowledge of the historical development of Lingnan University. This publication supplemented and extended an earlier publication entitled Lingnan University : a short history based primarily on the records of the University's American Trustees written by Prof. Corbett, Charles. The contents covered also the post-1952 development of Lingnan University in various occasions, including the re-establishment of Lingnan College in 1967.

This Article responds to the advocates of "progressive race blindness" with several critiques of their central claims. Part I examines the contours of progressive race blindness in greater detail, giving centrality to the emergence of this theory in legal scholarship. Part I sets forth the common themes articulated in progressive race blindness arguments and highlights important differences among its proponents. Part II isolates several problems with the progressive race blindness literature and demonstrates that these weaknesses make the literature unhelpful as a political or legal theory and even dangerous to the cause of antiracism. Through a review of literature, this paper will provide an explanation of multiple chemical sensitivity. Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is characterized by a low-level exposure to environmental chemicals resulting in multi organ symptoms reported by the patient. The diagnosis of MCS is difficult to come about because MCS is unknown to many medical professionals or is not recognized as an illness by others. Also, there exists no single diagnostic test to confirm multiple chemical sensitivity. High-value specialty chemicals are usually obtained from natural products by extracting with generally regarded as safe (GRAS) solvents. Because organic solvents are quite often used, high operating and disposal costs occur. When compared to traditional solvents, water is an interesting alternative because of its low operating and disposal costs. Milk thistle contains compounds (taxifolin, silychristin, silydianin, silybinin A, and silybinin B) that display hepatoxic protection properties. This paper examines the batch extraction of silymarin compounds from milk thistle seed meal in 50°C, 70°C, 85°C and 100°C water as a function of time. The potential for grain bin accidents exists each year on Arkansas farms and farms across the nation. The trend toward increasing utilization of on-farm grain drying and storage could lead to an increase in grain bin accidents. The sharp contrast between a safe, efficient operation and one that leads to injury or death can be represented as sets of farmer-decisions and subsequent chance events. A model was constructed to define the risk associated with grain bin entry and in-bin activity so that safety interventions could be identified and implemented to reduce the probability of injury and death. The characteristics of juveniles who commit crimes and a variety of treatment philosophies for juvenile offenders were examined through literature and individual case studies. The literature review and three case studies provided insight into the difficult challenge of providing effective treatment programs for juvenile offenders.

The effects of single-base-pair near-terminal and terminal mismatches on the dissociation temperature (T(d)) and signal intensity of short DNA duplexes were determined by using oligonucleotide microarrays and neural network (NN) analyses. Two perfect-match probes and 29 probes having a single-base-pair mismatch at positions 1 to 5 from the 5' terminus of the probe were designed to target one of two short sequences representing 16S rRNA. Nonequilibrium dissociation rates (i.e., melting profiles) of all probe-target duplexes were determined simultaneously. Analysis of variance revealed that position of the mismatch, type of mismatch, and formamide concentration significantly affected the T(d) and signal intensity. …

A new method for design and scale-up of thermocatalytic processes is disclosed. The method is based on optimizing process energetics by decoupling of the process energetics from the DRE for target contaminants. The technique is applicable to high temperature thermocatalytic reactor design and scale-up. The method is based on the implementation of polymeric and other low-pressure drop support for thermocatalytic media as well as the multifunctional catalytic media in conjunction with a novel rotating fluidized particle bed reactor.

The analysis of human skeletal remains continues to be an important factor in the archaeological investigations of ancient cemeteries. Studies of human remains had become progressively marginalized in many parts of the classical world during the 20th century. Recently skeletal studies have re-emerged to become of increasing importance in reconstructing the culture history of Sicily. A review of the history of osteological and related investigations on Sicily, including publications and the recent initiation of several important studies in molecular biology, demonstrates the considerable progress made in recent years. Ancient Antibiotics : Tetracycline In Human And Animal Bone From The Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt, Corey Maggiano

Two decades ago archaeologists in northern Africa discovered evidence that an antibiotic was somehow included in diet of ancient peoples, possibly affecting the health of the population. It has been proposed that the causative organisms are Streptomyces aureofaciens - ubiquitous, mold-like, tetracycline-producing bacteria that could have contaminated grain products. Upon consumption, tetracyclines are incorporated into developing or remodeling bone, remaining observable under ultraviolet light for thousands of years. The current project focuses on an analysis of Roman-Egyptian human and animal bone from the Dakhleh Oasis in southwestern Egypt (100 BC to AD 360). Protein Farnesyltransferase And Protein Prenylation In Plasmodium Falciparum, Debopam Chakrabarti, Thiago Da Silva, Jennifer Barger, Steve Paquette, Hetal Patel, Shelley Patterson, Charles M. Allen

Comparison of the malaria parasite and mammalian protein prenyltransferases and their cellular substrates is important for establishing this enzyme as a target for developing antimalarial agents. Nineteen heptapeptides differing only in their carboxyl-terminal amino acid were tested as alternative substrates of partially purified Plasmodium falciparum protein farnesyltransferase. Only NRSCAIM and NRSCAIQ serve as substrates, with NRSCAIM being the best. Peptidomimetics, FTI-276 and GGTI-287, inhibit the transferase with IC50 values of 1 and 32 nm, respectively. Incubation of P. falciparum-infected erythrocytes with [H-3]farnesol labels 50- and 22-28-kDa proteins, whereas [H-3]geranylgeraniol labels only 22-28-kDa proteins.
