New Species Of Tricolor Leptotyphlops (Reptilia: Squamata: Leptotyphlopidae) From Central Peru, Edgar Lehr, Van Wallach, Gunther Kohler, Cesar Aguilar

A new species of slender blind snake, Leptotyphlops alfredschmidti, is described from two localities (2940 and 3090 m) from the western Andean slopes of central Pern (Departamento de Ancash, Provincia de Huarmey). Leptotyphlops alfredschmidti is referred to the Leptotyphlops tesselatus group. The new species shares with Leptotyphlops teaguei and Leptotyphlops tricolor a tricolor body pattern of red, black, and yellowish longitudinal stripes but differs from all members of the group in several features of coloration pattern and pholidosis.

Herbivorous insects are rarely able to eat all kinds of available plant material. The majority of phytophagous insects are oligophagous, feeding on a variety of host plants that are botanically and/or chemically related (Strong, et al. 1984; Jermy, et al. 1990; Bemays and Chapman 1994). This provides these insects the flexibility to exploit a variety of plant species; however, even closely-related plants can differ in such phenotypic characters as growth form, leaf shape, and chemistry. Immune responses against cardiac myosin and group A streptococcal M protein have been implicated in the pathogenesis of rheumatic heart disease. Although cardiac myosin is known to produce myocarditis in susceptible animals, it has never been investigated for its role in production of valvular heart disease, the most serious sequelae of group A streptococcal infection in acute rheumatic fever. In our study, cardiac myosin induced valvulitis in the Lewis rat, and epitopes responsible for production of valvulitis were located in the rod region. Human and rat cardiac myosins induced severe myocarditis in the Lewis rats as expected. A purified S2 …

Recently, South Africa has led the world in rates of HIV/AIDS infection. Particularly among young adults, the prevalence of HIV has soared, now reaching 25 percent. The statistics suggest a high level of unprotected sex and risky sexual behavior even in the midst of high levels of knowledge. Research has focused on the dynamics of individuals’ and partners’ sexual decisionmaking. Little is known, however, about the larger context in which those decisions are made. In communities where early age of childbearing is common and HIV prevalence is high, adolescent boys and girls may place themselves at risk of HIV to realize their childbearing preferences. In this paper, we analyze survey data from Kwa-Zulu-Natal province that explores whether an association exists between pregnancy preferences and behavioral and perceptual measures of HIV risk among adolescents in South Africa. Our analysis is based on data from 1,426 sexually active respondents aged 14-22 who participated in wave 1 of the “Transitions to Adulthood in the Context of AIDS in South Africa” study. Recent scientific innovations, and proposed legislation have raised - questions about the nature of the constitutional right to reproductive freedom, and in particular about whether there is a constitutional "right to clone." This Essay urges that as a matter of substantive due process, rationality review is probably appropriate, and that restrictions on both reproductive and therapeutic cloning would and should survive constitutional scrutiny. At the same time, many of the arguments for banning both forms of cloning are based on ignorance, myths, and speculation. In this Essay, Professor Radhika Rao, explores three reasons for the popular repugnance toward human cloning and their consequences for the question whether or not there is a constitutional right to clone a human being. She argues that, although the impulse to ban human cloning may stem from the wrong reasons, human cloning may still be banned for the right reasons.

In 1997, California appointed an Advisory Committee to evaluate the medical, ethical, and social implications of "human cloning" for reproductive and non-reproductive purposes. This Essay, written by a member of the Advisory Committee, extends the conversation begun in the report, "Cloning Californians?" about the ethics of "non-reproductive human cloning" focusing on language, science, societal informed consent, and social justice.
