The Herbicide Paraquat Causes Up-Regulation And Aggregation Of Α-Synuclein In Mice: Paraquat And Α-Synuclein, Amy B. Manning-Bog, Alison L. Mccormack, Jie Li, Vladimir N. Uversky, Anthony L. Fink, Donato A. Di Monte

α-Synuclein-containing aggregates represent a feature of a variety of neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's disease (PD). However, mechanisms that promote intraneuronal α-synuclein assembly remain poorly understood. Because pesticides, particularly the herbicide paraquat, have been suggested to play a role as PD risk factors, the hypothesis that interactions between α-synuclein and these environmental agents may contribute to aggregate formation was tested in this study. Paraquat markedly accelerated the in vitro rate of α-synuclein fibril formation in a dose-dependent fashion. When mice were exposed to the herbicide, brain levels of α-synuclein were significantly increased. This up-regulation followed a consistent pattern, with higher α-synuclein …

Light chain amyloidosis involves the systemic pathologic deposition of monoclonal light chain variable domains of immunoglobulins as insoluble fibrils. The variable domain LEN was obtained from a patient who had no overt amyloidosis; however, LEN forms fibrils in vitro, under mildly destabilizing conditions. The in vitro kinetics of fibrillation were investigated using a wide variety of probes. The rate of fibril formation was highly dependent on the initial protein concentration. In contrast to most amyloid systems, the kinetics became slower with increasing LEN concentrations. African Customary Law is the totality of norms comprised of what has variously been described as "native law," "native customary law," "primitive law," "folk law," "informal law," "non state law," "indigenous law" and even "tribal law." The nomenclature conceptualizes the perception of customary law as being inferior to other laws within a legal system.' It also affirms the distinctiveness with which African Customary Law has been regarded, while evaluating the response of African legal polities to normative developments in the international arena. The subjects of this article are the nhos, especially non-human animals, for the reason that they are the most difficult class to reign in with the right of self-interest. But it is true that self-interest has far broader application to human embryos, human stem cells, and human cloning. These quasi-person candidates are put aside for now. In this article, a fusion of biology and law is used to suggest this new theory for extending U.S. Constitutional rights to quasi-person nhos. This article explores the regulatory paradox allowing these large, crew-intensive vessels, operating in extreme maritime conditions, to be classified as uninspected vessels. Section I of the article explores the legislative history of the current regulatory scheme and its possible relationship to the Magnuson Act while Section H examines the difference in the qualification requirements between crewmembers on inspected and uninspected vessels Section III considers any possible mitigation of safety discrepancies between inspected vessels and uninspected fish processing vessels because fish processing vessels require certification by the American Bureau of Shipping. This article first examines Von Eiff's legal predecessors: earlier Florida cases that defined the constitutional dimension of familial rights and first attempted to reconcile grandparent visitation with those rights. Indeed, the stage was actually set for Von Eiff by two cases that rejected constitutional challenges to the grandparent visitation statute. The first used no supporting authority. The second equated the rights of single parents with those of married parents prior to dismissing both as unsubstantial. This paper describes the development and implementation of a course, Integration of Technology in Math and Science Education, to introduce elementary and middle school pre-service teachers to real technology skills that they can use in their future classrooms. Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The purpose of this study was to determine if reformed science and math courses at community colleges and the university were impacting education majors as they began a teaching career. The reformed courses, in contrast to typical lecture classes, implemented inquiry-based methods that emphasized deep understanding of fundamental science and math concepts. Trained evaluators, utilizing the Reformed Teaching Observation Protocol (RTOP) gathered a total of 86 classroom observations to gauge the level of reform that beginning teachers (one to three years’ teaching experience) were implementing in grades 5-12. Climate change has had a drastic impact on the planet on a biological, political, and socioeconomic level. The excessive consumption of natural resources and human-induced pollution has contributed to rising temperatures, intensified weather patterns, and an increase in natural disasters (Nations, 2019). This has led to high levels of eco-anxiety and grief in younger generations, driven by psychological factors, misinformation, and governmental resistance to meaningful change which has influenced inaction in individuals (Hickman et al, 2021). The method of polarized fluorescence depletion (PFD) has been applied to enhance the resolution of orientational distributions and dynamics obtained from fluorescence polarization (FP) experiments on ordered systems, particularly in muscle fibers. Previous FP data from single fluorescent probes were limited to the 2nd- and 4th-rank order parameters, and , of the probe angular distribution (ß) relative to the fiber axis and , a coefficient describing the extent of rapid probe motions. We applied intense 12-µs polarized photoselection pulses to transiently populate the triplet state of rhodamine probes and measured the polarization of the ground-state depletion using a weak interrogation …

This article is part of the Symposium, Sustainable Agriculture: Food for the Future. Recognizing that, to date, farms had largely escaped regulation under the Clean Water Act, and that agricultural nonpoint source pollution is a leading contributor to impaired water quality, this article advocates for a regulatory response to such pollution. It considers existing programs to control nonpoint source pollution and demonstrates that they are inadequate. The article makes three recommendations: (1) an increased federal regulatory presence is needed; (2) the costs of implementing nonpoint source controls should be distributed in a pragmatic way that recognizes the extraordinary organizational presence …

Many women diagnosed with breast cancer m the last decade are either living with active treatment for the disease or are classified as cured but living with the sequelae of the disease or treatment. Most research has been on the physical aspects of the disease and conducted during or immediately after active treatment. Information beyond the physical dimension of women's experiences is small and narrowly focused, and research beyond 5 years is almost nonexistent. A full depiction of the multidimensional nature of being diagnosed with, treated for, recovering from, and living with the aftermath of breast cancer is lacking. The …

American schools traditionally have reflected and promoted societal values of autonomy and independence in the development of the individual child. This limited perspective on how humans come to know focuses on the accrued cultural capital of each learner and neglects the role of 'the other' in the construction of meaning. Such a view can be especially debilitating for students who have been identified as marginal learners. During 1997-2000, our research group participated in a major field study to determine the absolute circulation of the Subpolar North Atlantic. We successfully tracked 50 isopycnal RAFOS floats which measured pressure, temperature, and dissolved oxygen. The floats were ballasted for the 27.5 σ &thetas; density surface, which is found in the lower subtropical thermocline waters of the North Atlantic. A comparison of our field results to historical hydrography for the region shows that the oxygen sensors provided an accuracy of about 5% over periods exceeding one year. This Article offers a critical reassessment of U.S. approaches to intellectual property protection for plant innovation. Three developments make this reassessment timely. First, the Supreme Court has finally confirmed that utility patent claims to plants and seeds satisfy the 35 U.S.C. Section 101 subject matter eligibility requirement. Plant innovation in the United States is now subject to utility patent protection, as well as concurrent protection under the Plant Variety Protection Act (PVPA). However, little work has been done to explain the role of PVPA protection in a system of concurrent protection, or to develop a coherent policy vision within which …

This article explores the origins and precise meaning of the term "organic act," which is widely used in public land law. The evolution in the meaning of the term reflects larger shifts in the role of legislation in public resource management. The article illustrates this with an analysis of the 1997 Refuge Improvement Act, a substantial revision of the charter for the Refuge System and the first major statute governing public land management enacted since the 1970s.
