This study explores the psychometric qualities of the twenty-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) with a sample of 262 men who have battered their female partners and have attended a court recommended domestic violence program. Specifically, this study explores the three-factor structure, proposed by the authors of the TAS-20 (Bagby et al., 1993; Bagby, et al., 1994a), with a sample of domestic violence offenders. The study seeks to determine if the subscales of the TAS-20 demonstrate internal consistency and if the variables of age,Education, and income correlate with alexithymia scores. This study examined the impact of cognitive style preference, as defined by Dr. Michael Kirton's Adaption-Innovation (A-I) theory, on aviation flight instruction in the context of a higherEducation setting. The instrument associated with A-I theory measures an individual's cognitive style preference on a scale ranging from highly adaptive to highly innovative. This study examined the effect of videotaped normative information regarding stepfamily development and functioning on level of perceived stepfamily adjustment. Secondarily, the study attempted to identify demographic variables to discriminate between high and low perceived stepfamily adjustment. Participants were 132 clinical and nonclinical stepfather families formed after divorce and recruited in York County, Pennsylvania and Baltimore County, Maryland. Biological mothers, stepfathers, and adolescent children aged 14–17 rated their perceptions of stepfamily adjustment at pre-test, viewed the videotape, and/or rated their perceptions of stepfamily adjustment at post-test. This study examined whether perceived self-efficacy and health value predict: (a) metabolic control and (b) diabetes specific quality of life in individuals with Type 2 diabetes. Sixty-six adults with Type 2 diabetes between the ages of 35–65 were recruited from a diabetes treatment center in Southwestern Indiana. Participants were administered a demographic questionnaire, the Diabetes Self-Efficacy Scale, the Health Value Survey, and the Diabetes Quality of Life Measure. A measure of metabolic control was also obtained. Two standard multiple regression analyses were performed. The interaction of myosin subfragment 1 (S1) with actin-tropomyosin-troponin (regulated actin) is highly nucleotide dependent. The binding of S1 or S1-ADP (but not S1-ATP nor N,N′-ρ-phenylenedimaleimide-modified S1-ATP) to regulated actin activates ATP hydrolysis even in the absence of Ca2+. Investigations with S1 and S1-ADP have led to the idea that some actin sites are directly blocked toward the binding of S1 either by tropomyosin or troponin. The blocked state is thought to occur only at ionic strengths greater than 50 mM. The question is whether nonactivating S1 binding is blocked under the same conditions. DNA-based vaccines were employed to assess protective immunity against herpes simplex virus in experimental infections of hairless (strain SKH1) and BALB/c mice. Mice were vaccinated with plasmids containing the herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) glycoprotein B (gB) or D (gD) genes under the human cytomegalovirus immediate-early promoter control. Vaccines were injected intramuscularly (i.m.) or intraperitoneally (i.p.) as purified DNA alone or as formulations supplemented with different non-ionic block copolymers. Antibody responses were assessed by immunofluorescence and radioimmunoprecipitation assays. The presence of the capacitative Ca2+ entry mechanism was investigated in porcine oocytes. In vitro-matured oocytes were treated with thapsigargin in Ca2+-free medium for 3 h to deplete intracellular calcium stores. After restoring extracellular calcium, a large calcium influx was measured by using the calcium indicator dye fura-2, indicating capacitative Ca2+ entry. A similar divalent cation influx could also be detected with the Mn2+-quench technique after inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate-induced Ca2+ release. In both cases, lanthanum, the Ca2+ permeable channel inhibitor, completely blocked the influx caused by store depletion. Heterologous expression of Drosophila trp in porcine oocytes enhanced the thapsigargin-induced Ca2+ influx. …

The mammalian sex determining gene, SRY, is the founding member of the new growing family of Sox (SRY-like HMG-box gene) genes. Sox genes encode transcription factors with diverse roles in development, and a few of them are involved in sex determination and differentiation. We report here the existence of Sox genes in the rice field eel, Monopterus albus, and DNA sequence information of the HMG box region of five Sox genes. The Sox1, Sox4 and Sox14 genes do not have introns in the HMG box region. The Sox9 gene and Sox17 gene, which each have an intron in the conserved …

Bovine brucellosis is a serious zoonotic disease affecting some populations of Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) and bison (Bison bison) in the Greater Yellowstone Area, USA. The fear that elk and/or bison may spread Brucella abortus to livestock has prompted efforts to reduce or eliminate the disease in wildlife. Brucella abortus strain RB51 (RB51) vaccine has recently been approved for use in cattle. Unlike strain 19 vaccine, RB51 does not cause false positive reactions on standard brucellosis serologic tests. If effective, it may become the vaccine of choice for wildlife. Brucella abortus strain RB51 is used as a vaccine because it induces antibodies that do not react on standard serologic tests for brucellosis allowing differentiation between vaccination and infection. Strain RB51 was evaluated in captive elk (Cervus elaphus) to determine if vaccination protected against abortion following experimental challenge. Thirty elk were vaccinated intramuscularly with 1.0 × 1010 colony-forming units (CFU) of strain RB51 in March 1998. Fourteen of these were given a booster dose of 1.13 × 1010 CFU exactly 1 yr later. The Ta (transcribed, subset a) subfamily of L1 LINEs (long interspersed elements) is characterized by a 3-bp ACA sequence in the 3′ untranslated region and contains ∼520 members in the human genome. Here, we have extracted 468 Ta L1Hs (L1 human specific) elements from the draft human genomic sequence and screened individual elements using polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR) assays to determine their phylogenetic origin and levels of human genomic diversity. One hundred twenty-four of the elements amenable to complete sequence analysis were full length (∼6 kb) and have apparently escaped any 5′ truncation. A census of 53 adolescent females was conducted over a period of time beginning July 15, 2001 and ending March 5, 2002. Each subject was surveyed by using an interview with 66 items. The resources examined in this census were means of transportation and the social support structure before the female became an adolescent. The census found that 72 percent (N=53) of the adolescent females interviewed do not have a car, and 79 percent do not use public transportation. The census also found that 77 percent of the adolescent females interviewed do depend on their family/friends for transportation, and eighty-five …

The Ecuadorian indigenous movement has emerged in the last decade as the most important social and political movement in the country. The driving organizations behind the movement, CONAIE (Confederadon de Nacionalidades Indigenas del Ecuador), a social organization. and Pachakutik Movimiento Pluri-Nacional (Pluri-national movement), a political organization, have taken different approaches to fortifying indigenous identities, challenging the policies of the Ecuadorian government, and uprooting the subtle but persistent racist ideologies that have been discriminatory and exclusionary for over 500 years. I argue that Pachakutik's involvement within the political system has a greater chance of effecting long-term change for indigenous peoples in …

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is an indolamine hormone produced by the pineal gland that works to regulate sleep/wake cycles and activity rhythms. The effects of melatonin in metabolism are far from understood. Melatonin was injected into the fiddler crab, Uca pugilator, to investigate the effects of melatonin on hemolymph glucose and lactate levels. Following injection at t=O, hemolymph samples were collected at t=O.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 5.0 hours. Melatonin caused a decrease in the stress response to injection and also caused delayed hyperglycemia. Melatonin-injected crabs also retained the glucose and lactate rhythymicity when compared to saline-injected crabs. Glucose and lactate rhythms followed …

The only procedure used frequently to reduce the risk of invasion by ballast-mediated biota is open-ocean exchange of ballast water, a procedure in which vessels release coastal water and replace it with oceanic water. Limited information exists concerning the effects of transport upon the aquatic microbial community throughout transit and following open-ocean exchange, A transoceanic voyage aboard a commercial bulk carrier afforded us the opportunity to sample the microbial community in exchanged and unexchanged ballast-water holds during the journey from Hadera, Israel to Baltimore, USA. Carbonate dissolution has been widely observed in shallow water tropical sediments. However, sediment budgets C have generally not been closed with respect to the amount of acid required to produce the observed carbonate dissolution. Recently it has been suggested that enhanced oxygen transport into sediments through the roots and rhizomes of sea grasses might play a role in resolving this mass balance problem. We conducted studies of sea grass-carbonate sediment interactions around Lee Stocking Island, Exuma Islands, Bahamas to further examine this problem. [1] Up to 2 μM of nitrate anomaly, N*, were found in the upper nutricline at the South East Asia Time-series Study (SEATS) site in the northern South China Sea (SCS). These concentrations were among the higher values reported in the Pacific and indicate the significant contribution of the remineralization of nitrogen-rich organic matter formed by nitrogen fixation to the nutrient dynamics of the area. The concentrations were systematically higher, by up to 2.5 μM, in the Fall through the early Spring, during the northeast monsoon, than in the Summer, suggesting that the impact of nitrogen fixation was higher during …

Six species of phytoplankton, representing 6 major phylogenetic groups (2 oceanic species: a cyanobacteria, Synechococcus sp., and a coccolithophorid, Emiliania huxleyi; and 4 coastal species: a prasinophyte, Tetraselmis sp., the green algae Dunaliella tertiolecta, the diatom Skeletonema costatum and a dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae) were tested for their ability to reduce iodate to iodide in batch cultures. They all did so to varying degrees. Thus, the reduction of iodate to iodide by phytoplankton may be a general phenomenon in the marine environment.
