Mechanisms Counteracting Swelling In Brain Cells During Hyponatremia, Herminia Pasantes-Morales, Rodrigo Franco, Benito Ordaz, Lenin D. Ochoa

Water gain in the brain consequent to hyponatremia is counteracted by mechanisms that initially include a compensatory displacement of liquid from the interstitial space to cerebrospinal fluid and systemic circulation and subsequently an active reduction in cell water accomplished by extrusion of intracellular osmolytes to reach osmotic equilibrium. Potassium (K⁺), chloride (Cl^–), amino acids, polyalcohols, and methylamines all contribute to volume regulation, with a major contribution of ions at the early phase and of organic osmolytes at the late phase of the regulatory process. The specificity of the ATP:corrinoid adenosyltransferase

(CobA) enzyme of Salmonella enterica serovar

Typhimurium LT2 for its nucleotide substrate was

tested using ATP analogs and alternative nucleotide donors.

The enzyme showed broad specificity for the nucleotide

base and required the 2’-OH group of the ribosyl

moiety of ATP for activity. ³¹P NMR spectroscopy

was used to identify inorganic triphosphate (PPP_i) as

the byproduct of the reaction catalyzed by the CobA

enzyme. Cleavage of triphosphate into pyrophosphate

and orthophosphate did not occur, indicating that

triphosphate cleavage was not required for release of

the adenosylcorrinoid product. Triphosphate was …

Sclerotinia stem rot, caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, is a major soybean (Glycine max) disease in north-central regions of the United States and throughout the world. Current sources of resistance to Sclerotinia stem rot express partial resistance, and are limited in number within soybean germ plasm. A total of 6,520 maturity group (MG) 0 to IV plant introductions (PIs) were evaluated for Sclerotinia stem rot resistance in the United States and Canada in small plots or in the greenhouse from 1995 to 1997. Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a devastating disease that causes extensive yield and quality losses to wheat and barley. In durum wheat, the pathogen-produced toxin deoxynivalenol (DON) is retained in semolina at ~50%, and the causal agent of FHB, Gibberella zeae, has a strong adverse effect on pasta color. Two bacteria and two yeast strains with known efficacy against G. zeae on hexaploid wheats were produced in liquid culture and assayed on two cultivars of durum wheat in greenhouse bioassays. In light of the 6oth anniversary of Pearl Harbor and the   9-11 terrorist attacks, Americans are reflecting on the role of patriotism and the military. For many in the Boise State community, military service was a duty and the horrors of war remained with them for the rest of their lives. In far-flung locations, some with exotic and unpronounceable names, they earned a new appreciation for the rights and freedoms we so often take for anted. In this issue of FOCUS, we look at a few of their stories.

This Article considers the regulation of international trade in genetically modified agricultural products. Specifically, it addresses both products released into the environment as seeds and products intended for consumption as food. The first part of the Article describes the significance of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in modem agriculture, especially agriculture in the United States. This article described an innovative general education biology course for non-science majors, BIOL 102-Science of Heredity (SOH), stressing active student learning and collaboration [1]. The course has three components. The lecture is taught by J. P. Chinnici and several undergraduate "teacher apprentices"; students receive a classnotes packet, take in-class quizzes, and interact to work on genetic worksheets; incentives include reviewing books, visiting a science museum, and finding albino squirrels. Recitations are taught by graduate students in the Department of Human Genetics; student activities include preparing a family pedigree, writing a term paper, reporting orally and in writing on several media …

A chemistry course developed for non-science majors has been taught at Virginia Commonwealth University for the past five years. CHEM 112 uses current event articles from science magazines to make use of a verbal channel of learning in non-science majors, but some mathematics is necessary. Examples are given of successful presentation of nuclear chemistry and data needed for a balanced discussion of global warming. Manipulation of symbols in balancing chemical and nuclear reactions, simple algebra, and logarithms for pH and unit analysis of simple stoichiometric conversions are fundamental to basic chemistry. The sex slave trade has been in existence for at least two thousand years. This phenomenon derives from the brain mechanisms controlling the three primary brain circuits for human mating: lust, romantic attraction, and attachment. These brain mechanisms enable humans to control and direct their interest in sexual novelty: capable of both enabling and ending the predation which flourishes as the international sex slave trade.

A full account of the judicial influence on Social Security disability programs would require a book-length, perhaps even encyclopedia-length, treatise and would take us far afield from our present concern. This article focuses narrowly on the activities of Legal Services attorneys, mental health reformers, and children's advocates. Although mental health reformer groups are only one of many antipoverty organizations involved in advocacy efforts on behalf of the disabled poor, they have been among the most persistent, the most active, and the most successful in using a litigation strategy to achieve their larger policy goals. Foster parents in nontraditional foster care programs receive more extensive, ongoing training and support than foster parents in traditional foster care programs. This study examined whether differences exist in the levels of perceived parenting stress, satisfaction, and efficacy among traditional and nontraditional foster parents. Twenty-four foster parents completed the Parenting Stress Index (PSI) and the Parenting Sense of Competence scale (PSOC). Nontraditional foster parents reported higher levels of overall parenting stress and lower levels of foster parent role satisfaction than did traditional foster parents. However, response profiles indicated that nontraditional foster parents had children with more emotional and behavioral problems …

Despite evidence supporting epistemic style as an influential personality factor in a variety of behaviors, the relevance of epistemic style in coping behavior has yet to be explored. Using Royce's model of epistemic style (Royce & Powell, 1983) and Lazarus' relational model of coping (Lazarus, 1999), the purpose of this study was to investigate differences in coping behavior based on epistemic style. This study explores the psychometric qualities of the twenty-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) with a sample of 262 men who have battered their female partners and have attended a court recommended domestic violence program. Specifically, this study explores the three-factor structure, proposed by the authors of the TAS-20 (Bagby et al., 1993; Bagby, et al., 1994a), with a sample of domestic violence offenders. The study seeks to determine if the subscales of the TAS-20 demonstrate internal consistency and if the variables of age,Education, and income correlate with alexithymia scores. This study examined the impact of cognitive style preference, as defined by Dr. Michael Kirton's Adaption-Innovation (A-I) theory, on aviation flight instruction in the context of a higherEducation setting. The instrument associated with A-I theory measures an individual's cognitive style preference on a scale ranging from highly adaptive to highly innovative. The researcher surveyed 347 current students and alumni (and their respective flight instructors) of the Indiana State University Aerospace Technology department to include the instrument associated with A-I theory (The KAI).
