HIV and AIDS

While the integration of information, technologies, and services to respond to HIV/AIDS may seem closely related, there are a variety of issues that continue to create obstacles to integration. Among these are the stigmatizing nature of HIV infection and AIDS and discrimination faced by those who are infected or perceived to be infected; sexual practices and identities that remain socially unacceptable; gender roles and relations that make it difficult for women and men to access information, services, and technologies on HIV prevention; reluctance to recognize the special needs of young people; and barriers to service delivery created by broader economic, …

Allocating Health Care Resources To The Elderly, George P. Smith Ii Jan 2002

Allocating Health Care Resources To The Elderly, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

Health is not an absolute condition, but is assessed by reference to age and other factors. Therefore, a relative scale is necessary to determine whether an elderly person’s right to health care is being satisfied. Today, older Americans are increasingly affected by the growing need to regulate health care delivery. Since 1900, those over the age of 85 years have become twenty-one times as numerous in society, with an eightfold increase in the number of people over the age of 65. Given the need to curb rising health care costs — particularly the expenses related to caring for older individuals …

Land Policy And Adat Law In Indonesia's Forests, Kallie Szczepanski Jan 2002

Land Policy And Adat Law In Indonesia's Forests, Kallie Szczepanski

Washington International Law Journal

The Indonesian government's land laws and policies lead to displacement of and hardship for the indigenous peoples of the archipelago. The Basic Agrarian Law, Basic Forestry Law, and Spatial Planning Law all allow for expropriation of indigenous lands formerly governed under the adat legal system. In addition, the central government's policy of transmigration—the shifting of people from the populous Inner Islands of Java, Bali, and Madura to the Outer Islands—only increases the economic and cultural pressure on indigenous peoples of the Outer Islands. The hopelessness and anger that result from the marginalization of traditional adat societies fuel violent ethnic conflicts, …

The Sustainability Of Sustainable Consumption, Paddy Dolan Jan 2002

The Sustainability Of Sustainable Consumption, Paddy Dolan

Articles

This article examines the limitations of the concept of sustainable consumption in terms of the inadequate attention given to the social, cultural and historical contextualization of consumption. I argue that Macromarketing should adopt modes of inquiry that more fully engage with this contextualization. The implicit assumptions of ‘sustainable consumption’ center on the rational individual and his or her needs and wants, and neglect the significance of consumption practices as embodying the relations between individuals. Acts of consumption are not in opposition to, and prior to, macro structures and processes, they are macro processes at work. Consumer practices are cultural and …

Gaba B Receptors In The Ventral Tegmental Area Regulate Morphine-Induced Motor Sensitization And Accumbal Fos Expression In C57bl/6 Mice, Kimberly Anne Leite-Morris Jan 2002

Gaba B Receptors In The Ventral Tegmental Area Regulate Morphine-Induced Motor Sensitization And Accumbal Fos Expression In C57bl/6 Mice, Kimberly Anne Leite-Morris

Open Access Dissertations

Mesolimbic dopamine (A10) neurons have a central role in mediating opiate-induced motor sensitization and are implicated in drug addiction. This dissertation examines the hypotheses that GABAB receptors are located in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), that morphine sensitization occurs via A10 neuronal activation, and that GABAB receptor activation in the VTA inhibits the development and expression of morphine-induced sensitization. Dopaminergic neurons projecting from the VTA to the nucleus accumbens (NAc) of the forebrain are involved in mediating behavioral sensitization to morphine. GABA B receptor activation in the VTA leads to inhibition of dopaminergic transmission and inhibition of opiate actions. Sensitization …

An Orthodox Heresy: Scientific Rhetoric And The Science Of Prions., Carol Reeves Jan 2002

An Orthodox Heresy: Scientific Rhetoric And The Science Of Prions., Carol Reeves

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

A significant theoretical shift in the research community examining a class of terminal, infectious neurological disorders that includes Mad Cow Disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and Kuru was assisted by rhetorical production. The local rhetoric of one laboratory, that of Professor Stanley B. Prusiner, involved first situating an heretical hypothesis within the framework of the orthodox narrative and then audaciously promoting that heresy. Another aspect of rhetorical production in this case involved situating a new language associated with the heretical hypothesis. To promote their new lexicon, the Prusiner team evoked orthodox values of consistency, efficiency, and collective ratification. Eventually, what was once …

Rethinking Mechanistic Explanation, Stuart Glennan Jan 2002

Rethinking Mechanistic Explanation, Stuart Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Philosophers of science typically associate the causal-mechanical view of scientific explanation with the work of Railton and Salmon. In this paper I shall argue that the defects of this view arise from an inadequate analysis of the concept of mechanism. I contrast Salmon's account of mechanisms in terms of the causal nexus with my own account of mechanisms, in which mechanisms are viewed as complex systems. After describing these two concepts of mechanism, I show how the complex-systems approach avoids certain objections to Salmon's account of causal-mechanical explanation. I conclude by discussing how mechanistic explanations can provide understanding by unification.

Purification And Characterization Of Hemolymph Juvenile Hormone Esterase From The Cricket, Gryllus Assimilis, Anthony J. Zera, Travis Sanger, Jeremiah Hanes, Lawrence G. Harshman Jan 2002

Purification And Characterization Of Hemolymph Juvenile Hormone Esterase From The Cricket, Gryllus Assimilis, Anthony J. Zera, Travis Sanger, Jeremiah Hanes, Lawrence G. Harshman

Anthony Zera Publications

Juvenile hormone esterase (JHE) from the serum of the cricket, Gryllus assimilis, was purified to homogeneity in a four-step procedure involving polyethylene glycol precipitation, hydrophobic interaction FPLC, and ion exchange FPLC. This procedure could be completed in 4 days and resulted in a greater than 900-fold purification with greater than 30% recovery. The purified enzyme exhibited a single band on a silver-stained SDS PAGE gel and had an apparent subunit molecular mass of 52 kDa. The native subunit molecular mass, determined by gel permeation FPLC, was 98 kDa, indicating that JHE from Gryllus assimilis is a dimer of two …
