Sediment Denitrification In The Gulf Of Mexico Zone Of Hypoxia, C R. Childs, N N. Rabalais, R. Eugene Turner, L M. Proctor, C R. Childs

Faculty Publications

The largest zone of anthropogenic bottom water hypoxia in the Western Hemisphere occurs seasonally in the northern Gulf of Mexico between the Mississippi River delta and the coast of eastern Texas. This zone of hypoxia reaches its greatest extent in the summer months and is a consequence of seasonal stratification of the water column combined with the decomposition of organic matter derived from accelerated rates of primary production. This enhanced productivity is driven primarily by the input of inorganic nitrogen from the Mississippi River. There are 3 likely sinks for fixed nitrogen within this zone of hypoxia: sequestration in the …

Pre-Algebra And Algebra I Class Starters, Lois Martin Serns Jan 2002

Pre-Algebra And Algebra I Class Starters, Lois Martin Serns

Graduate Student Projects

Mathematics has always been important, but never more than today. Math curriculums have been revised throughout the United States to better prepare students for success. The math class of today must offer an environment in which students can work individually and in cooperative groups on meaningful, real-life problems. Teachers need to make the most of the class time they have. Using a math starter problem or activity can help achieve this goal. A wide variety of activities not only improve the quality of learning in the classroom, but will also capture the interest of the student in math class. These …

Impact Of Terrorism On Globalization And Vice-Versa, John F. Murphy

The International Lawyer

In his letter confirming my participation, Dean Attanasio stated, "This conference, entitled 'Terrorism's Burdens on Globalization,' posits that terrorism poses a systemic threat to globalization."1 I agree with this postulate, but would suggest that terrorism-especially the "catastrophic terrorism" that occurred on September 11, 2001-may so "concentrate the mind wonderfully" 2 that we will finally give the problem of terrorism the kind of attention it deserves3 as well as explore in greater depth the benefits and costs of globalization. The title of this article sets forth its basic theme: terrorism and globalization are locked in a symbiotic relationship. Globalization has contributed …

Writing An Important Body Of Scholarship: A Proposal For An Embodied Rhetoric Of Professional Practice, Jane Hindman Jan 2002

Writing An Important Body Of Scholarship: A Proposal For An Embodied Rhetoric Of Professional Practice, Jane Hindman

Publications and Research

Identifies a set of professional discursive practices of rhetoric teachers that reveal gendered power relations. Proposes an "embodied rhetoric" characterized and authorized in part by specific sorts of personal author- and context-saturated gestures. Concludes that an embodied rhetoric regenders academic discourse, assures agency and power to feminist theory and praxis, and facilitates efforts to effect change in teachers and students' lives.

Stimulation And Modeling Of Pond Formations On The Asteroid 433 Eros, Justin Thompson Jan 2002

Stimulation And Modeling Of Pond Formations On The Asteroid 433 Eros, Justin Thompson

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

"Ponds" are surface features that appear to be the result of the deposition of finer material on the asteroid's regolith, the layer of loose sediment that blankets the entire asteroid. Ponds were discovered by the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft in January, 2001, on the asteroid 433 Eros. The objective of experimentation is to simulate the development of these ponds in the Andromeda planetary sciences environmental chamber. The Andromeda Chamber offers a unique ability to simulate surface environments that occur on Eros. The chamber was used to simulate the processes that occur as Eros emits gas through its outer surface, including the …

Identification Of A Genetic Locus Involved In Ppgpp Metabolism In Escherichia Coli, Roxanne Enid Garza Jan 2002

Identification Of A Genetic Locus Involved In Ppgpp Metabolism In Escherichia Coli, Roxanne Enid Garza

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Two genes involved in the metabolism of ppGpp are relA and spoT . A relX mutant has altered ppGpp levels, so relX may be a regulator of the RelA or SpoT enzymes. The growth of the relX mutant has been reported to be both temperature and leucine sensitive. It was discovered in this work that this relX mutant is not temperature sensitive, however it is leucine sensitive. The original goal was to study effects of the relX gene on ppGpp metabolism. During the process of mapping the relX gene, it was discovered that the leucine sensitivity was caused by some …

Parenthood By Pure Intention: Assisted Reproduction And The Functional Approach To Parentage, Richard F. Storrow Jan 2002

Parenthood By Pure Intention: Assisted Reproduction And The Functional Approach To Parentage, Richard F. Storrow

UC Law Journal

This Article articulates a theoretical foundation for extending the privilege of intentional parenthood to all individuals, regardless of their marital status. Noting the failure of traditional methods of defining parentage to resolve the parentage issues arising from the use of assisted reproduction, this Article turns to recently enacted and proposed statutory provisions that clearly define intentional parenthood but reserve the status to married couples alone. Taking issue with the exclusionary criteria of these provisions, this Article aligns the emerging doctrine of functional parenthood with current theories in support of intentional parenthood to demonstrate that planning and preparing for the birth …

Nest-Site Characteristics Of Burrowing Owls (Athene Cunicularia) In The Snake River Birds Of Prey National Conservation Area, Idaho, And Application To Artificial Burrow Installation, James R. Belthoff, R. Andrew King Jan 2002

Nest-Site Characteristics Of Burrowing Owls (Athene Cunicularia) In The Snake River Birds Of Prey National Conservation Area, Idaho, And Application To Artificial Burrow Installation, James R. Belthoff, R. Andrew King

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) populations are declining in many portions of their range, and research and management efforts into stemming declines are underway. One tool with promise is the artificial burrow, which can supplement nesting opportunities and play a role in research, mitigation, translocation, and reintroduction studies. However, few studies directly assess important burrow and surrounding topographic features upon which owls choose sites and then construct and install artificial burrows accordingly. In this study we (1) measure physical, vegetative, and topographic characteristics of Burrowing Owl nest sites in the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area (SRBPNCA); …

The Precautionary Principle In The International Arena, Mary Stevens Jan 2002

The Precautionary Principle In The International Arena, Mary Stevens

Sustainable Development Law & Policy

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the precautionary principle in terms of its history, use, and application in several different international agreements. The precautionary principle is preventative in nature and stems from the idea that just because an activity cannot be proven unsafe does not mean that it does not have any negative effects. It has been heralded and criticized by scientists alike, and it has been applied in so many different ways that its definition depends on which international agreement one is reading.

Determination Of Alpha-I Antitrypsin Genetic Deficiency In Duodenal Ulcer By Polymerase Chain Reaction, A Shahid, H Qureshi, S J. Zuberi, Anwar Ali Siddiqui, T Sultana, M A. Waqar

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Objective: To confirm alpha-I-AT deficiency status in duodenal ulcer using a combination of PCR and restricted enzyme digestion.

Methods: Fifty patients with endoscopically proven duodenal ulcer and hundred controls with no signs of the disease were included. Alpha-i-AT phenotypes were confirmed by polymerase chain reaction followed by restriction enzyme digestion.

Results:Alpha-I-AT concentration in duodenal ulcer patients showed a mean value of 2.12 ± 0.11g/1 (range: 0.52-3.95 g/1, p

Conclusion: Alpha-1 AT deficiency was found in 10% of duodenal ulcer patients. DNA analysis more accurately resolved the phenotypes as S and Z mutations (JPMA 52:545; 2002).
