Biologists have made considerable progress in developing realistic simulation models to predict extinction risks for threatened species. Social scientists have to date had a more limited role in these efforts. This limited involvement comes despite the growing acknowledgment by population biologists and simulation modelers that this additional input is necessary for these models to accurately reflect the impact of humans and human-dominated landscapes on wildlife populations. We argue that collaborations among social and biological scientists can provide unparalleled opportunities to develop new conceptual and simulation tools for biodiversity risk assessment. One challenge is that while the value of interdisciplinary research …

Colby College Watershed Study: Webber Pond (2002)
The Colby Environmental Assessment Team (CEAT) investigated the water quality of Webber Pond in Vassalboro, Maine from June through December 2002. CEAT analyzed several factors that contribute to water quality, including physical and chemical measurements, land use patterns, and the impact of residential and commercial development. All of these measurements were compared and used to compute models, which enabled CEAT to discover the sources of pollution most threatening to the current and future water quality of Webber Pond. These data were also compared to those collected in previous years to gain a historical perspective. Water quality is affected by the …

Colby College Watershed Study: Webber Pond (2002)
The Webber Pond watershed was chosen as our study site. It is a characteristic New England lake located in Vassalboro, Maine. Webber Pond is a popular site for recreation and is home to a wide range of flora and fauna. Like all other lakes in Maine, it is a young lake. However, intensive human activity in the watershed contributes a substantial amount of nutrients and the lake has algal blooms anually in the summer months.
The purpose of this study was to asses the impact of land use and development on the water quality of Webber Pond. Physical and chemical …

Organic Wheat : A Production Guide, Steven Mccoy
Organic Wheat : A Production Guide, Steven Mccoy
Bulletins 4000 -
Many people believe that organic agriculture systems can only work in high rainfall regions. However, some of Australia’s most successful organic farmers are the experienced organic wheatbelt growers who produce cereal, pulse and oilseed crops in different regions and soil types across the country.
Wheat is the major organic cereal crop grown in Australia - predominantly noodle and breadmaking wheats for export markets.
Farming systems developed by modern organic wheat growers can differ significantly in concept, strategies and techniques from those used by conventional growers. Successful conversion to organic requires careful planning and integration of the whole farming system over …

A comprehensive evaluation of energy balance closure is performed across 22 sites and 50 site-years in FLUXNET, a network of eddy covariance sites measuring long-term carbon and energy fluxes in contrasting ecosystems and climates. Energy balance closure was evaluated by statistical regression of turbulent energy fluxes (sensible and latent heat (LE)) against available energy (net radiation, less the energy stored) and by solving for the energy balance ratio, the ratio of turbulent energy fluxes to available energy. These methods indicate a general lack of closure at most sites, with amean imbalance in the order of 20%. The imbalance was prevalent …

Vadose Zone Processes And Chemical Transport, H. M. Gaber, Steven Comfort, Patrick J. Shea, Thomas A. Machacek
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Permeable zerovalent iron (Fe0) barriers have become an estab- lished technology for remediating contaminated ground water. This same technology may be applicable for treating pesticides amenable to dehalogenation as they move downward in the vadose zone. By conducting miscible displacement experiments in the laboratory with metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl) acetamide; a chloroacetanilide herbicide] under unsaturated flow, we provide proof-of-concept for such an approach. Transport experiments were conducted in repacked, unsaturated soil columns attached to vacuum chambers and run under constant matrix potential (-30 kPa) and Darcy flux (approximately 2 cm d-1 ). Treatments included soil …

We monitored 38 juvenile Peregrine Falcons (Falco peregrinus) up to 3 mo immediately after their release from a hack box during 1999-2000. The restoration site was a cliff near Eagle Point Park in Dubuque, Iowa. Falcons were released in a staggered manner from mid-:June until late July each summer. Older falcons remained at the site longer than at previous urban releases and interacted with the younger falcons. The four mortalities (11 %) confirmed during the observation periods were discovered and reported by citizens near the release site. We used radiotelemetry, observations of colormarked birds at the hack site, …

Diel And Seasonal Habitat Use By Red Shiner (Cyprinella Lutrensis), Shyi-Liang Yu, Edward J. Peters
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Fish distribution and microhabitat use were quantified over a 24-h period 15 times from July 1988 to October 1990 at a site in the lower Platte River, Nebraska. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of availability on habitat use by the red shiner (Cyprinella lutrensis) and to describe variations in red shiner use of depth, velocity, cover, and substrate by seasonal and diel periods. Day-night collections showed a difference in selection or avoidance of depths and substrates in summer. Red shiners selected depths of less than 30 cm during the night and fine substrate during the …
Novel Algorithms For Remote Estimation Of Vegetation Fraction, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Yoram J. Kaufman, Robert Stark, Don Rundquist
Novel Algorithms For Remote Estimation Of Vegetation Fraction, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Yoram J. Kaufman, Robert Stark, Don Rundquist
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Spectral properties of a wheat canopy with vegetation fraction (VF) from 0% to 100% in visible and near-infrared (NIR) ranges of the spectrum were studied in order to devise a technique for remote estimation of VF. When VF was < 60%, from emergence till middle of the elongation stage, four distinct, and quite independent, spectral bands of reflectance existed in the visible range of the spectrum: 400 to 500 nm, 530 to 600 nm, near 670 nm, and around 700 nm. When VF was between 60% and 100%, reflectance in the NIR leveled off or even decreases with an increase of VF. The decreased reflectance in the NIR, occurring at or near the midseason, can be a limiting factor in the use of that spectral region for VF estimation. It was found that for VF > 60%, the information content of reflectance spectra in visible range can be expressed by only two independent pairs of spectral bands: (1) the blue from 400 to 500 nm and the red near 670 nm; (2) the green around 550 nm and the red edge region near 700 nm. We propose using only the visible range of the spectrum to quantitatively …

Biodiversity In And Around Mcelligot's Pool, Sandi Zellmer, Scott A. Johnson
Biodiversity In And Around Mcelligot's Pool, Sandi Zellmer, Scott A. Johnson
Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications
Through characters like farmer McElligot and the Lorax, who spoke out against the greedy Once-ler and his destructive clear-cutting practices, Theodor Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Suess, vividly depicted the plight of many private lands and waterways in the twentieth century. Although the message still resonates with children (and adults) today, the ecological health of private land has not improved a whole lot since Geisel wrote McElligot's Pool in 1947. Don't get me wrong, there have been immense gains in industrial pollution control and in habitat preservation on public lands. Yet there is still a long way to go, particularly on private …
