An Anatomical And Pathological Examination Of The First Recorded Stranding Of A Fraser's Dolphin (Lagenodelphis Hosei) In The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Lance S. Clark, Daniel F. Cowan, Graham A.J. Worthy, Elsa M. Haubold
Gulf of Mexico Science
Reports on Fraser's dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei) strandings in the Gulf of Mexico are uncommon. The only recorded strandings from the Gulf of Mexico, both of which occurred in Florida, consist of one mass stranding and a single stranding. This report represents the first record of a Fraser's dolphin stranding, dead or alive, in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico, Results presented here provide the first available data on blood hematology and chemistry values, detailed anatomy of internal organs and structures, thoracic and abdominal organ weights, blubber thickness, external morphometries, and pathological findings for this species in the western Gulf …

Gulf of Mexico Science
The distribution and abundance of Lytechinus variegatus (Lamarck) were determined at three shallow-water stations in Saint Andrew Bay, FL, in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Populations were monitored at 4-mo intervals from Aug. 1997 to Aug. 1999 along 2- X 10-m transects, with four transects at each station. In Aug. 1997 individuals ranged in size from 15- to 63-mm diameter (mean = 38 mm; density= 1.4 individuals (ind.) m-2) at Station 1 (Stations 2 and 3 were not sampled on that date). By Oct. 1997 individuals at Station 1 ranged in size from 26 to 62 mm (mean …

Gulf of Mexico Science
Feeding habits of dwarf goatfish on the continental shelf off Alvarado, Veracruz, Mexico, were analyzed to determine seasonal variation and size-class changes in diet composition and trophic overlap between size classes. Food was found in 63% of the 1,437 dwarf goatfish guts analyzed. The 52 dietary items identified consisted mainly of crustaceans, with Solenocera vioscai being the most important prey. Dwarf goatfish exhibited seasonal and size-class changes in prey consumption. Despite the high number of prey items, low values of diversity and diet breadth were found in the trophic spectrum. A high trophic overlap between size classes was observed in …

The Distribution Of Purse-Seine Sets And Catches In The Gulf Menhaden Fishery In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, 1994-98, Joseph W. Smith, Ethel A. Hall, Neil A. Mcneill, W. Bradley O'Bier
Gulf of Mexico Science
Captains Daily Fishing Reports (CDFRs) are daily logs of fishing activities that are completed by vessel captains in the gulf menhaden purse-seine fishery. CDFRs of menhaden vessels from Mississippi and Louisiana for 1994-98 were computerized and analyzed. Over the 5-yr study period, 33,780 CDFRs were processed, representing 115,104 purse-seine sets. On average, the fleet made 23,021 sets per year. Airplane pilots assisted for 64.0-75.8% of the sets. Modal number of sets per day ranged from 4 to 5, and median catch per set ranged from 17 to 22 metric tons. Vessels made at least one set on 63-76% of the …

Summer Movement Patterns Of Bottlenose Dolphins In A Texas Bay, Spencer K. Lynn, Bernd Würsig
Gulf of Mexico Science
Radiotracking of 10 bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), from 9 July 1992 to 13 Sep. 1992, was conducted in Matagorda Bay, Texas. The mean range size was 140 km2 (SD = 90.7). Males and females had similar range sizes, though males visited the extremities of their ranges more frequently. Several generalities were observed: (1) dolphins were capable of traversing their range in several hours; (2) dolphins traveled widely on some days, whereas on other days, movement was very confined, within 1-2 km2; (3) dolphins tended to spend about 1-4 d in a particular portion of their …

The Gulf Surgeon, Acanthurus Randalli, A Junior Synonym Of The Ocean Surgeon, Acanthurus Bahianus (Teleostei: Acanthuridae), William F. Smith-Vaniz, Howard L. Jelks, John E. Randall
Gulf of Mexico Science
We compared 62 specimens, 48-126.5 mm standard length, of Acanthurus bahianus from the northeastern Gulf of Mexico with 95 specimens from other localities to determine if the distinguishing characters in the original description of the Gulf of Mexico endemic surgeonfish Acanthurus randalli were valid. No color pattern or meristic differences were found, and the only measurement that allowed distinction (91% percent concordance) was the shallower caudal concavity of northeastern Gulf of Mexico specimens. Acanthurus chirurgus from the northeastern Gulf of Mexico also have shallower caudal concavities (93.7% percent concordance) than do conspecifics from other areas, suggesting that this trend may …
An Analysis Of Cheliped Asymmetry In Three Species Of Fiddler Crabs, George A. Croll, James B. Mcclintock
An Analysis Of Cheliped Asymmetry In Three Species Of Fiddler Crabs, George A. Croll, James B. Mcclintock
Gulf of Mexico Science
Left-right cheliped asymmetry occurs in a variety of decapod species, Such asymmetries can be present in early development or can arise during sexual differentiation. Male fiddler crabs have a dimorphic enlargement of one of the two chelipeds. This major cheliped has been associated with male reproductive success as a result of female selection or advantage in male-male combat. Because the major cheliped occurs on either the right or the left side, selection pressure could produce populations with right or left cheliped dominance. To ascertain whether populations of dominantly enlarged right- or left-clawed males are present, three fiddler crab species, Uca …

A Comparison Of Paralichthid Flounder Size-Structure In Northwest Florida Based On Trammel Net Catches Adjusted For Mesh Selectivity And Collection By Scuba Divers, G.R. Fitzhugh, W.L. Trent, W.A. Fable Jr., E. Cortes
Gulf of Mexico Science
By applying a selectivity model for trammel net catches of Gulf flounder, we found that the resulting adjusted length distribution was similar to the offshore diver-sampled length distribution. We found two dominant size modes that seem to be consistent inshore and offshore, a lower mode composed of males and females and an upper mode composed exclusively of females. Southern flounder demonstrated a lower mode of males and small females but also showed larger females and possibly multiple-size modes after trammel net captures were adjusted for size selectivity. The two species showed very similar values for 91 (91 = 76.2-79.2), a …

Patterns Of Social Affiliation And Group Composition For Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) In San Luis Pass, Texas, Katherine Maze-Foley, Bernd Würsig
Gulf of Mexico Science
Group sizes, group composition, and association patterns of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) were investigated in the San Luis Pass area (Sep. 1995- Aug. 1996) of the Galveston Bay Estuary to examine differences in community structure of individuals inhabiting different portions of the estuary. Group sizes (n = 83) ranged from 1 to 29 (x̄ = 10.6) and were seasonally variable, with the largest groups occurring in spring (x̄ = 16.3) and the smallest groups during the fall (x̄ = 6.3). Seventy-one individuals were identified using photoidentification, and the sex of six dolphins (three males, three females) was determined. …

Assessment Of Seagrass Plant Demography Within And Among Beds Of Turtle Grass (Thalassia Testudinum), Manatee Grass (Syringodium Filiforme), And Shoal Grass (Halodule Wrightii) From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Paul A.X. Bologna, Doug Haywick
Gulf of Mexico Science
Variability in the demographic patterns of seagrasses may affect a variety of physical and biological processes in aquatic communities. We investigated seasonal seagrass demography, sediment size structure, and sediment organic carbon from two sites (north and south) in St. Joseph Bay, Florida, for Thalassia testudinum, Syringodium filiforme, and Halodule wrightii. Geologically, sands dominated both sites, but the south site had significantly greater proportions of fine and very fine sands, whereas the north site was dominated by coarse and medium sands. Within each site, demographic parameters were assessed for edge (<1 m) and interior portions (>10 m) of grass beds. The objective …1>

The central question we were asked to address in the Michigan Journal of International Law's Symposium, "Dueling Fates," was, "Which international legal approach more effectively protects women's rights, the collective or the individual?" I am a political sociologist, without legal training, although I have been publishing in the field of international human rights (including women's rights) since 1980. This Article will focus on some underlying assumptions about the nature of society, and women's roles in it, that are pertinent to this central question.
The position argued in this Article is that women's rights are individual rights. To explain this position, …

Holistic Approach To Mental Illnesses At The Toby Of Ambohibao Madagascar, Daniel A. Rakotojoelinandrasana
Doctor of Ministry Theses
The Church is to reclaim its teaching and praxis of the healing ministry at the example of Jesus Christ who preached, taught and healed. Healing is holistic, that is, caring for the whole person, physical, mental, social and spiritual. Healing is a part of the full salvation in Jesus Christ.
Mental illnesses or disorders affect one fourth of human beings in the world and their prevalence is far from declining. This thesis describes the model of Ambohibao and suggests it as a way for the church to do healing ministry, and particularly, as a way to approach the problems of …

Valuing Man's And Woman's Best Friend: The Moral And Legal Status Of Companion Animals, Rebecca J. Huss
Law Faculty Publications
This article first provides an overview of the philosophicla basis of the allocation (or non-allocation) of moral status to nonhuman animals considering historical and modern views of animals. Second, it analyzes the legal status of animals under the current system and discusses the idea of extending legal personhood to such animals. Next it considers the common law and statutory basis for the current valuation of companion animals. Finally, this article supports and promotes the idea that there is a rational basis for changing the way that companion animals should be valued by the legal system and recommends the adoption of …

6-Fluoro-8-quinolinol was prepared from 2-amino-5-fluorophenol by a Skraup synthesis. No synergism was observed between 5-fluoro- and 6-fluoro-8-quinolinols or between 6-fluoro-8-quinolinolsuoro- and 7-fluoro-8-quinolinols against any of the six fungi in our test system (Aspergillus niger, A. oryzae, Myrothecium verrucaria, Trichoderma viride, Mucor cirinelloides, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes) in Sabouraud dextrose broth. Unlike the fluoro-8-quinolinols, the 8-quinolinols comparably substituted with chlorine or bromine did form synergistic mixtures. This is attributed to steric factors
