Mechanisms Of Calcium Wave Initiation And Propagation In Astrocytes, Charles Emmet Stout Mar 2002

Mechanisms Of Calcium Wave Initiation And Propagation In Astrocytes, Charles Emmet Stout

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Glial cells display propagated waves of cytoplasmic calcium (Ca2+) mobilization that spread outward from an initiating cell to involve hundreds to thousands of surrounding cells. This intercellular communication system is thought to initiate and coordinate Ca2+ dependent processes associated with vascular control, gut motility, uterine contraction, and synaptic plasticity. Not surprisingly, aberrant Ca signaling is thought to play a featured role in the pathophysiologies associated with dysfunction of these processes. This suggests that elucidation of the mechanism of Ca2+ waves will lead to rational therapeutic modalities for a variety of clinically significant entities.

Night Moves: A Qualitative Investigation Of Street-Level Sex Work, Rochelle L. Dalla Mar 2002

Night Moves: A Qualitative Investigation Of Street-Level Sex Work, Rochelle L. Dalla

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The subculture of street-level sex work including the social environment, drug use and abuse, and violence was examined. Personal interviews were conducted with 43 women involved in streetwalking prostitution. Data were analyzed using Phenomenological Descriptive Analysis (Colaizzi, 1978). Several participants reported developing emotional relationships and having children with clients, former clients, or pimps; some participants were married to men who pimped them. Supportive relationships with other streetwalkers were largely nonexistent; streetwalking constitutes a solitary business for most. The majority reported drug addiction, although less than half entered prostitution to support an already established drug habit. Financial need propelled many into …

Plate Vibration Under Irregular Internal Supports, Yibao Zhao, G. W. Wei, Y. Xiang Mar 2002

Plate Vibration Under Irregular Internal Supports, Yibao Zhao, G. W. Wei, Y. Xiang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper studies the problem of plate vibration under complex and irregular internal support conditions. Such a problem has its widely spread industrial applications and has not been addressed in the literature yet, partially due to the numerical difficulties. A novel computational method, discrete singular convolution (DSC), is introduced for solving this problem. The DSC algorithm exhibits controllable accuracy for approximations and shows excellent flexibility in handling complex geometries, boundary conditions and internal support conditions. Convergence and comparison studies are carried out to check the validity and accuracy of the DSC method. Case studies are considered to the combination of …

Law On The Rocks: The Intoxication Defenses Are Being Eighty-Sixed, Meghan P. Ingle Mar 2002

Law On The Rocks: The Intoxication Defenses Are Being Eighty-Sixed, Meghan P. Ingle

Vanderbilt Law Review

The ever-controversial voluntary intoxication defense faces possible elimination by statutory abrogation. Originally developed by nineteenth-century common law courts, the defense recognizes that an intoxicated defendant may be incapable of possessing the mens rea specified by an offense. Increasingly criticized in recent years, the defense received a substantial blow to its continued vitality in the 1996 Supreme Court decision Montana v. Egelhoff. In a sharply divided opinion," a plurality of the Court held that a defendant does not possess a constitutional right to present evidence of voluntary intoxication in his defense. The Egelhoff decision has caused much commentary, both positive and …

The Determination Of The Best Modified Way And Microscopical Analysis For Enzyme/Immunoelectrodes, Sa-Ying Dong, Hong-Ren Wang, Yu-Zhu Gao, Guang-Zhang Chen, Ming-Xiang Lv, Bo-Yi Tian

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this paper, the electrochemical response characteristics of enzyme and immuno electrodes were studied by cyclic voltammetry under different conditions. Our goals were to determine the best modified way of bioelectrode, which was the base of biosensor's application. 30U GOD and 0.8 mg/mL SEC1 antibody were suitable to bioelectrode preparation and detection. The microscopical analysis was finished with scan microscopy.
