Transition To Chaos In Continuous-Time Random Dynamical Systems, Zonghua Liu, Ying-Cheng Lai, Lora Billings, Ira B. Schwartz Mar 2002

Transition To Chaos In Continuous-Time Random Dynamical Systems, Zonghua Liu, Ying-Cheng Lai, Lora Billings, Ira B. Schwartz

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We consider situations where, in a continuous-time dynamical system, a nonchaotic attractor coexists with a nonattracting chaotic saddle, as in a periodic window. Under the influence of noise, chaos can arise. We investigate the fundamental dynamical mechanism responsible for the transition and obtain a general scaling law for the largest Lyapunov exponent. A striking finding is that the topology of the flow is fundamentally disturbed after the onset of noisy chaos, and we point out that such a disturbance is due to changes in the number of unstable eigendirections along a continuous trajectory under the influence of noise.

Small Security: Nanotechnology And Future Defense, John L. Petersen, Dennis M. Egan Mar 2002

Small Security: Nanotechnology And Future Defense, John L. Petersen, Dennis M. Egan

Defense Horizons

Scientists believe that nanotechnology will soon give humans the ability to move and combine individual atoms and molecules into microscopically tiny mechanical, electrical, and biological “machines” that will replace many of today’s production processes and tools. Although current work is focused on materials, optics, and electronics, nanotechnology eventually will find applications throughout society. Advances in nanotechnology will feed back into conventional industry, which in turn will demand and promote further advances in nanotechnology in a cycle that is familiar from the silicon revolution of recent decades. This time, however, the cycle will operate more rapidly and produce even more far-reaching …

Mammalian Selenoprotein In Which Selenocysteine (Sec) Incorporation Is Supported By A New Form Of Sec Insertion Sequence Element, Konstantin V. Korotkov, Sergey V. Novoselov, Dolph L. Hatfield, Vadim Gladyshev Mar 2002

Mammalian Selenoprotein In Which Selenocysteine (Sec) Incorporation Is Supported By A New Form Of Sec Insertion Sequence Element, Konstantin V. Korotkov, Sergey V. Novoselov, Dolph L. Hatfield, Vadim Gladyshev

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Selenocysteine (Sec), the 21st amino acid in protein, is encoded by UGA. The Sec insertion sequence (SECIS) element, which is the stem-loop structure present in 3’ untranslated regions (UTRs) of eukaryotic selenoprotein- encoding genes, is essential for recognition of UGA as a codon for Sec rather than as a stop signal. We now report the identification of a new eukaryotic selenoprotein, designated selenoprotein M (SelM). The 3-kb human SelM-encoding gene has five exons and is located on chromosome 22 but has not been correctly identified by either Celera or the public Human Genome Project. We characterized human and mouse SelM …

Migrations Of The Imagination: Photographs By Michael Forsberg, Drawings, Sculptures And Quotations By Paul A. Johnsgard, And Additional Works Of Art, Paul A. Johnsgard, Michael Forsberg

Papers in Ornithology

Migrations of the imagination are those images, sounds, smells, and tastes that transport one to another time and place, possibly as close as Nine- Mile Prairie near Lincoln, or perhaps as far away as the Canadian high arctic, and to times that may be decades or centuries removed from one's personal life and experiences. They hold us in their thrall, expanding our vision, and touching our lives in special ways. They help retrieve our own memories or perhaps stir us to make new ones that will live with us for a lifetime.

The migratory images here are those of nature, …

Thermodynamics And Bioenergetics, Yaşar Demirel, Stanley I. Sandler Mar 2002

Thermodynamics And Bioenergetics, Yaşar Demirel, Stanley I. Sandler

Papers in Thermal Mechanics

Bioenergetics is concerned with the energy conservation and conversion processes in a living cell, particularly in the inner membrane of the mitochondrion. This review summarizes the role of thermodynamics in understanding the coupling between the chemical reactions and the transport of substances in bioenergetics. Thermodynamics has the advantages of identifying possible pathways, providing a measure of the efficiency of energy conversion, and of the coupling between various processes without requiring a detailed knowledge of the underlying mechanisms. In the last five decades, various new approaches in thermodynamics, non-equilibrium thermodynamics and network thermodynamics have been developed to understand the transport and …

Transport Of Space Environment Electrons: A Simplified Rapid-Analysis Computational Procedure, John E. Nealy, Brooke M. Anderson, Francis Cucinotta, John W. Wilson, Robert Katz, C. K. Chang Mar 2002

Transport Of Space Environment Electrons: A Simplified Rapid-Analysis Computational Procedure, John E. Nealy, Brooke M. Anderson, Francis Cucinotta, John W. Wilson, Robert Katz, C. K. Chang

Robert Katz Publications

A computational procedure for describing transport of electrons in condensed media has been formulated for application to effects and exposures from spectral distributions typical of electrons trapped in planetary magnetic fields. The procedure is based on earlier parameterizations established from numerous electron beam experiments. New parameterizations have been derived that logically extend the domain of application to low molecular weight (high hydrogen content) materials and higher energies (~50 MeV). The production and transport of high energy photons (bremsstrahlung) generated in the electron transport processes have also been modeled using tabulated values of photon production cross sections. A primary purpose for …

An Anion Characterization Of A Constructed Wetland Used For Chlorinated Ethene Remediation, Bradley M. Bugg Mar 2002

An Anion Characterization Of A Constructed Wetland Used For Chlorinated Ethene Remediation, Bradley M. Bugg

Theses and Dissertations

Chlorinated ethenes physical properties as well as its ubiquitous state at DOD installations makes it a priority for innovative remediation efforts. Current techniques are expensive and time consuming to maintain. Constructed wetlands suggest an inexpensive and operational alternative to conventional technologies. Sub-surface flow wetlands provide the anaerobic zones necessary to reduce the recalcitrant chlorinated solvents prior to anaerobic or aerobic mineralization of its daughter products. A vertical flow cell to include sequential sedimentary layers of two hydric soil lifts and a mix of hydric soil and woody compost was the subject of this investigation. This study focused on the statistical …

Smooth Muscle Myosin Heavy Chain Isoform Distribution In The Swine Stomach, Jonathan A. Parisi, Thomas J. Eddinger Mar 2002

Smooth Muscle Myosin Heavy Chain Isoform Distribution In The Swine Stomach, Jonathan A. Parisi, Thomas J. Eddinger

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

To evaluate the distribution of smooth muscle myosin heavy chain isoforms (SMB, with head insert), we examined frozen sections from the various regions of swine stomachs using isoform-specific antibodies. We previously reported variable SMB myosin heavy chain (MHC) expression in stomach cells that correlates with unloaded shortening velocities. This is consistent with the generalization of tonic fundic muscle having low expression and phasic antral muscle having high expression of the SMB MHC isoform. Using immunohistochemistry (IHC), we show a progression of the SMB MHC from very low immunoreactivity in the fundus to very intense immunoreactivity in the antrum. In the …

An Analysis Of Horizontal Flow Treatment Well Applicability For The Treatment Of Chlorinated Solvent Contaminated Groundwater At United States Forces Korea Installations, Michael R. Staples Mar 2002

An Analysis Of Horizontal Flow Treatment Well Applicability For The Treatment Of Chlorinated Solvent Contaminated Groundwater At United States Forces Korea Installations, Michael R. Staples

Theses and Dissertations

Past research has shown that there is a rising public concern with environmental issues in the Republic of Korea (ROK). As Korean government and public interest in the environment grow, there is likely to be increased pressure to remediate environmental contamination at United States Department of Defense (DoD) installations in Korea. Impacting DoD's ability to remediate contaminated sites overseas is the fact that limited environmental funds must compete with high priority mission requirements. Thus, particularly at overseas bases, there is an urgent need for inexpensive and effective groundwater remediation technologies. Horizontal Flow Treatment Well (HFTW) systems have been demonstrated in …

Effect Of Normalization And Phase Angle Calculations On Continuous Relative Phase, Max J. Kurza, Nikolaos Stergiou Mar 2002

Effect Of Normalization And Phase Angle Calculations On Continuous Relative Phase, Max J. Kurza, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if phase plot normalization and phase angle definitions would have an affect on continuous relative phase calculations. A subject ran on a treadmill while sagittal plane kinematic data were collected with a high speed (180Hz) camera. Segmental angular displacements and velocities were used to create phase plots, and examine the coordination between the leg and thigh. Continuous relative phase was calculated with a combination of two different amplitude normalization techniques, and two different phase angle definitions. Differences between the techniques were noted with a root mean square (RMS) calculation. RMS values indicated …

Envisioning A Healthy Future: A Re-Becoming Of Native American Men, Paul Rock Krech Mar 2002

Envisioning A Healthy Future: A Re-Becoming Of Native American Men, Paul Rock Krech

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Native American men have historically been important to their communities, each having a specific function in the perpetuation of cultural norms and practices. Oral tradition and communal experiential activity were pathways of maintaining a connection with others and in regenerating culture. In contrast, the modern dominant culture values and emphasizes individuation as an indicator of psychosocial growth. This influence seems to have hindered Indigenous people/men in maintaining a sense of connection with the community. Survival for Indigenous men during the establishment of encroaching nations has often occurred through relinquishment of a part of 'self' psychically. Aboriginal men report experiencing hopelessness …

Understanding Of Emotions And Emotion Regulation In Adolescent Females With Conduct Problems: A Qualitative Analysis, Lynne M. Kostiuk, Gregory T. Fouts Mar 2002

Understanding Of Emotions And Emotion Regulation In Adolescent Females With Conduct Problems: A Qualitative Analysis, Lynne M. Kostiuk, Gregory T. Fouts

The Qualitative Report

Adolescent girls with conduct problems were interviewed regarding their (a) understanding of positive and negative emotions, (b) parental context of experiencing emotions, (c) ways of regulating emotions, (d) success in emotion regulation, and (e) use of alternative strategies in dealing with emotions. It was found that the girls have relatively little understanding of their negative internal states and/or are unable to express them to others, especially to fathers. They have few successful strategies for regulating negative emotions in themselves and others and are unaware of alternative strategies. This dysregulatory pattern likely prevents them from learning more appropriate ways of expressing …

"Do You Have Any Books On..." An Examination Of Public Library Holdings, Cynthia Bassett, John M. Budd

Faculty Publications

Public librarians have long debated the question of whether quality or popularity should drive collection decisions. A survey of the selected holdings of twenty medium-sized public libraries indicates that both quality and popularity may be determining factors in whether to acquire particular titles. Furthermore, the study suggests that the existence and content of reviews may also influence the likelihood of libraries to select particular titles, as may the selectors' perception of the diversity of their community.

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The global challenge of meeting increased food demand and protecting environmental quality will be won or lost in cropping systems that produce maize, rice, and wheat. Achieving synchrony between N supply and crop demand without excess or deficiency is the key to optimizing trade-offs amongst yield, profit, and environmental protection in both large-scale systems in developed countries and small-scale systems in developing countries. Setting the research agenda and developing effective policies to meet this challenge requires quantitative understanding of current levels of N-use efficiency and losses in these systems, the biophysical controls on these factors, and the economic returns from …

Modeling The Galactic Center Nonthermal Filaments As Magnetized Wakes, Russell B. Dahlburg, Giorgio Einaudi, Ted N. La Rosa, Steven N. Shore Mar 2002

Modeling The Galactic Center Nonthermal Filaments As Magnetized Wakes, Russell B. Dahlburg, Giorgio Einaudi, Ted N. La Rosa, Steven N. Shore

Faculty Articles

We simulate the Galactic center nonthermal laments as magnetized wakes formed dynamically from amplification of a weak ( tens of l G) global magnetic field through the interaction of molecular clouds with a Galactic center wind. One of the key issues in this cometary model is the stability of the lament against dynamical disruption. Here we show two-dimensional MHD simulations for interstellar conditions that are appropriate for the Galactic center. The structures eventually disrupt through a shear-driven nonlinear instability but maintain coherence for lengths up to 100 times their width as observed. The final instability, which destroys the lament through …
