Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Study Design. The sheep anterior lumbar spinal fusion model was used to study the efficacy of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2)–collagen composite in comparison with autograft to enhance spinal interbody fusion. Comparisons were drawn from temporal radiographic and end-point biomechanical and histologic data.
Objective. To analyze histologically the ability of rhBMP-2 to achieve complete arthrodesis between vertebral bodies.
Summary of Background Data. Studies using rhBMP for enhancement of anterior interbody fusion have used numerous endpoints. However, systematic histologic evaluation of the fusion has not been conducted.
Methods. Twelve sheep underwent single-level anterior lumbar interbody fusion performed with a cylindrical …

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications
Pseudomonas syringae uses a type III protein secretion system encoded by the Hrp pathogenicity island (Pai) to translocate effector proteins into plant cells. One of these effector proteins is HopPsyA. A small open reading frame (ORF), named shcA, precedes the hopPsyA gene in the Hrp Pai of P. s. syringae 61. The predicted amino acid sequence of shcA shares general characteristics with chaperones used in type III protein secretion systems of animal pathogens. A functionally non-polar deletion of shcA in P. s. syringae 61 resulted in the loss of detectable HopPsyA in supernatant fractions, consistent with ShcA acting as a …

John C. Briggs earned his Ph.D. in biology and natural science from Stanford University in 1952. For many years, he taught at the Department of Marine Science (now College of Marine Science) located on the physical campus of USF St. Petersburg. After entering phased retirement in the 1980s, he negotiated a purchase/partial donation of his extensive collection of works on ichthyology, natural science, botany, and biology to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library. The Briggs Collection offers a valuable research tool due to the breadth of the collection and its many unique and rare titles. Nearly all monographs are searchable through …

Emergence Of A New Cucurbit-Infecting Begomovirus Species Capable Of Forming Viable Reassortants With Related Viruses In The Squash Leaf Curl Virus Cluster, J. K. Brown, A. M. Idris, C. Alteri, Drake C. Stenger
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Cucurbit leaf curl virus (CuLCV), a whitefly-transmitted geminivirus previously partially characterized from the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, was identified as a distinct bipartite begomovirus species. This virus has near sequence identity with the previously partially characterized Cucurbit leaf crumple virus from California. Experimental and natural host range studies indicated that CuLCV has a relatively broad host range within the family Cucurbitaceae and also infects bean and tobacco. The genome of an Arizona isolate, designated CuLCV-AZ, was cloned and completely sequenced. Cloned CuLCV-AZ DNA A and B components were infectious by biolistic inoculation to pumpkin and progeny virus was …
