Content Validity And Internal Consistency Reliability Of A New Scale On Violence Potential, Samuel Pierce Mar 2002

Content Validity And Internal Consistency Reliability Of A New Scale On Violence Potential, Samuel Pierce

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The differential prediction of violence potential in adolescents m juvenile corrections and the mental health fields continues to garner concern. The result of this inability to predict ;md therefore prevent these aces of violence has resulted in an increased incarceration of adolescents in the criminal justice system. Two previous studies (Criminal Justice Association, 1993; Dembo. Hughes, Jackson & Mieczkowski, 1993) have noted similar results. While no system is 100% accurate. there arc known risk factors of violent behavior (Flannery. 1998: Monahan. 1981: Webster & fackson. 1997). This study examined many of these known indicators of violent behavior: and, identified other …

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery 2002 Annual Report Mar 2002

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery 2002 Annual Report

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery: Annual Reports

Wolves (Canis lupus) in the Northern Rocky Mountain states (Idaho, Montana and Wyoming) continue to increase in distribution and numbers (Figures 1, 5). Estimates of wolf numbers at the end of 2002 were 284 wolves in the Central Idaho Recovery Area, 271 in the Greater Yellowstone Recovery Area, and 108 in the Northwest Montana Recovery Area for a total of 663 (Figure 1, Table 4a). By state boundaries, there were an estimated 263 wolves in the state of Idaho, 217 in Wyoming and 183 in Montana (Table 4b). Of approximately 80 groups of two or more wolves, 43 …

Fluorescent Probes For Monitoring Virus Fusion Kinetics: Comparative Evaluation Of Reliability, Isabel Nunes-Correia, Ana Eulálio, Shlomo Nir, Nejat Düzgüneş, João Ramalho-Santos, Maria C. Pedroso De Lima

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Fluorescence assays for viral membrane fusion employ lipidic probes whose kinetics of fluorescence dequenching should mimic the actual kinetics of membrane merging. We examined the fusion of influenza virus with CEM cells, erythrocyte ghosts or liposomes by monitoring the fluorescence dequenching of each one of the three probes, octadecylrhodamine B chloride (R18), N-(lissamine rhodamine B sulfonyl)phosphatidylethanolamine (Rh-PE), or rac-2,3-dioleoylglycerol ester of rhodamine B (DORh-B), inserted into the virus membrane. Experimental conditions were designed to allow a clear distinction between membrane mixing and non-specific probe transfer. Fluorescence dequenching observed with Rh-PE was much slower than with R18, unless a particular experimental …

Ube1l Is A Retinoid Target That Triggers Pml/Rarα Degradation And Apoptosis In Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia, Sutisak Kitareewan, Ian Pitha-Rowe, David Sekula, Christopher H. Lowrey, Michael J. Nemeth, Todd R. Golub, Sarah J. Freemantle, Ethan Dmitrovsky

Dartmouth Scholarship

All-trans-retinoic acid (RA) treatment induces remissions in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) cases expressing the t(15;17) product, promyelocytic leukemia (PML)/RA receptor α (RARα). Microarray analyses previously revealed induction of UBE1L (ubiquitin-activating enzyme E1-like) after RA treatment of NB4 APL cells. We report here that this occurs within 3 h in RA-sensitive but not RA-resistant APL cells, implicating UBE1L as a direct retinoid target. A 1.3-kb fragment of the UBE1L promoter was capable of mediating transcriptional response to RA in a retinoid receptor-selective manner. PML/RARα, a repressor of RA target genes, abolished this UBE1L promoter activity. A hallmark of …

Rape Myths Among A Sample Of Utc Students, Nicolette Mendenhall Mar 2002

Rape Myths Among A Sample Of Utc Students, Nicolette Mendenhall

Honors Theses

Rape has a tremendous impact upon victims. The victim has to come to terms with the reality that she was raped,as well as face the new perceptions that other people will have about her. These perceptions will be a result of conceptions about rape that are not realistic. These unrealistic beliefs are called 'rape myths.' There has been much research on rape myths for the following reasons: they may upset the victim, they provide justification for rapists to rape someone, and they may affect a woman's behavior because she may avoid activities she believes will lead her to be raped. …

Enrichments And Isolations Of Mesophilic And Thermophilic Iron-Reducing Microbes From Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vents And The Deep Subsurface, Melissa Mary Kendall Mar 2002

Enrichments And Isolations Of Mesophilic And Thermophilic Iron-Reducing Microbes From Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vents And The Deep Subsurface, Melissa Mary Kendall

Dissertations and Theses

Microbes inhabiting the deep subsurface play an important role in geochemical processes and may be of practical value in bioremediation and biotechnology. Hydrothermal vents and the deep gold mines of South Africa have be likened to "windows" into the subsurface biosphere. The aim of this research was to isolate and characterize microbes involved in iron-cycling from deep-sea hydrothermal vents and from the deep gold mines of the Witwatersrand Basin. Three mesophilic bacteria, strains BB4, W3, and A6 were isolated from sulfide chimneys at 13°N and a thermophilic bacterium, strain GB21 was isolated from Guaymas Basin on the East Pacific Rise. …

Compositional Analysis Of Homogeneous Regions In Human Genomic Dna, Eric C. Rouchka, David J. States Mar 2002

Compositional Analysis Of Homogeneous Regions In Human Genomic Dna, Eric C. Rouchka, David J. States

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Due to increased production of human DNA sequence, it is now possible to explore and understand human genomic organization at the sequence level. In particular, we have studied one of the major organizational components of vertebrate genome organization previously described as isochores (Bernardi, 1993), which are compositionally homogeneous DNA segments based on G+C content. We have examined sequence data for the existence of compositionally differing regions and report that while compositionally homogeneous regions are present in the human genome, current isochore classification schemes are too brad for sequence-level data.
