Type 4 Pilus Biogenesis And Type Ii-Mediated Protein Secretion By Vibrio Cholerae Occur Independently Of The Tonb-Facilitated Proton Motive Force, Niranjan Bose, Shelley M. Payne, Ronald K. Taylor Apr 2002

Type 4 Pilus Biogenesis And Type Ii-Mediated Protein Secretion By Vibrio Cholerae Occur Independently Of The Tonb-Facilitated Proton Motive Force, Niranjan Bose, Shelley M. Payne, Ronald K. Taylor

Dartmouth Scholarship

In Vibrio cholerae, elaboration of toxin-coregulated pilus and protein secretion by the extracellular protein secretion apparatus occurred in the absence of both TonB systems. In contrast, the cognate putative ATPases were required for each process and could not substitute for each other.

Habeas Review Of Perfunctory State Court Decisions On The Merits, Scott Dodson Apr 2002

Habeas Review Of Perfunctory State Court Decisions On The Merits, Scott Dodson

Faculty Publications

This article discusses the appropriate standard of review a federal habeas court should use to review a state-court determination of federal law unaccompanied by a federally-based rationale. In other words, what standard of review does the federal court employ when the state court’s opinion is wholly composed of the phrases: “The claims are without merit. Denied.”? The Supreme Court has not explicitly resolved the issue, and various federal judges around the country have reached different opinions. This article argues that a close scrutiny of the controlling habeas corpus statute, relevant case law, and policy considerations leads to the conclusion that …

Family Privacy And The Custody And Visitation Rights Of Adult Outsiders, John De Witt Gregory Apr 2002

Family Privacy And The Custody And Visitation Rights Of Adult Outsiders, John De Witt Gregory

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The subject of this symposium, custody law and practice, could not be more appropriate in light of Professor Robert J. Levy's grand contributions to the field as both a scholar and a lawyer. I first met Bob Levy some thirty years ago when I attended a three-week teaching conference sponsored by the Association of American Law Students, at which Professor Levy was a faculty member. During the ensuing three decades or so, he has been a generous, kind, and nurturing mentor for me. If a law professor can have a guru, then Bob Levy is certainly mine. More importantly, his …

Herbicide Evaluation In Arkansas Rice 2000, Ron Talbert, Ford Baldwin, Ken Smith, David Gealy, Eric Scherder, Mike Lovelace, Nathan Buehring, Marilyn Mcclelland

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series

With the widespread development of resistance to propanil by barnyardgrass, the major weed in rice, research has been intensified in recent years to develop alternative weed control technology to the repeated use of propanil. The use of herbicides is economically important for production of rice. Field experiments are conducted annually in Arkansas to evaluate the activity of developmental and commercial herbicides for selective control of barnyardgrass and other weeds in rice. These experiments serve both industry and Arkansas agriculture by providing information on the selectivity of herbicides still in the developmental stage and by comparing the activity of these new …

Looking Ahead At Catholic Higher Ed, Gerard V. Bradley Apr 2002

Looking Ahead At Catholic Higher Ed, Gerard V. Bradley

Journal Articles

Here is what we got. The people in charge -- faculty, college administrators, trustees, other intellectual elites, and (judging by what they do) the bishops -- do not believe what they need to believe to restore Catholic education to the colleges: that a Catholic education is better because the faith is true. This I call the Indispensable Conviction. It is the pearl of great price. Our leaders no longer possess it. And, without a Catholic education, our magnificent campuses are like whited sepulchers.

Is the status quo really so dire? What does the next generation portend? Can demand for …

A Study Of Quality Of Life Issues In Community-Dwelling Elders, Kimberly S. Mcclane Phd

Dissertations

In the year 2000, there were approximately 35 million people in the United States who were 65 years of age or older, a ten-fold increase since 1900. The growth of this population has presented opportunities and challenges to American society. Health care needs, physical changes of aging, and the allocation of health care resources are several of the issues that need to be addressed (Federal Interagency Forum on Aging-Related Statistics, 2000). Quality of life measurement tools have been used to assess the health and social needs of aging people both in the United States and internationally since their conception in …

Assessing The Risk Of Executing The Innocent: A Case For Allowing Access To Physical Evidence For Posthumous Dna Testing, Anne-Marie Moyes Apr 2002

Assessing The Risk Of Executing The Innocent: A Case For Allowing Access To Physical Evidence For Posthumous Dna Testing, Anne-Marie Moyes

Vanderbilt Law Review

On February 5, 1985, Helen Schartner was raped and murdered on her way home from a bar in Virginia Beach. Joseph O'Dell was at the same bar that night, and fellow patrons claim he left the bar shortly after Schartner departed. Several hours later, O'Dell was seen entering a convenience store with blood on his hands, face, and clothes. O'Dell's estranged girlfriend--who had previously falsely accused O'Dell of other murders--read about Schartner's murder and called the police to report that O'Dell had left some bloody clothes in her garage. The police arrested O'Dell and charged him with the rape and …

Separation Of Enantiomers With Chiral Dendrimer, Jie Zhuang Apr 2002

Separation Of Enantiomers With Chiral Dendrimer, Jie Zhuang

Masters Theses

Chiral dendrimers with .unique ordered structures are especially attractive for the recognition of chiral molecules based on the three point contact model. We have successfully synthesized first generation chiral dendrimers containing L- and D- tryptophan methyl ester moieties and characterized them by NMR, IR, UV-Visible, MS, and optical activity. L-tryptophan methyl ester dendrimer was converted to its acid form in order to attach it to aminopropyl silica for the HPLC separation of enantiomers. The aminopropyl silica containing 1.52mmols/g of NH2 groups binds about 0.3mmols of dendrimer per gram and has about 0.4mmols of free NH2 groups per gram. …

Evaluation Of Clozapine Discriminative Stimulus Properties As A Function Of Training Dose, Adam J. Prus Apr 2002

Evaluation Of Clozapine Discriminative Stimulus Properties As A Function Of Training Dose, Adam J. Prus

Masters Theses

Clozapine (CLZ) is an atypical antipsychotic with negligible extrapyramidal side-effects. Unfortunately, CLZ drug discrimination (DD) research has yielded inconsistencies with CLZ's known pharmacological characteristics. Porter et al. (2000) have suggested that the standard 5.0 mg/kg CLZ training dose is too high, thus accounting for difficulty in assessing clozapine's discriminative stimulus (SD) effects. Therefore, 16 male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained to discriminate either 1.25 (Group II) or 5.0 mg/kg (Group I) CLZ from vehicle in a two-choice DD task. The typical anti psychotic haloperidol (0.1-0.4 mg/kg) did not substitute for either CLZ SD, with the exception of …

An Examination Of The Psychosocial Functioning Of Children With Drug Or Alcohol Dependent Fathers, Cathy G. Cooke Apr 2002

An Examination Of The Psychosocial Functioning Of Children With Drug Or Alcohol Dependent Fathers, Cathy G. Cooke

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Parental substance abuse is linked to many of the problems facing American children. Research suggests that children of substance abusing parents are more likely to exhibit emotional and behavioral disorders than children with parents who do not abuse substances (Hogan, 1998); however, previous investigations have focused almost exclusively on children whose fathers misuse alcohol. The purpose of the present study was: 1) to examine the psychosocial adjustment of children whose fathers manifest substance abuse disorder other than alcohol as compared to the psychosocial functioning of children whose fathers exhibit alcohol abuse and to the psychosocial adjustment of children in a …

The Effects Of Technology On Urban High School Students' Sense Of Classroom Community, Mervyn J. Wighting Apr 2002

The Effects Of Technology On Urban High School Students' Sense Of Classroom Community, Mervyn J. Wighting

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

This study measured the sense of classroom community among students from two different grades in an independent urban high school (N = 181). A standardized instrument was used to compare sense of community in classes whose teachers used computers frequently and consistently in their instruction with others in which the teachers seldom or never included computer use in the classroom. Quantitative analysis revealed that there was a significant difference between the classes in terms of one of the sub-scales of the instrument; students whose teachers used computers frequently and consistently scored higher on the learning sub-scale of the sense …

Prostate Specific Membrane Antigen (Psma): Immunoassay Development And Characterization Of Transcriptional Regulation, Zhen Xiao Apr 2002

Prostate Specific Membrane Antigen (Psma): Immunoassay Development And Characterization Of Transcriptional Regulation, Zhen Xiao

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Prostate cancer (PCA) is the most common cancer and the second leading cause of death among American men. The high mortality is greatly attributed to the lack of early detection tools and effective treatment for metastasis and relapses. Biomarkers that can discriminate benign from malignant tumor and signal the development of androgen independent and metastatic tumor are needed. A biomarker designated prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) has the potential to fulfill this need. The objective of this study is to develop a clinically useful immunoassay for quantitation of serum PSMA and to study the molecular mechanism underlying the upregulation of …

Chipping Away At The Gendered Wall Implications For Being A Woman Sociologist, Rebecca Fogerty Grove Apr 2002

Chipping Away At The Gendered Wall Implications For Being A Woman Sociologist, Rebecca Fogerty Grove

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate what factors may determine productivity among sociology professors and factors that-affect promotions and hiring. In today's academic institutions, the gender barrier is considered nonexistent; however, the actual existence of the gender barrier is often apparent in departmental hiring decisions and university tenure policies. With knowledge of current, often subtle, biased standards, the gender barrier can begin to be dismantled to offer true equality for all potential and current professors. The data was collected in 2001, during the fall academic semester from departments of sociology (n=2 l 8). This thesis looks at the …
