A No-Buff Technique To Produce Surfaces That Induce Alignment In Liquid Crystals, Daniel Harrison, Michael R. Fisch, Rolfe G. Petschek, J.-F. Li
Faculty Scholarship
Alignment layers for liquid crystal cells were prepared by directional deposition of high molecular weight rigid-rod ionomers on glass and indium–tin–oxide substrates. Several deposition techniques were developed and tested. Material type, concentration, temperature, and application technique were systematically varied and the resultant alignment of the liquid crystals studied. Three different methods of applying the alignment layer were investigated: directional spray deposition, brushing, and directional deposition using a squeegee (doctor bar). The application temperature ranged from 30 to 80°C. The best results were obtained using a squeegee to perform directional deposition at temperature of less than 60°C. The alignment layers obtained …

Mexican American Women: Unique Superintendents In Texas, Maria Cristina Quilantan
Mexican American Women: Unique Superintendents In Texas, Maria Cristina Quilantan
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The number of Mexican American women educators is disproportionate to the number of Mexican American women in administrative positions, especially at the superintendency level. During the school year 2001–2002, there were 1,175 superintendents in the State of Texas; 939 male, 66 Mexican American males; 159 White females, and 10 Mexican American women. The stereotypical sex-role expectations are evident among Mexican American women; these expectations are governed by a value system that follows tradition and culture in which docility and passivity are inculcated at a very early age. The organizational structure of the public school system also marginalizes the involvement of …

“Certain Fundamental Truths”: A Dialectic On Negative And Positive Liberty In Hate-Speech Cases, W. Bradley Wendel
Law and Contemporary Problems
Matthew Hale is a white supremacist who likes to attract media attention. He set himself up as the leader of a racist "church" called the World Church of the Creator and immediately went about attempting to put an articulate, polite face on the organization. Hale's application to become a licensed attorney in Illinois, his subsequent denial and the litigation that followed are discussed.

The Fourth Amendment In The Twenty-First Century: Technology, Privacy, And Human Emotions, Andrew E. Taslitz
Law and Contemporary Problems
Police and local political officials in Tampa FL argued that the FaceIt system promotes safety, but privacy advocates objected to the city's recording or utilizing facial images without the victims' consent, some staging protests against the FaceIt system. Privacy objects seem to be far more widely shared than this small protest might suggest.

Beyond Nunn-Lugar: Curbing The Next Wave Of Weapons Proliferation Threats From Russia, Thomas Riisager Mr., Henry D. Sokolski Mr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The chapters in this book were originally commissioned by the Nonproliferation Policy Education Center (NPEC) as part of a study on the future of U.S.-Russian nonproliferation cooperation. This book is different from other studies of U.S.-Russian cooperation because it relies on competitive strategies, which detail how best to pit one's strengths against a competitor's weaknesses in a series of moves and countermoves. The goal is to devise strategies that force one's competitor to spend more time and resources shoring up his weaknesses than in taking offensive action.

History Of Diabetes Mellitus, Awad M. Ahmed
History Of Diabetes Mellitus, Awad M. Ahmed
Saudi Medical Journal
Clinical features similar to diabetes mellitus were described 3000 years ago by the ancient Egyptians. The term "diabetes" was first coined by Araetus of Cappodocia (81-133AD). Later, the word mellitus (honey sweet) was added by Thomas Willis (Britain) in 1675 after rediscovering the sweetness of urine and blood of patients (first noticed by the ancient Indians). It was only in 1776 that Dobson (Britain) firstly confirmed the presence of excess sugar in urine and blood as a cause of their sweetness. In modern time, the history of diabetes coincided with the emergence of experimental medicine. An important milestone in the …

Pyruvate, orthophosphate (Pi) dikinase (PPDK) is best recognized as a chloroplastic C4 cycle enzyme. As one of the key regulatory foci for controlling flux through this photosynthetic pathway, it is strictly and reversibly regulated by light. This light/dark modulation is mediated by reversible phosphorylation of a conserved threonine residue in the active-site domain by the PPDK regulatory protein (RP), a bifunctional protein kinase/phosphatase. PPDK is also present in C3 plants, although it has no known photosynthetic function. Nevertheless, in this report we show that C3 PPDK in leaves of several angiosperms and in isolated intact spinach (Spinacia …
Adipocyte Specific Release Of Tumor Necrosis Factor In Response To Medicinal Plants And Synthetic Nucleosides In Vitro, Afra Sultan Saeed Al Shamsi
Adipocyte Specific Release Of Tumor Necrosis Factor In Response To Medicinal Plants And Synthetic Nucleosides In Vitro, Afra Sultan Saeed Al Shamsi
Theses
Adipocytes play an important role in insulin resistance through its endocrine functions such as production of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). Adipocyte specific TNF-α inhibits insulin receptor protein tyrosin kinase activity causing the development of type2 diabetes (NIDDM). Nucleosides trigger a variety of regulatory effects in biological systems, such as inhibiting or stimulating protein synthesis. The present study was carried to screen seven synthetic nucleosides, for their effect on TNF-α release from adipocytes in vitro. Subcutaneous adipose tissue was dissected under sterile condition and plated in 24-well dishes in a humidified CO2-incubator in the presence or absence of …

A Method For Evaluating Storm-Damaged Cotton For Extension County Agents And Specialists, C Dale Monks, Dennis P. Delaney, Malcom Pegues, Michael G. Patterson
Journal of Extension
Extension county agents and specialists are often asked to provide unbiased crop damage assessments when storms occur. There is generally no published methodology on which to base damage assessments. The objectives of the project described here were to (a) provide an unbiased database to producers and crop insurance representatives and (b) develop an unbiased, in-field method for damage evaluations for cotton. This method proved to be effective in allowing Extension personnel to monitor crop damage over time as a result of the storm. It provided an unbiased database for use by Extension and USDA workers, producers, and crop insurance personnel.

A Mixture Of Elastic Materials With Different Constituent Temperatures And Internal Constraints, Stephen M. Klisch
A Mixture Of Elastic Materials With Different Constituent Temperatures And Internal Constraints, Stephen M. Klisch
Mechanical Engineering
A novel treatment of the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics and the development of general thermomechanical constraints are introduced for a mixture of two elastic materials in which the constituents may have different temperatures. First, a homothermal quasi-static process at a common mixture temperature is introduced. Part I of the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics is invoked to assert that the Clausius integrals are path-independent, which leads to a prescription, or an identification, of the partial entropy functions. Then, two assumptions are introduced that establish the values of the partial entropy functions for general processes, including those for which the constituent temperatures …
