Health In Predynastic Egypt: Using Skeletal Stress Indicators To Assess The Overall Health Of A Working Class Population In Hierakonpolis, Jeanette Matovich
Anthropology
The present project attempts to assess the overall health of a Predynastic Egyptian working class population, based on skeletal stress indicators. This study contributes to a growing knowledge base regarding the biological anthropology of Predynastic Egyptians. Information generated from this research may help address larger questions, such as: how do Predynastic Egyptian mortality profiles compare with each other, and with other groups from around the world? Fifty-three skeletons were examined from Hierakonpolis' HK43 cemetery. Data were collected according to conventional osteological methods. Most skeletal stress indicators observed were mild. Evidence of degenerative disease in adults reflected lifetimes of hard, physical …

Alcohol-Affected Offenders: Alaska's Crime Conundrum, Maureen Frances Harwood
Alcohol-Affected Offenders: Alaska's Crime Conundrum, Maureen Frances Harwood
Arctic and Northern Studies
Offenders with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) are being inadequately identified and addressed in Alaska's criminal justice system. Without recognition of the problems associated with FAS (e.g., slow cognitive pacing, language impairments, impaired ability to deal with abstract concepts such as time) the alcohol-affected individual's ability to understand and effectively participate in the criminal justice process is compromised. This thesis examines the challenges that people with FAS and other prenatal alcohol exposure conditions present for Alaska's criminal justice system. Ways of protecting people prenatally exposed to alcohol against poor life outcomes, like trouble with the law are explained. Additionally, I present …

Optimization By Varied Beam Search In Hopfield Networks, Tony R. Martinez, Xinchuan Zeng
Faculty Publications
This paper shows that the performance of the Hopfield network for solving optimization problems can be improved by a varied beam search algorithm. The algorithm varies the beam search size and beam intensity during the network relaxation process. It consists of two stages: increasing the beam search parameters in the flrst stage and then decreasing them in the second stage. The purpose of using such a scheme is to provide the network with a better chance to find more and better solutions. A large number of simulation results based on 200 randomly generated city distributions of the 10-city traveling salesman …

We present our recent simulated results on Cr (5 nm)/ Cu (5 nm)/ Co (5 nm)/ Cu (3 nm)/ Co (2 nm) pseudo-spin valve dots. The simulated results agree qualitatively with the experimental results. Three different sizes of elliptical dots, and were simulated. Our simulations show that in these types of dots magnetization reversal occurs by the formation of domain walls: for and for No domain wall was observed in the reversal of the dots. For such dots, the simulated loops show a small two-step reversal pattern with the thin upper layer partially reversing followed by complete reversal of both …

Name-Bearing Types And Taxonomic Synopsis Of Three Lycaenid Butterfly Taxa From Western Canada (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae), Norbert G. Kondla, Crispin S. Guppy
The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey
We clarify which of two designated lectotypes of Chrysophanus florus Edwards, 1884 is valid. We also show that the putative holotype of Plebeius saepiolus insulanus Blackmore, 1920 is actually a lectotype. A valid neotype designation for Lycaena saepiolus amica Edwards, 1863 is provided. Publication dates are corrected and we also briefly review the various taxonomic interpretations and distributions that appear in the literature with respect to these taxa.

Laurasian Migration Explains Gondwanan Disjunctions: Evidence From Malpighiaceae, Charles C. Davis, Charles D. Bell, Sarah Mathews, Michael J. Donoghue

Explanations for biogeographic disjunctions involving South America and Africa typically invoke vicariance of western Gondwanan biotas or long distance dispersal. These hypotheses are problematical because many groups originated and diversified well after the last known connection between Africa and South America (≈105 million years ago), and it is unlikely that "sweepstakes" dispersal accounts for many of these disjunctions. Phylogenetic analyses of the angiosperm clade Malpighiaceae, combined with fossil evidence and molecular divergence-time estimates, suggest an alternative hypothesis to account for such distributions. We propose that Malpighiaceae originated in northern South America, and that members of several clades repeatedly migrated into …

[1] Trace elements were measured in the aerosol plume produced by lava‐seawater interactions along the shoreline of Kilauea volcano, Hawaii. Plume concentrations were normalized relative to Hawaiian basalt composition and showed a linear log‐log co‐variation with their emanation coefficient (an indicator of element volatility). Normalized aerosol concentrations also consistently covaried with corresponding normalized concentrations in dilute fumarolic gas from Kilauea volcano and fumarolic gas condensates from Kudryavy and Merapi volcanoes, despite different mechanisms of element volatilization. Conservatively estimated regional ocean deposition rates of Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb, Mn, Zn, Fe and P were >50 times background rates. Thus, upper ocean …

We report a DNA microarray-based method for genome-wide monitoring of competitively grown transformants to identify genes whose overexpression confers a specific cellular phenotype. Whereas transcriptional profiling identifies differentially expressed genes that are correlated with particular aspects of the cellular phenotype, this functional genomics approach determines genes that result in a specific physiology. This parallel gene-trait mapping method consists of transforming a strain with a genomic library, enriching the cell population in transformants containing the trait conferring gene(s), and finally using DNA microarrays to simultaneously isolate and identify the enriched gene inserts. Various methods of enrichment can be used; here, genes …
