Arctic–Champ: A Program To Study Arctic Hydrology And Its Role In Global Change, Charles J. Vorosmarty, Larry Hinzman, Bruce Peterson, David Bromwhich, Lawrence C. Hamilton, James Morison, Vladimir Romanovsky, Matthew Sturm, Robert Webb
Sociology
The Arctic constitutes a unique and important environment that is central to the dynamics and evolution of the Earth system. The Arctic water cycle, which controls countless physical, chemical, and biotic processes, is also unique and important. These processes, in turn, regulate the climate, habitat, and natural resources that are of great importance to both native and industrial societies. Comprehensive understanding of water cycling across the Arctic and its linkage to global biogeophysical dynamics is a scientific as well as strategic policy imperative.

The isolation and characterization of cDNAs encoding poly(ADP-ribose) glycohydrolase (PARG) enzymes and the amino acid sequences of PARGs from several species are described. PARG is involved in the cellular response to DNA damage and its proper function is associated with the body's response to neoplastic disorder inducing agents and oxidative stress. Expression vectors containing the cDNAs and cells transformed with the vectors are described. Probes and primers that hybridize with the cDNAs are described. Expression of the cDNA in E. coli results in an enzymatically active protein of about 111 kDa and an active fragment of about 59 kDa. Methods …
Automatic Feather Sexing Of Poultry Chicks Using Ultraviolet Imaging, Yang Tao, Joel Walker
Automatic Feather Sexing Of Poultry Chicks Using Ultraviolet Imaging, Yang Tao, Joel Walker
Patents Granted
The invention provides an improved method for automatic chick sexing. Under regular lighting, the color intensity of down and feather of baby chicks are essentially the same and it is difficult to separate the feathers in the image. By using UV light, the optical system significantly enhanced the feathers by suppressing the downs in images. It produced clear feather signals for subsequent identification and allocation of feathers in the image. The feather image segments could be obtained through thresholding with any value from 200 to 230 on the 255 maximum intensity scale. Important features of the invention include a video …

Mt. Cleveland is one of more than 40 active volcanoes in Alaska that is monitored by the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO). It is located on the western half of Chuginadak, a remote and uninhabited island in the east central Aleutians that lies 1526 km southwest of Anchorage. The closest inhabited community, Nikolski, is 75 km to the east on Umnak Island (Figure 1). Mt. Cleveland erupted explosively on 19 February and on 11 and 19 March 2001. Because the volcano is not yet monitored with seismic, deformation, or other geophysical instruments, satellite imagery was the only effective tool for detecting …

Application Of Electrochemical Techniques To The Researches In Life Science, Jian-Tao Pang, Chun-Hai Fan, Gen-Xi Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
The research work of our group in the last two years is briefly reviewed in this paper. By using electrochemical method, and combining some other chemical and biological techniques, lots of achievements have been obtained. And these researches are towards some hot topics in life science, such as function conversion, interaction between signal molecules and proteins, electron-transfer of biomolecules, gene detection, structural biology, biochemical analysis and the third generation biosensors.
Slippage And Change Point Problem With Directional Data., Arnab Kumar Laha Dr.
Slippage And Change Point Problem With Directional Data., Arnab Kumar Laha Dr.
Doctoral Theses
In this thesis we develop statistical methods for dealing with two problems namely (1) THE SLIPPAGE PROBLEM and (2) THE CHANGE POINT PROB- LEM in the set-up of directional data. In this chapter, we provide an intro- duction to these problems and discuss the importance of the present work. The slippage problem is basically a problem to detect whether any unspecified observation in a given random sample comes from a distribution different from that for all the other remaining observations. This can also be viewed as a problem of outlier detection or that of spuriosity. This problem assumes great importance …

United States Patent Application Publication: Counter Selection Strategy For Gram-Negative Bacteria, Stephen K. Farrand, Paul E. Staswick, Thomas E. Clemente
Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications
A Gram-negative bacterium useful for genetically engineering plants is provided. The Gram-negative bacterium contains, as part of genome, an inducible regulatory sequence operatively linked to a nucleotide sequence encoding a levansucrase. Alternatively, the Gram-negative bacterium comprises a recombinant nucleic acid construct containing an inducible regulatory sequence operatively linked to a nucleotide sequence encoding a levansucrase. Also provided are recombinant nucleic acid constructs comprising an inducible regulatory sequence operatively coupled to a nucleotide sequence encoding a levansucrase and a method for transforming plants using the Gram-negative bacterium of the present invention.

Multiple Intelligences And Teachers' Use Of The School Library Media Center, Jacqueline Albright Pugh
Multiple Intelligences And Teachers' Use Of The School Library Media Center, Jacqueline Albright Pugh
Theses and Dissertations
Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences asserts that each person has a unique cognitive profile made up of several different types of intelligences. This theory is being incorporated into school curricula in lesson planning. Gardner has identified eight types of intelligences that humans can possess. In order to plan instruction that develops each of the different types of intelligences, teachers need access to a wide array of resources. In this study, surveys were sent to 150 classroom teachers from grades K-6 in each of the elementary schools in Burlington County to assess teachers' familiarity with Multiple Intelligences and to assess …

A bathymetric survey was recently conducted in Southeast Florida (Broward County) during April 2001 using the Laser Airborne Depth Sounder (LADS) system. This four-meter resolution survey encompassed from North Dade County, through the length of Broward County coastline, to south Palm Beach County (approximately 43 km) and from the shore eastward to depths of approximately 40 m (2.5-3.5 km offshore). This georeferenced data was sun shaded at various angles and azimuths and draped with a NOAA NAPP 1:24,000 georeferenced air photograph mosaic. The model was zoomed and tipped to the desired orientations and processed into three-dimensional perspectives. Two views, slightly …
