Anxieties Of Impotence: Cuban Americas In New York City, Christina M. Tourino Jun 2002

Anxieties Of Impotence: Cuban Americas In New York City, Christina M. Tourino

English Faculty Publications

In her paper, "Anxieties of Impotence: Cuban Americas in New York City, " Christina Marie Tourino seeks a basis for comparison between Latin American literatures and Latino literatures of the United States. Such groups have rarely been compared in the past because they are considered part of the same literary "family." However, Tourino argues that owing to the flows of capital driven by global pressures, literatures between and among Latin Americans and Latinos hail from such culturally heterogeneous sites and are made over by so many relocations that they do call for comparative projects. Instead of comparing texts across national …

Expression Of Gp73, A Resident Golgi Membrane Protein, In Viral And Nonviral Liver Disease, Raleigh Kladney, Xiaoyen Cui, Gary Bulla, Elizabeth Brunt, Claus Fimmel

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

GP73 is a novel type II Golgi membrane protein of unknown function that is expressed in the hepatocytes of patients with adult giant-cell hepatitis (Gene 2000;249:53-65). Its expression pattern in human liver disease and the regulation of its expression in hepatocytes have not been systematically studied. The aims of the present study were to compare GP73 protein levels in viral and nonviral human liver disease and in normal livers, to identify its cellular sources, and to study the regulation of its expression in hepatoma cells in vitro. GP73 protein levels were quantitated in explant livers of patients with well-defined disease …

Proposal Of Critical Habitat For The Northern Great Plains Breeding Population Of Piping Plovers (Charadrius Melodus) Jun 2002

Proposal Of Critical Habitat For The Northern Great Plains Breeding Population Of Piping Plovers (Charadrius Melodus)

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The purpose of the proposed action is to designate critical habitat for the northern Great Plains breeding population of piping plovers (Charadrius melodus) by utilizing provisions of the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (Act). The purpose of the Act is to conserve the ecosystems upon which endangered and threatened species depend. Critical habitat designation identifies areas essential to the survival and recovery of the piping plover, and describes physical and biological features within critical habitat that require special management considerations to achieve conservation of the species.

Kolmogorov Complexity And Chaotic Phenomena, Vladik Kreinovich, Isaak A. Kunin Jun 2002

Kolmogorov Complexity And Chaotic Phenomena, Vladik Kreinovich, Isaak A. Kunin

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Born about three decades ago, Kolmogorov Complexity Theory (KC) led to important discoveries that, in particular, give a new understanding of the fundamental problem: interrelations between classical continuum mathematics and reality (physics, biology, engineering sciences, ...).

Specifically, in addition to the equations, physicists use the following additional difficult-to-formalize property: that the initial conditions and the value of the parameters must not be abnormal. We will describe a natural formalization of this property, and show that this formalization in good accordance with theoretical physics. At present, this formalization has been mainly applied to the foundations of physics. However, potentially, more practical …

Structural Change And Lead-Lag Relationship Between The Nikkei Spot Index And Futures Price: A Genetic Programming Approach, Donald Lien, Yiu Kuen Tse, X. B. Chang Jun 2002

Structural Change And Lead-Lag Relationship Between The Nikkei Spot Index And Futures Price: A Genetic Programming Approach, Donald Lien, Yiu Kuen Tse, X. B. Chang

Research Collection School of Economics

In this paper we adopt a nonparametric genetic programming approach to identify the structural changes in the Nikkei spot index and futures price. Due to the dominance of the “normal” period in sample size, the lead-lag relationship identified in the spot-futures system based on conventional methods such as test for Granger causality pertains to the normal period and may not be applicable in the “extreme” period. Using genetic programming we identify the lead-lag relationship based on the chronological ordering of the structural changes in the spot and futures markets. Our results show that in recent periods, major market changes originated …

Grassy Weeds, Floyd F. Wiedmeier, Paul O. Johnson, Leon J. Wrage, Gary Larson Jun 2002

Grassy Weeds, Floyd F. Wiedmeier, Paul O. Johnson, Leon J. Wrage, Gary Larson

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Grassy weeds are a problem in all field crops. They must be identified at early stages of growth so they can be controlled before crop yields are seriously threatened. Control measures are not the same for all grassy weeds, so accurate seedling identification is essential. Most grassy weeds and grain crops look very much alike in the seedling stages. However, if you look closely (a small hand lens helps) you can pick out the unique vegetative characteristics of each weed and crop seedling. Rudiments of the seed coat are helpful to distinguish crop seedlings from grassy weeds; however, seed coat …

Absinth Wormwood, Leon J. Wrage, Paul O. Johnson Jun 2002

Absinth Wormwood, Leon J. Wrage, Paul O. Johnson

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Wormwood sage (absinth wormwood) can be controlled in the fall. Recent SDSU W.E.E.D. Project data shows fall spraying on wormwood sage to be very effective. Fall is the only time fencelines or field corners are accessible. There is less risk of drift to non-target, sensitive crops. Fall extends the spray season and spreads the work load. Fall spraying reduces haying/grazing limitations.

Gypsy Moth In South Dakota, Murdick Mcleod Jun 2002

Gypsy Moth In South Dakota, Murdick Mcleod

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The gypsy moth has been the most destructive insect pest of trees and shrubs in the eastern United States following its introduction in 1869. Large infestations are capable of completely defoliating deciduous trees over extensive areas. Defoliation alters the environment, reducing shade and affecting water quality. Defoliation also weakens trees and predisposes them to attack from other insects and diseases, often resulting in tree mortality. A major annoyance in urban and recreational areas, in addition to the unsightliness of defoliated trees, is the presence of masses of caterpillars and fecal droppings resulting from heavy gypsy moth infestations. In addition, some …

Leafy Spurge, Leon J. Wrage, Darrel Deneke

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Leafy spurge is an especially difficult noxious weed. Fall control is an essential part of a leafy spurge control program. Retreatment is required for 2,4-D. Fall herbicides are effective where sheep or goats have grazed. Fall is a good time to apply spot treatment herbicides. It is the only time some fencelines and field corners are accessible.

Changes In State Pesticide Handling Regulations - 1995, Jim Wilson

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

New state pesticide handling regulations were implemented May 1, 1995, which are designed to reduce the risk of contamination from pesticide use and handling operations. The new regulation, ARSD 12:56:17, defines an “Operational Area” as an area where pesticides are transferred, mixed, handled, etc. after the container’s seal has been broken or where pesticides are rinsed from containers or other equipment. “Operational Area Containment” is a system designed to collect and hold, for reuse or disposal, pesticides which are spilled, rinsed or otherwise lost at the operational area.

Producing Annual And Alternative Crops For Forage, Edward K. Twidwell

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Annual crops can be a valuable part of the normal farm operation. They are used to provide supplemental forage when perennial forage production is low. Additionally, under drought conditions, these annual crops may be the only choices available for emergency sources of forage. There are also several alternative crops available that can be used as forage crops. This publication provides general information and specific agronomic information about these crops.

Comparative Phenotypic, Molecular, And Virulence Characterization Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus O3:K6 Isolates, P.S. Marie Yeung, Micaela C. Hayes, Angelo Depaola, Charles A. Kaysner, Laura Kornstein Jun 2002

Comparative Phenotypic, Molecular, And Virulence Characterization Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus O3:K6 Isolates, P.S. Marie Yeung, Micaela C. Hayes, Angelo Depaola, Charles A. Kaysner, Laura Kornstein

Biological Sciences

Historically, Vibrio parahaemolyticus infections have been characterizedby sporadic cases caused by multiple, diverse serotypes. However, since 1996, V. parahaemolyticus serotype O3:K6 strains havebeen associated with several large-scale outbreaks of illness, suggesting the emergence of a "new" group of organisms withenhanced virulence. We have applied three different molecularsubtyping techniques to identify an appropriate method for differentiatingO3:K6 isolates from other serotypes. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis(PFGE) following NotI digestion differentiated seven closelyrelated subtypes among O3:K6 and related strains, which weredistinct from PFGE patterns for non-O3:K6 isolates. Ribotypingand tdh sequencing were less discriminatory than PFGE, but furtherconfirmed close genetic relationships among recent O3:K6 isolates. In vitro adherence …

The Future Of Stock Enhancements: Lessons For Hatchery Practice From Conservation Biology, Culum Brown, Rachel L. Day Jun 2002

The Future Of Stock Enhancements: Lessons For Hatchery Practice From Conservation Biology, Culum Brown, Rachel L. Day

Aquaculture Collection

The world’s fish species are under threat from habitat degradation and over-exploitation. In many instances, attempts to bolster stocks have been made by rearing fish in hatcheries and releasing them into the wild. Fisheries restocking programmes have primarily headed these attempts. However, a substantial number of endangered species recovery programmes also rely on the release of hatchery-reared individuals to ensure long-term population viability. Fisheries scientists have known about the behavioural deficits displayed by hatchery-reared fish and the resultant poor survival rates in the wild for over a century. Whilst there remain considerable gaps in our knowledge about the exact causes …

The Production Of Communication Signals At The Air–Water And Water–Substrate Boundaries, Sean C. Lema, John T. Kelly Jun 2002

The Production Of Communication Signals At The Air–Water And Water–Substrate Boundaries, Sean C. Lema, John T. Kelly

Biological Sciences

The 2 interfaces of the aquatic environment, the boundary between air–water and water–substrate, have distinctive physical characteristics that facilitate the production of communication signals. Recent evidence suggests that animals living on or near these boundaries use the interface to generate signals in 2 ways: (a) by producing a signal that propagates along the interface or (b) by producing a signal at the interface that is transmitted and detected within 1 of the component media. By examining the diversity of behaviors used to produce signals at these boundaries, the authors illustrate how human perception of these environments may cause researchers to …

Fisheries Research Reports

This synopsis presents a review of the literature and research to April 2001on the biology of black bream, Acanthopagrus butcheri (Sparidae), particularly in relation to Western Australian populations. A. butcheri is a commercially and recreationally important species, and is endemic to the coastal lakes, estuaries, river systems and sheltered coastal waters of southern Australia, including Tasmania. Separate stocks reside within each river/estuarine system in southwestern Australia, and there is considerable variation in feeding, growth rates and age at maturity among stocks. For rivers/estuaries that are seasonally flushed in winter, downstream movement with the flush is followed by the annual upstream …

Notes On Formal Constructivism, D. Joyner, P. Lejarraga

Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal

Our aim is to sketch some ideas related to how we (as in, we two) think we (as in, we humans) think. "That theory is useless. It isn't even wrong." - Wolfgang Pauli. Our hope in this paper is to provide a theory, admittedly somewhat vague, of how we think about mathematics. We also hope our ideas do not cause the reader to be reminded of Pauli's quote above. These notes were motivated by the interesting book by Changeaux and Connes.
