A Grid-Generation Based Method For Information Fusion, Tian Xiang Yue, Ji Yuan Liu, Ying An Wang
A Grid-Generation Based Method For Information Fusion, Tian Xiang Yue, Ji Yuan Liu, Ying An Wang
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Relative studies on multi-scale information fusion, multi-source information fusion and multi-sensor information fusion are reviewed. On the basis of analyzing problems in existing methods of information fusion, a grid-generation model for simulating population density of China is proposed as a case of multi-source information fusion. By fusing remotely sensed data, meteorological data, soil data and statistical data, spatial distribution of population density in China is successfully simulated, in which grid generation process is described in detail. In addition, the basic idea of a grid-generation model as a case of multi-scale information fusion is discussed. The models for multi-source information fusion …
Long Run Technical Change In An Energy-Environmenteconomy (E3) Model For An Ia System, J. H. Köhler
Long Run Technical Change In An Energy-Environmenteconomy (E3) Model For An Ia System, J. H. Köhler
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
A world macroeconomic model is being developed to investigate policies for climate change and sustainabledevelopment, as a module of an IAM structure for the UK Tyndall Centre. This requires an economic modelfor the next 50-100 years, to show how changes in industrial structure and technology change GHGemissions. There is no suitable and generally accepted theory of long term technical change/development(Kondratiev waves) for incorporation in a macroeconomic modelling structure. However, there is now a gooddescriptive theory, which is intended to provide an economic history perspective of long term change. This isFreeman and Louçν (2001). The objective of our model is to …

In Situ Observations On Three Species Of Large-Finned Deep-Sea Squids, M. Vecchione, C. F. E. Roper, Edith A. Widder, Tamara M. Frank
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
The manned submersible Johnson Sea-Link II was used for a series of dives on the continental slope of the eastern Gulf of Mexico in September 1995. The deep-sea squids Mastigoteuthis hjorti Chun, 1913 and Octopoteuthis megaptera (Verrill, 1885) were repeatedly observed at depths of 600–850 m. Both species were videotaped alive, in situ, for the first time during these dives. These species share the characteristic of very large fins, almost as long as the mantle length, but their swimming behavior observed in the vicinity of the submersible differed greatly. Throughout most of the videotaped sequences of O. megaptera, it …
Reducing Childhood Pedestrian Injuries: Proceedings Of A Multidisciplinary Conference, Richard A. Schieber, Maria Vegega
Reducing Childhood Pedestrian Injuries: Proceedings Of A Multidisciplinary Conference, Richard A. Schieber, Maria Vegega
United States Public Health Resources
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Motor vehicle crashes are associated with one of every five deaths among children 1 to 14 years of age in the United States, and pedestrian injuries account for a third of them. Compared with occupant injuries, pedestrian injuries are more severe; death is five times more likely to occur among those injured. In 1999, 533 child pedestrians were killed, and at least 30,000 children were nonfatally injured in traffic. Another 200 were killed in non-traffic areas, including driveways, sidewalks, and parking lots. Traumatic brain injury accounts for more than half the fatalities.
Dr. Schieber noted that the decline …
Preprogramming Of Porphyrin−Nucleic Acid Assemblies Via Variation Of The Alkyl/Aryl Substituents Of Phosphonium Tetratolylporphyrins, Pavel Kubat, Kamil Lang, Vladimir Kral, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.
Preprogramming Of Porphyrin−Nucleic Acid Assemblies Via Variation Of The Alkyl/Aryl Substituents Of Phosphonium Tetratolylporphyrins, Pavel Kubat, Kamil Lang, Vladimir Kral, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Cationic alkyl/arylphosphonium meso-tetratolylporphyrins aggregate in an aqueous solution to form H-aggregates, J-aggregates, and long-range assemblies. The ratio between the monomer and various types of aggregates can be controlled by the substitution in the phosphonium units and by the ionic strength. A trimethylphosphonium derivative is predominantly monomeric, dimethylphenylphosphonium forms monomers as well as low-molecular-weight H- and J-aggregates, triphenylphosphonium forms mainly H- and J-aggregates, and tri(n-butyl)phosphonium forms mainly long-range assemblies. Porphyrin monomers associate with calf thymus DNA (binding constant Kb approximate to 10(7) M-1) and oligonucleotides (K-b approximate to 10(5-)10(6) M-1). The large size of the meso-substituents prevents the intercalation between base …

Relationships Among Glycolytic Potential, Dark Cutting (Dark, Firm, And Dry) Beef, And Cooked Beef Palatability, D.M. Wulf, R.S. Emnett, J.M. Leheska, S.J. Moeller
Animal Science Faculty Publications
One hundred beef carcasses were selected at three packing plants and were used to determine the relationship between glycolytic potential (GP) and dark, firm, and dry (DFD) beef and to determine the effects of DFD status and GP on cooked beef palatability. Eight individual muscles were excised from one hindquarter of each carcass at d 7 postmortem: longissimus lumborum, psoas major, gluteus medius, tensor fasciae latae, rectus femoris, semimembranosus, biceps femoris, and semitendinosus. Ultimate pH, colorimeter readings, and Warner-Bratzler shear force were determined for all eight muscles at d 7 postmortem. A ninemember trained sensory panel evaluated cooked longissimus lumborum, …
A Laboratory System For Examining The Influence Of Light On Diel Activity Of Stream Invertebrates, Annette L. Schloss
A Laboratory System For Examining The Influence Of Light On Diel Activity Of Stream Invertebrates, Annette L. Schloss
All Materials
I describe a laboratory system for investigating the role of light as a proximate cue for diel changes in locomotor activity and vertical location on the substrate of stream macro-invertebrates. The system consisted of computer-controlled halogen lamps positioned over a laboratory stream in which video-recordings were made of Stenonema modestum mayfly nymphs located on the undersides of unglazed tile substrates. Locomotor activity of study organisms in response to light changes were quantified during computer-programmed and reproducible light/dark (LD) cycles. The system provided the flexibility to simulate a variety of light environments so that the separate influences of light intensity and …
A Bayesian Approach To Inferring Population Structure From Dominant Markers, Kent E. Holsinger, Paul O. Lewis, Dipak Dey
A Bayesian Approach To Inferring Population Structure From Dominant Markers, Kent E. Holsinger, Paul O. Lewis, Dipak Dey
EEB Articles
Molecular markers derived from PCR amplification of genomic DNA are an important part of the toolkit of evolutionary geneticists. RAPDs, AFLPs, and ISSR polymorphisms allow analysis of species for which prior DNA sequence information is lacking, but dominance makes it impossible to apply standard techniques to calculate F-statistics. We describe a Bayesian method that allows direct estimates of Fst from dominant markers. In contrast to existing alternatives, we do not assume prior knowledge of the degree of within-population inbreeding. In particular, we do not assume that genotypes within populations are in Hardy-Winberg proportions. Our estimate of Fst incorporates uncertainty about …

Challenges, Strategies, And Tools For Research Scientists: Using Web-Based Information Resources, Danielle Bodrero Hoggan
Challenges, Strategies, And Tools For Research Scientists: Using Web-Based Information Resources, Danielle Bodrero Hoggan
E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)
Scientists face many challenges in harnessing web-based resources. Information overload, misinformation, fees, poorly designed navigation, and loss of browsability all hamper the scientist searcher. In addition, many scientists rely on only one or two databases and often miss unique information that is available through other sources. Librarians can team up with scientists to develop strategies to overcome the challenges of web-based information. For example, a librarian can teach effective information seeking techniques, including how to use controlled vocabularies, how to evaluate information on the web, and how to complement web-based resources with print resources. Librarians can also help scientists to …
