The Virtual Border: Countering Seaborne Container Terrorism, Hans Binnendijk, Leigh C. Caraher, Timothy Coffey, H. Scott Wynfield

Defense Horizons

America’s potential vulnerability to terrorist attack through exploitation of the global trade and transportation system is now widely recognized. The sheer magnitude and diversity of this global system coupled with the permeability of U.S. borders afford numerous avenues to attack American targets. Maritime commerce, and container shipping in particular, provides a highly attractive means not only of delivering weapons but also of smuggling terrorists themselves into the American homeland. Thousands of ships from every part of the globe deliver millions of individual containers to American ports each year. Compounding the problem is an inspection process that has been slow to …

Perception Of Interpersonal Behaviors Across Cultures, John Adamopoulos Aug 2002

Perception Of Interpersonal Behaviors Across Cultures, John Adamopoulos

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Cross-cultural psychology has played a very important role in identifying, describing, and even explaining psychological structures that are involved in the perception of interpersonal behavior. This chapter reviews work based on the research paradigm of subjective culture, which establishes that at least three interpersonal dimensions have been identified across cultures and historical periods: Association-Dissociation, Superordination-Subordination, and Intimacy-Formality. These three dimensions are often conceptualized as psychological universals, a notion that raises the question of the origins of the dimensions. By starting with the fundamental assumption that all social behavior is based on resource exchange, the chapter reviews a framework that attempts …

Effect Of Dietary Protein On Plasma Uric Acid, Body Weight, And Oxidative Stress In Broilers, Maribel Machin Aug 2002

Effect Of Dietary Protein On Plasma Uric Acid, Body Weight, And Oxidative Stress In Broilers, Maribel Machin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Uric acid is an important antioxidant due to its role as a free radical scavenger, and methods to elevate its plasma concentration may be important in animal health. In a preliminary study, the effect of dietary protein on plasma uric acid (PUA) was determined in 3-wk-old chicks. Twenty-four broiler chicks were randomly assigned to 4 diets: low protein (LP) containing 10% casein, medium protein (MP) containing 20% casein, high protein (HP) containing 45% casein and a commercial diet (COD) for 2-wks. PUA concentration increased in chicks fed HP diet and declined in chicks fed LP. In the principal study, PUA …

Organic Carbon And Fertility Of Forest Soils On The Allegheny Plateau Of West Virginia, Anthony Blaine Jenkins

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Soil series occurring above 1020 m in elevation in the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia were sampled and analyzed for soil organic and soil microbial biomass carbon as well as various fertility parameters. Additionally, vegetative biomass estimates were made at the sampling sites. The soil series sampled (established and tentative) are frigid, well and moderately-well drained inceptisols and spodosols, covered by northern hardwood or spuce-dominated forests. The purpose of the work was to document soil organic carbon (SOC), vegetative organic carbon (VOC), and soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC) of selected horizons, and nutrient stock ranges for these extensive series, …

Triplex Formation As Monitored By Epr Spectroscopy And Molecular Dynamics Studies Of Spin -Probe -Labeled Dnas, Eva Darian Aug 2002

Triplex Formation As Monitored By Epr Spectroscopy And Molecular Dynamics Studies Of Spin -Probe -Labeled Dnas, Eva Darian

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Molecular modeling has proven to be a powerful tool for studying structure and dynamics of biologically important molecules. Since the advent of nitroxide based spin-probes the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study of spin-labeled macromolecules has been able to provide insight into structural and dynamics properties of DNAs, proteins, and related systems. Spin labels have been extensively used to study the dynamics of oligonucleotides. An example of this is 5-membered ring nitroxide 5-(2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-3-ethynylpyrrolidine-1-oxyl)-uridine, which has been previously used in our laboratory to monitor triplex formation. Because of the difficult synthetic steps involved in the synthesis of this particular probe a new …

Stress Response Genes In The Human Proximal Tubules, Doyeob Kim Aug 2002

Stress Response Genes In The Human Proximal Tubules, Doyeob Kim

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The heat shock proteins (hsps) are believed to provide protection against a variety of insults such as elevated temperature, heavy metals and chemical agents. The goal of this study was to determine if the immortalized HK-2 human proximal tubule cell line could provide a model system to study the stress response of the proximal tubule cell. Heat stress, elevated temperature at 42.5°C for 1 hr, caused a marked increase only in hsp 70 mRNA and protein, but not that of hsp 27 or hsp 60 mRNA and protein. Similar results were obtained when the cells were subjected to 100 muM …

Distribution, Relative Abundance, And Reproductive Seasonality Of Larval Fish In The Red River, Timothy James Resseguie

Theses and Dissertations

Spawning habitat availability and reproductive timing are crucial factors that affect survival of larval fish. To understand temporal and spatial variation in larval fishes in the Red River, samples were collected from the Red River and North Dakota tributaries using ichthyoplankton nets. Collections were made during the spring and summer of 1999, 2000, and 2001. Spatial patterns were examined to uncover any variation in a cross section of the river. Common carp Cypritr j carpio, cyprinid spp. and white bass Morone crysops were more abundant near the surface than at mid-depth. Channel catfish Ictalurus pimctatus were more abundant at mid-depth …

Family Structure And Attachment And Their Role In Reducing Delinquency In The African American Family, Kiesha Warren Aug 2002

Family Structure And Attachment And Their Role In Reducing Delinquency In The African American Family, Kiesha Warren

Dissertations

The study uses data from the over sampling of African American youth (4,808) from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health to explore the relationship between family structure, attachment and their role in reducing delinquency. Using theelement of attachment from Hirschi’s (1969) social control theory, this study examines the historical development of the various family structures and the role attachment plays in reducing delinquency in those family structures. The study uses structural equation modeling to test this hypothesis. This study shows that when attachment is present regardless of the family structure delinquency will be reduced.

Genesis And Morphology Of Soil Pendants In Quaternary Landforms Of Pahranagat Valley, Nevada, Amy Lynn Brock Aug 2002

Genesis And Morphology Of Soil Pendants In Quaternary Landforms Of Pahranagat Valley, Nevada, Amy Lynn Brock

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Five geomorphic surfaces present in the northern Pahranagat Valley, Lincoln County, Nevada range in age from Early Pleistocene to Recent (Q1-Q5) and vary in clast lithology from dolomite to volcanic tephras. Two chronosequences and 5 lithosequences were compared to evaluate micro and macromorphic characteristics and development of soil pendants. This study presents a new interpretation for soil pendant development. Key features observed in the Pahranagat Valley pendants provide evidence for precipitation at the clast-pendant contact suggesting that newer deposits are not always found at the pendant terminus as other studies have assumed. These features include a void at the clast-pendant …

Feeding Corn Distiller's Co-Products To Beef Cattle, Kent Tjardes Aug 2002

Feeding Corn Distiller's Co-Products To Beef Cattle, Kent Tjardes

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The ethanol industry is currently in the midst of a considerable expansion period in South Dakota and surrounding states. As more ethanol plants are built and begin production, the availability of co-products for livestock feed will increase dramatically. Co-products may offer the cattle industry a tremendous opportunity to reduce feed costs without sacrificing performance. However, there are significant challenges that must be met before feeding these products. The majority of the new plants utilize a dry milling process to produce ethanol from corn. Dry milling (mash distillation) involves cleaning and grinding the grain into coarse flour. Then water and enzymes …

Why Is There Still Racism If There Is No Such Thing As "Race"?, Marshall H. Segall Aug 2002

Why Is There Still Racism If There Is No Such Thing As "Race"?, Marshall H. Segall

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

This presidential address is keyed to the exhibition "All of Us Are Related, Each of Us Is Unique." It reveals that there are no biological barriers between the 5.7 billion human beings that today inhabit the earth. We all have the same ancestors and the genetic diversity of contemporary human populations reflects the paths followed by our ancestors in the course of human migrations over the past 100,000 years. I assert that there is simply no such thing as "white people", "black people", "yellow people", or the like, except as social constructs. In a world in which intergroup hostility has …

Acculturation, Ethnic Identity, And Coping, Ute Schönpflug Aug 2002

Acculturation, Ethnic Identity, And Coping, Ute Schönpflug

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Ethnic identity is understood as a dynamic state, that is determined by three components: (1) by the degree of inclusion in the group of one's cultural origin; (2) the tendency to assimilate to the ethnic group of origin; and (3) the complementary tendency to differentiate from one's own ethnic group. In the same degree as the inclusion intensifies, the tendency to assimilate decreases and the tendency to differentiate increases and vice versa. A state of balance of the two complementary tendencies to assimilate and to differentiate is assumed to exist at an intermediate degree of inclusion (Brewer, 1992). The model …

Bilingualism: Language, Memory And Applied Issues, Jeanette Altarriba Aug 2002

Bilingualism: Language, Memory And Applied Issues, Jeanette Altarriba

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Bilingualism, or the knowledge of more than one language, is quite prevalent throughout the world. However, much of the cognitive literature that exists on language processing and memory retrieval has included participants who are monolingual speakers. The current chapter introduces the ways in which bilingualism has been investigated in the areas of autobiographical memory, memory recall, and communication in applied settings. The notion of code-switching or language-mixing is introduced as a strategic means through which bilingual memory may be fruitfully investigated.

Teaching Economics In United States History: One Teacher Shares Some Lessons, Kathleen S. Bullock

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

This paper addresses the value and benefits of teaching economics in U.S. History at the high school level. Some of the challenges it presents such as curriculum style, teacher qualifications, assessment and accountability, pacing, and developing thinking skills for a theory-based course are discussed. I also offer activities with accompanying worksheets and graphic organizers that may assist teachers in meeting these challenges. The activities include tariffs, a run on the bank, monopolies, and recessions as an introduction to basic economic principles that are important in teaching U.S. History. A set of graphic organizers on The Civil War demonstrates how economics …
