Element Ratios And Aquatic Food Webs, R. Eugene Turner Aug 2002

Element Ratios And Aquatic Food Webs, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Organic matter is the result of concentrating a few non-metals that are relatively rare in the earth’s crust. Most of these essential elements are in a rough proportionality within phylogenetic groupings. Life is thus working against a concentration gradient to extract or accumulate these elements, and this metabolic work is accomplished in interrelated and often subtle ways for many other elements. The physiological requirement to sustain these elemental ratios (commonly discussed in terms of the N∶P ratios, but also C∶N, C∶P, and Si∶N ratios) constrains organization at the cellular, organism, and community level. Humans, as geochemical engineers, significantly influence the …

Adolescents At Work: Gender Issues And Sexual Harassment, Susan Fineran Phd, Licsw

School of Social Work

This study by Dr. Susan Fineran, Professor Emerita, University of Southern Maine, describes adolescents' experiences with sexual harassment while working part-time and attending high school. In a sample of 712 high school students, 35% of the 332 students who work part-time report experiencing sexual harassment (63% girls, 37% boys). Results revealed that there are differences in the experience of sexual harassment by gender, work relationship, and emotional reaction. Students experienced harassment from supervisors (19%), coworkers (61%), and unidentified others at work (18%). Girls reported being significantly more upset and threatened by the sexual harassment they experienced at work than boys …

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Herpesvirus B (Cercopithecine herpesvirus 1) has been implicated as the cause of approximately 40 cases of meningoencephalitis affecting persons in direct or indirect contact with laboratory macaques. However, the threat of herpesvirus B in nonlaboratory settings worldwide remains to be addressed. We investigated the potential for exposure to herpesvirus B in workers at a “monkey forest” (a temple that has become a tourist attraction because of its monkeys) in Bali, Indonesia. In July 2000, 105 workers at the Sangeh Monkey Forest in Central Bali were surveyed about contact with macaques (Macaca fascicularis). Nearly half of those interviewed had …

Bindley Publications

Biosynthesis of the isoprenoid precursor isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) proceeds via two distinct pathways. Sequence comparisons and microbiological data suggest that multidrug-resistant strains of gram-positive cocci employ exclusively the mevalonate pathway for IPP biosynthesis. Bacterial mevalonate pathway enzymes therefore offer potential targets for development of active site-directed inhibitors for use as antibiotics. We used the PCR and Enterococcus faecalis genomic DNA to isolate the mvaS gene that encodes 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) synthase, the second enzyme of the mevalonate pathway. mvaS was expressed in Escherichia coli from a pET28 vector with an attached N-terminal histidine tag. The expressed enzyme was purified …

Iordanov, Remy J. Choi, Olga P. Ryabinina, Thanh-Hoai Dinh, Robert K. Bright, Bruce E. Magun

CUP Faculty Research

In mammals, UVB radiation is of biological relevance primarily for the cells of the epidermis. We report here the existence of a UVB response that is specific for proliferating human epidermal keratinocytes. Unlike other cell types that also display a UVB response, keratinocytes respond to UVB irradiation with a transient but potent downregulation of the Ras-extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling cascade. The downregulation of ERK precedes a profound decrease in the steady-state levels of cyclin D1, a mediator of the proliferative action of ERK. Keratinocytes exhibit high constitutive activity of the Ras-ERK signaling cascade even in culture medium lacking supplemental …

Differing Death Scenarios: Self Esteem And Death Anxiety., Kenneth Grant Brewer Aug 2002

Differing Death Scenarios: Self Esteem And Death Anxiety., Kenneth Grant Brewer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has found a correlation between death anxiety and self esteem. Researchers have found that both self-esteem and death anxiety play a significant role in an individual's behavior.

The purpose of this study was to investigate a correlation, if any, between death anxiety and self esteem using death related scenarios. It was hypothesized the high death anxiety groups will have lower self-esteem than the low death anxiety group, and that the low self-esteem group will have higher death anxiety than the high self-esteem group.

Results of an ANOVA indicate that there is a significant difference between the high death …

Demography And The Long-Run Predictability Of The Stock Market, John Geanakoplos, Michael Magill, Martine Quinzii

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Stock market price/earnings ratios should be influenced by demography. Since demography is predictable, stock returns should be as well. We provide a simple stochastic OLG model with a cyclical structure that generates cyclical P/E ratios. We calibrate the model to roughly fit the cyclical features of historical P/E ratios.

Waiting To Exhale?: Global Warming And Tax Policy, Roberta Mann Aug 2002

Waiting To Exhale?: Global Warming And Tax Policy, Roberta Mann

American University Law Review

This article explores the links between energy policy, tax policy and global warming. This article focuses on tax policy, because the emerging consensus among legal scholars favors economic incentives rather than command-and-control regulations for reaching environmental goals, and the Federal income tax has proved an effective delivery system for economic incentives.

After briefly discussing of the science of global warming and the provisions of the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change, the article reviews the impact of both existing tax law and current proposals for energy legislation on global warming, as well as potential international law consequences of failure to act …

Examination Of Small Mammal Diversity In The Riparian Areas Of Walden, Tennessee, Forrest Brown Vanderbilt Aug 2002

Examination Of Small Mammal Diversity In The Riparian Areas Of Walden, Tennessee, Forrest Brown Vanderbilt

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Vanderbilt, Forrest B. Examination of Small Mammal Diversity in the Riparian Areas of Walden, Tennessee Thesis under the direction of Robert D. Keller, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Biology It has been hypothesized that riparian zones are prime conservation habitats and can be used as indicators of general ecosystem health (Montgomery 1996). Riparian zones, comprising a range of habitat types, typically exhibit higher biotic diversity when compared to adjacent upland hardwood forests (Batzli 1977, Cross 1985a, Cross 1985b, Doyle 1985, Knopf et al. 1988, Doyle 1990, Naiman and Decamps 1997, Ellison and van Riper III 1998, Olson and Knopf 1998). Weir River Area Of Critical Environmental Concern: Natural Resources Inventory, Urban Harbors Institute, University Of Massachusetts Boston

Urban Harbors Institute Publications

The Weir River Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) was designated by the Massachusetts Secretary of Environmental Affairs in 1986 in recognition of one of the largest and most productive salt marsh ecosystems in the Boston Harbor area. As an ACEC, the region is afforded additional attention and protection from state agencies in order to achieve the goals of designation--to restore, enhance, and manage the resources. The region was nominated by residents of the abutting communities of Hull, Hingham, and Cohasset who took the opportunity to call attention to the uniqueness of the environment and to their concerns that development …

The Relationship Between Self-Reports Of Delinquent Behaviors And Adolescents' Perceptions Of Parental Care And Protectiveness, Jacqueline A. Bleess Aug 2002

The Relationship Between Self-Reports Of Delinquent Behaviors And Adolescents' Perceptions Of Parental Care And Protectiveness, Jacqueline A. Bleess

Theses and Dissertations

The current study examined adolescents’ perceptions, in regards to parent levels of Caring and Overprotection, as correlates of self-reported delinquent behaviors in 135 males and female adolescents. As hypothesized, the results showed correlations between perceived Parental Care and self-reported levels of delinquent behaviors in both males and females. This study has shown that more males than females report participation in delinquent behaviors. As hypothesized, low levels of perceived Parental Care correlated to both male and female adolescents’ self-reports of delinquent behaviors, but overprotection (high overprotection) did not. The strongest predictor of adolescent participation in delinquent activities is the adolescents’ perception …

Relative Survival Of Three Sizes Of Walleyes Stocked Into Illinois Lakes, Ronald C. Brooks, Roy C. Heidinger, R John Hoxmeier, David H. Wahl Aug 2002

Relative Survival Of Three Sizes Of Walleyes Stocked Into Illinois Lakes, Ronald C. Brooks, Roy C. Heidinger, R John Hoxmeier, David H. Wahl

Publications

The ability to differentially batch-mark several size-groups of fish stocked concurrently in lakes or rivers makes it possible to compare survival within a single year. We evaluated stocking of walleyes Stizostedion vitreum in Illinois during 1991–1996. Ten lakes were stocked with combinations of two or three sizes of walleyes, including fry and small (50-mm) and large (100-mm) fingerlings. This permitted a total of 73 lake-year comparisons: fry versus large fingerlings (23 lake-years), fry versus small fingerlings (29 lake-years), and small versus large fingerlings (21 lake-years). Stocked fish were differentially marked with oxytetracycline or fin clips. Electrofishing catch per effort, relative …

A Mitochondrial Dna Phylogeny Of The Leptodactylus Fuscus Species-Complex (Leptodactylidae: Anura, Arley Camargo

Master's Theses

Leptodactylus fuscus is a broadly distributed frog species in the Neotropical region. Previous allozymic evidence supported the hypothesis of L. fuscus as a composite of several species. However, morphological and advertisement call data supported the hypothesis of a single-species taxon. These competing hypotheses were evaluated using cladistic analyses of mitochondrial DNA sequences. Fragments of 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA, and ND1 protein-coding genes from 17 populations were sequenced. Phylogenetic analyses were performed using: maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian analysis. Data sets were analyzed separately and combined. Analyses of the combined data set show four exclusive clades of L. fuscus: …
