Use Of Main Or Branch Library Web Pages On Public Access Computers In Academic Branch Libraries: Results Of A Listserv Inquiry, Anita Breckbill, Virginia A. Baldwin

Some academic branch libraries display a main library Web page as the default home page for their public computers. Others display a branch library page. In response to an inquiry sent to selected listservs, librarians from sixty-three academic institutions provided information about the choice and content of their default home pages. Although the numbers from the study do not clearly favor either choice, this paper, in summarizing the librarians' input, provides insight into other available options and the considerations that contribute to maximum user benefit for a given library and library system.

U.S. National Park Service Submerged Resources Center archaeologists and University of Nebraska-Lincoln metallurgists are assessing hull corrosion by drilling through accumulated concretions and measuring pH and corrosion potentials. Concretion samples are being analyzed to determine the role of microbes in the corrosion process, identify chemical species, and measure electrical and physical properties. The lowest values of pH and E corr occur at the metal/concretion interface. Analysis suggests a variable corrosion rate supported by hydrogen discharge and/or oxygen reduction inside the concretion.

NAD(H)-dependent L-alanine dehydrogenase (EC 1.4.1.1) (Ald) catalyzes the oxidative deamination of L-alanine and the reductive amination of pyruvate. To assess the physiological role of Ald in Mycobacterium smegmatis, we cloned the ald gene, identified its promoter, determined the protein expression levels, and analyzed the combined effects of nutrient supplementation, oxygen availability, and growth stage on enzyme activity. High Ald activities were observed in cells grown in the presence of L- or D-alanine regardless of the oxygen availability and growth stage. In exponentially growing cells under aerobic conditions, supplementation with alanine resulted in a 25- to 50-fold increase in the …

The application of compost or fertilizer at rates that exceed crop nutrient requirements can result in phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) accumulation in soil. This study was conducted to determine the influence of soil P and N contents on the concentrations and total amounts of P and N transported in runoff. Composted beef cattle feedlot manure or inorganic fertilizer were added from 1992 to 1995 to a Sharpsburg silty clay loam soil at rates sufficient to meet P or N requirements for corn and incorporated following application. The specificity of the ATP:corrinoid adenosyltransferase (CobA) enzyme of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium LT2 for its nucleotide substrate was tested using ATP analogs and alternative nucleotide donors. The enzyme showed broad specificity for the nucleotide base and required the 2’-OH group of the ribosyl moiety of ATP for activity. ³¹P NMR spectroscopy was used to identify inorganic triphosphate (PPP_i) as the byproduct of the reaction catalyzed by the CobA enzyme. Cleavage of triphosphate into pyrophosphate and orthophosphate did not occur, indicating that triphosphate cleavage was not required for release of the adenosylcorrinoid product. Identifying protein surface regions preferentially recognizable by antibodies (antigenic epitopes) is at the heart of new immuno-diagnostic reagent discovery and vaccine design, and computational methods for antigenic epitope prediction provide crucial means to serve this purpose. Many linear B-cell epitope prediction methods were developed, such as BepiPred, ABCPred, AAP, BCPred, BayesB, BEOracle/BROracle, and BEST, towards this goal. However, effective immunological research demands more robust performance of the prediction method than what the current algorithms could provide. Hyaluronan (HA), a secreted glycosaminoglycan component of extracellular matrices, is critical for cellular proliferation and motility during development. However, elevated circulating and cell-associated levels correlate with various types of cancer, including prostate. We have previously shown that aggressive PC3M-LN4 prostate tumor cells synthesize excessive HA relative to less aggressive cells, and express correspondingly higher levels of the HA biosynthetic enzymes HAS2 and HAS3. Inhibition of these enzymes by stable transfection of PC3M-LN4 cells with anti-sense HAS2 or HAS3 expression constructs diminishes HA synthesis and surface retention. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of insulin resistance syndrome among type-II Saudi diabetics. METHODS: The study involved type-II Saudi diabetics followed at the Out-patient Clinic of King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, from January 1997 to December 1998. Their age, sex and body mass index was recorded. Serum samples were analyzed for glucose. Insulin C-peptide level and insulin glucose index was calculated. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the enteropathogens in children with diarrhea attending Salmaniya Medical Complex, Bahrain. METHODS: Fecal samples from 805 children up to 15 years were examined for parasites, ova and cysts by direct wet preparation, formol-ether concentration and modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain, during the period November 1998 through to June 2000. Samples were cultured for Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter and Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli. Antibiotic sensitivity tests were performed on the relevant clinical isolates by agar disk diffusion method. Standardized extract from the leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree, labeled EGb761, has been used in clinical trials for its beneficial effects on brain functions, particularly in connection with age-related dementias and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Substantial experimental evidence indicates that EGb761 protects against neuronal damage from a variety of insults, but its cellular and molecular mechanisms remain unknown. Using a neuroblastoma cell line stably expressing an AD-associated double mutation, we report that EGb761 inhibits formation of amyloid-β (Aβ) fibrils, which are the diagnostic, and possibly causative, feature of AD. [1] The short-lived but intense discharge of freshwater from tropical rivers into the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) Lagoon and the associated salinity reductions are a critical consideration in marine research and management of the ecologically sensitive GBR World Heritage Area. Salinity provides a unique tracer that gives clues to the origin of river-borne contaminants and allows the influences of storm-induced resuspension and river discharge on turbidity to be clearly distinguished. The genus Proceratoprhrys is poorly known. It consists of 14 currently recognized species (Frost, 2000) of medium-sized frogs distributed from northeastern Argentina and Paraguay to southeast Amazonia (Rondonia State), eastern and southern Brazil. Proceratophrys avelinoi was described from Misiones, Argentina (Mercadal de Barrio and Barrio, 1993). The larval stage of this species is unknown. Herein, we describe the tadpole and the characteristics of the internal oral anatomy of P avelinoi using scanning electron micros- copy (SEM).

The research attempts to explore the historical base from which ‘Healthy Ageing’ has been conceptualized in both Western and Chinese societies. This study also tries to provide an overview of literature that relevant to the ‘Healthy Ageing’ concept, and to provide an initial theoretical framework of ‘Healthy Ageing’ in a Hong Kong Chinese context.

Lichen has been used as a bioindicator of disturbance and pollution effects for over 100 years, however little is known about the relevance of lichen as a bioindicator in the tropics. Increasing fragmentation of tropical forest is leading to increased forest area along exposed edges. Also increased energy consumption is increasing levels of air pollution. Understanding the effects of pollution and edges on lichens in the tropics can have important implications for conservation. It has been observed that birds are more common in forest habitats then along the edge of pastures. This study investigates the idea that birds forage less frequently in pastures and along forest edges and therefore that fewer seeds are dispersed in pastures than in forest. This would affect forest composition along edges and duration of reforestation. Clay fruits were placed on a gradient from forest to pasture, and the number of “fruits” with peck marks at each distance was recorded. The Qualitative Report

This article addresses the question of subjectivity in research. In order to facilitate the use of subjectivity in a research context, the author reminds readers of possible procedures as suggested in the literature. Particular attention is given to the idea of peer debriefing. Inspired by psychoanalysis, the author expands on the concept of discussant or debriefer and suggests that by doing so, subjectivity can be better understood. It is suggested that this may actually be fully integrated into a study in order to both better understand the subject under examination as well as the influence of the research mentor and …
