Research Notes: Marijuana Use Among High-School Students In Guam, Thomas K. Pinhey, John W. Carpenter Jr., Michael P. Perez, Randall L. Workman

Pacific Studies

This study aimed to provide an estimate of the prevalence of marijuana use among Guam's high-school youth and to explore the potential protective and risk factors associated with its use. Using a probability sample (n = 589), our findings revealed that 51 percent of respondents said that they had used marijuana at least once during their life. Males reported using marijuana more frequently than did female respondents. Higher grades and being female were each associated with significantly lower levels of marijuana use. Contrary to predictions, students that discussed their problems and worries with adults, and students that participated in high-school …

Eye Suppression, A Novel Function Of Teashirt, Requires Wingless Signaling, Amit Singh, Madhuri Kango-Singh, Y. Henry Sun

Teashirt (tsh) encodes a Drosophila zinc-finger protein. Misexpression of tsh has been shown to induce ectopic eye formation in the antenna. We report that tsh can suppress eye development. This novel function of tsh is due to the induction of homothorax (hth), a known repressor of eye development, and requires Wingless (WG) signaling. Interestingly, tsh has different functions in the dorsal and ventral eye, suppressing eye development close to the ventral margin, while promoting eye development near the dorsal margin. It affects both growth of eye disc and retinal cell differentiation.

In May 1991, President George H. Bush signed into law the Niobrara Scenic River Designation Act, which gave federal scenic-river designation to a 70-mile stretch of this northern-Nebraska river. The successful effort to protect this river was a protracted, often acrimonious battle, pitting Nebraska neighbors against each other. Interested parties found themselves on opposing sides of a seemingly insurmountable divide, either believing that this river resource should be given federal protection to preserve it unimpaired for future generations, or arguing that the local people should be allowed to determine the fate of “their” river without federal interference. Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

We combine the theory of inside-source/inside-detector x-ray fluorescence holography and Kossel lines/x ray standing waves in kinematic approximation to directly obtain the phases of the diffraction structure factors. The influence of Kossel lines and standing waves on holography is also discussed. We obtain partial phase determination from experimental data obtaining the sign of the real part of the structure factor for several reciprocal lattice vectors of a vanadium crystal.

Reduced Reproductive Effort In Male Field Crickets Infested With Parasitoid Fly Larvae, Gita R. Kolluru, Marlene Zuk, Mark A. Chappell

Some populations of the field cricket Teleogryllus oceanicus are parasitized by the phonotactic fly Ormia ochracea. Flies locate crickets by their song and deposit larvae onto them. The larvae develop inside the cricket for 1 week before killing the host upon emergence. The reproductive compensation hypothesis predicts that parasitized crickets should increase their reproductive effort during the initial stages of infestation to offset the loss of fitness resulting from their shortened life span. An alternative hypothesis predicts that parasitized crickets will decrease reproduction, either because they are unable to reproduce or because selection acting on the parasitoid favors decreased …

The laws of war govern the weapons and tactics that belligerents may use against each other. This paper uses a model of conflict to explain and evaluate the laws of war. In the model a nation’s propensity to engage in conflict is a positive function of the effectiveness of military technology, and a negative function of the destructiveness of technology. Accordingly, in theory nations would want to agree to laws of war that permit destructive weapons and tactics but limit their effectiveness. However, nations with different endowments and resources will enjoy differential advantages, and this makes agreement on specific laws …

The purpose of this study is to find out the degree of feeding specialization of three nectarivorous bats - Anouri geoffroyi, Glossophaga commissarisi, and Hylonycteris underwoodi - that occur in the Cloud Forest of Monteverde, Costa Rica. The bats were mist netted for a total of nine nights distributed evenly throughout a month, and pollen loads were taken from the chest, head, and back of each bat and placed onto individual slides for the different body parts where the pollen was extracted. A study of the Common Pauraque (Nyctidromus albicollis) was conducted in an area of Costa Rica that has a pronounced dry season. The mean frequency of calls per minute, number of consecutive minutes of calls, and starting times of vocalizations at dusk were recorded. The mean frequency of Common Pauraque calls per minute, number of consecutive minutes of calls, and maximum number of calls per minute were not direct functions of percent moon face illumination, (Regression, R2 = 0.064, p = 0.1366; Regression, R2 = 0.257, p = 0.0269; Regression, R2 = 0.095, p = 0.2286) respectively. Butterflies have evolved morphological and behavioral characteristics that are thought to inhibit predation. This study ties wing characteristics, flight patterns and speeds, and activity patterns of butterflies with their palatability. Wing loading, wing toughness, scale density, flight speed, sporadicity, wing flaps, and behaviors such as feeding, resting, flying, and chasing were all compared for palatable species and unpalatable species of butterflies in Costa Rica. Palatable butterflies were found to have faster flight and higher sporadicity than unpalatable butterflies. No significant trends were found with wing loading, wing toughness, or scale density. Bats are known to host a wide range of both parasitic and non-parasitic arthropods on or around the pelage and wing membranes. The purpose of this study is to assess these macro and microscopic arthropod communities living on nectivorous bats, in an attempt to find patterns of arthropod load frequencies between sexes and among species. Bats were mist-netted at the Monteverde Hummingbird Gallery, for seven nights, with a total of 86 individuals examined from six different species. Macroparasites were counted and recorded; microparasites were then extracted from the bat by means of Scotch tape and aspiration. Analysis of Variance showed …

In this study, a novel system in which a notodontid moth larva (Family Notodontidae) uses Lycopodium clavatum (Family Lycopodiaceae), a cosmopotlitainly distributed clubmoss, as a hostplant. The larva and itself is host to no fewer than three parasitoid wasp species, including two ectoparasites, one of which is from the Ichneumonid genus Netelia. Distribution of larvae and damage to reproductive structures by larvae within the L. clavatum population are explained in terms of potential resource preference by the larvae. Larvae do not exhibit any measurable preference for reproductive structures with a given number of stobili, a character known to be associated …

The use of living organisms to assess water quality is a century old approach (Cairns and Pratt 1993). Widespread use of this method of evaluation has been common in North America and Europe (Metcalf 1989), yet it has not been applied in the Tropics. Here I present a test and alternatives to Hilsenhoff’s (1977, 1982, 1987) methodology for assigning Family Biotic Index values (a measure of pollution tolerance) to macroinvertebrates in a tropical premontane moist/wet forest (Holdridge 1967). Fundamental features of microbial cellulose utilization are examined at successively higher levels of aggregation encompassing the structure and composition of cellulosic biomass, taxonomic diversity, cellulase enzyme systems, molecular biology of cellulase enzymes, physiology of cellulolytic microorganisms, ecological aspects of cellulase-degrading communities, and rate-limiting factors in nature. The methodological basis for studying microbial cellulose utilization is considered relative to quantification of cells and enzymes in the presence of solid substrates as well as apparatus and analysis for cellulose-grown continuous cultures. A comprehensive assessment of the determinants of effective population size (Ne) requires estimates of variance in lifetime reproductive success and past changes in census numbers. For natural populations, such information can be best obtained by combining longitudinal data on individual life histories and genetic marker-based inferences of demographic history. Independent estimates of the variance effective size (NeV, obtained from life-history data) and the inbreeding effective size (NeI, obtained from genetic data) provide a means of disentangling the effects of current and historical demography. The Effects Of Cycling Shoe Outsole Material On Plantar Stress., Nathan Edward Jarboe

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if cycling shoes made with stiff material cause an increase in peak plantar stress over shoes with less stiff material. Shoe stiffness measurements were collected under controlled conditions and in two different configurations using a dynamic hydraulic tensile testing machine. Measurements of plantar stress were taken while subjects pedaled in a seated position at a controlled power output of 400 Watts. Capacitive-based sensor insoles were placed in the shoes to measure the peak stress under each foot during pedaling. The shoes made with carbon fiber produced peak plantar stresses 18% higher than …

The author cuts through the myriad interpretations surrounding the concept and gets back to the original idea as conceived by its author, the Prussian military theorist, Carl von Clausewitz. In going back to the original concept, Lieutenant Colonel Echevarria reveals that Clausewitz intended the center of gravity to function much as its counterpart in the mechanical sciences does, that is, as a focal point. He thus argues, quite persuasively, that the Clausewitzian center of gravity is not a strength, nor a weakness, nor even a source of strength. This article is an exploration of the barrier island's unique landform and the solution to its protection. By using Fire Island, a critical barrier island off the coast of Long Island, New York, as a case study, this article attempts to offer a paramount solution, "the beach zone." The authors begin by discussing the natural processes of the barrier islands, focusing on tidal cycles, sea level rising, and periodic storm surges, which threaten development on them.
