Strawberry Anthracnose: Histopathology Of Colletotrichum Acutatum And C. Fragariae, Kenneth J. Curry, Maritza Abril, Jana B. Avant, Barbara J. Smith

Faculty Publications

Ontogeny of the invasion process by Colletotrichum acutatum and C. fragariae was studied on petioles and stolons of the strawberry cultivar Chandler using light and electron microscopy. The invasion of host tissue by each fungal species was similar; however, each invasion event occurred more rapidly with C. fragariae than with C. acutatum. Following cuticular penetration via an appressorium, subsequent steps of invasion involved hyphal growth within the cuticle and within the cell walls of epidermal, subepidermal, and subtending cells. Both species of fungi began invasion with a brief biotrophic phase before entering an extended necrotrophic phase. Acervuli formed once …

Bluetooth: An Emerging Technology For Wireless Personal Area Networks, Eric S. Hall, Charles D. Knutson, David K. Vawdrey

Faculty Publications

Look under your desk or behind your computer. See that rat’s nest of wires and cables? Almost every cable or wire that tethers us to our devices (or our devices to one another) is unnecessary. Bluetooth wireless technology promises to reduce the cabling chaos that afflicts us all. Bluetooth is a recently developed technology that uses radio frequency (RF) transceivers to provide point-to-multipoint wireless connectivity within a personal space. Bluetooth was designed for both voice and data communication at low per-unit costs while consuming little power. To achieve the cost and power goals, Bluetooth limits connectivity to a sphere of …

Direct Estimation Of Aboveground Forest Productivity Through Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Of Canopy Nitrogen, Marie-Louise Smith, Scott V. Ollinger, Mary E. Martin, John D. Aber, Richard A. Hallett, Christine L. Goodale Oct 2002

Direct Estimation Of Aboveground Forest Productivity Through Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Of Canopy Nitrogen, Marie-Louise Smith, Scott V. Ollinger, Mary E. Martin, John D. Aber, Richard A. Hallett, Christine L. Goodale

Faculty Publications

The concentration of nitrogen in foliage has been related to rates of net photosynthesis across a wide range of plant species and functional groups and thus represents a simple and biologically meaningful link between terrestrial cycles of carbon and nitrogen. Although foliar N is used by ecosystem models to predict rates of leaf‐level photosynthesis, it has rarely been examined as a direct scalar to stand‐level carbon gain. Establishment of such relationships would greatly simplify the nature of forest C and N linkages, enhancing our ability to derive estimates of forest productivity at landscape to regional scales. Here, we report on …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Titanium lumbar interbody spinal fusion devices are reported to be 90% effective for single-level lumbar interbody fusion, although radiographic determination of fusion has been debated. Using blinded radiographic, biomechanic, histologic, and statistical measures, researchers in the present study evaluated a radiolucent 70/30 poly(L-lactide-co-D,L-lactide) (70/30 D,L-PLa) interbody fusion device packed with autograft or rhBMP-2 on a collagen sponge in 25 sheep at 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. A trend of increased fusion stiffness, radiographic fusion, and histologic fusion was demonstrated from 3 months to 24 months. Device degradation was associated with a mild to moderate chronic inflammatory response at …

The Equatorial Thermocline Outcroppin - A Seasonal Control On The Tropical Pacific Ocean-Atmosphere Instability Strength, Eli Galanti, Eli Tziperman, Matthew Harrison, Anthony Rosati, Ralf Giering, Ziv Sirkes Oct 2002

The Equatorial Thermocline Outcroppin - A Seasonal Control On The Tropical Pacific Ocean-Atmosphere Instability Strength, Eli Galanti, Eli Tziperman, Matthew Harrison, Anthony Rosati, Ralf Giering, Ziv Sirkes

Faculty Publications

One of the major factors determining the strength and extent of ENSO events is the instability state of the equatorial Pacific coupled ocean-atmosphere system and its seasonal variations. This study analyzes the coupled instability in a hybrid coupled model of the Indo-Pacific region, using the adjoint method for sensitivity studies. It is found that the seasonal changes in the ocean-atmosphere instability strength in the model used here are related to the outcropping of the thermocline in the east equatorial Pacific. From July to December, when the thermocline outcrops over a wide area in the east Pacific, there is a strong …

A Comparison Of The Low Mode And Monte Carlo Conformational Search Methods, Carol A. Parish, Rosina Lombardi, Kent Sinclair, Emelyn Smith, Alla Goldberg, Melissa Rappleye, Myrianne Dure

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The Low Mode (LM) and Monte Carlo (MC) conformational search methods were compared on three diverse molecular systems; (4R, 5S, 6S, 7R)-hexahydro-5,6-dihydroxy-1,3,4,7-tetrakis(phenylmethyl)-2H-1,3-diazapin-2-one (1), 2-methoxy-2-phenyl-2-triflouromethyl-N-α-methyl benzyl propanamide (2) and a trimeric 39-membered polyazamacrolide (3). We find that either method, or a combination of the methods, is equally efficient at searching the conformational space of the smaller molecular systems while a 50:50 hybrid of Low Mode and Monte Carlo is most efficient at searching the space of the larger molecular system.

Electrically Mediated Delivery Of Vector Plasmid Dna Elicits An Antitumor Effect, L. Heller, D. Coppola Oct 2002

Electrically Mediated Delivery Of Vector Plasmid Dna Elicits An Antitumor Effect, L. Heller, D. Coppola

Bioelectrics Publications

In vivo electroporation is an efficient means of increasing plasmid DNA delivery to normal tissues, such as skin and muscle, as well as directly to tumors. In the experiments described here, plasmid DNA was delivered by in vivo electroporation to B16 mouse melanomas using two very different pulsing protocols. Reporter expression increased 21- or 42-fold, respectively with electroporation over injection alone. The growth of experimental melanomas with an approximate diameter of 4 mm on the day of treatment was monitored after electroporation delivery of reporter plasmid DNA. Remarkably, short-term complete regressions using one of these pulsing protocols occurred in up …

Real-Time In Vivo Imaging Of Platelets, Tissue Factor And Fibrin During Arterial Thrombus Formation In The Mouse, Shahrokh Falati, Peter Gross, Glenn Merrill-Skoloff, Barbara C. Furie, Bruce Furie

Articles & Chapters

We have used confocal and widefield microscopy to image thrombus formation in real time in the microcirculation of a living mouse. This system provides high-speed, near-simultaneous acquisition of images of multiple fluorescent probes and of a brightfield channel. Vascular injury is induced with a laser focused through the microscope optics. We observed platelet deposition, tissue factor accumulation and fibrin generation after laser-induced endothelial injury in a single developing thrombus. The initiation of blood coagulation in vivo entailed the initial accumulation of tissue factor on the upstream and thrombus–vessel wall interface of the developing thrombus. Subsequently tissue factor was associated with …

America And The World: Human Rights At Home And Abroad., Joe W. (Chip) Pitts Iii

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

Multiple provisions in the Bill of Rights appear gutted around the last year. While abroad, Mr. Pitts received an outside perspective on American news which provided him with a new outlook on current events. The United Nations Social Forum brought voices into the United Nations which are not typically heard, such as poor and vulnerable populations not represented elsewhere. Concurrently, the Johannesburg Summit addressed similar issues. However, as of late, the American government suppresses the voices of the American people. The Patriot Act includes provisions which deter dissent, freedom of speech, and assembly. This Act also purported to give the …

An Inquiry Into The Application Of A Curriculum Chart In Science Education, Karen R. Fuller Oct 2002

An Inquiry Into The Application Of A Curriculum Chart In Science Education, Karen R. Fuller

Masters Theses

When a teacher decides how to teach science to the classroom of individuals, the fist consideration to make is how to best meet the needs of the students. It is important to know what their prior knowledge is. A science curriculum chart would work like a checklist where the teachers would write when the student learned a science topic and how they succeeded in learning the science concept. The chart would also show education standards and benchmarks met.

The author surveyed West Michigan teachers, K-12, in order to determine if they would value the use of the chart. The teacher …

Summaries Of Arkansas Cotton Research In Progress In 2001, Derrick M. Oosterhuis Oct 2002

Summaries Of Arkansas Cotton Research In Progress In 2001, Derrick M. Oosterhuis

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series

Cotton yields in Arkansas increased steadily during the eighties, but in recent years there has been a leveling off. Of more significance, however, is that extreme year-to-year variability in yields has occurred in the last decade, which is a major point of concern with cotton producers. It has been suggested that this may be related to extreme weather conditions during the boll development period in July and August. Average maximum temperatures in the 2001 season were a few degrees above normal. Recent research in Arkansas has indicated that elevated night temperatures during boll development may be a major contributory factor …

The Effects Of Business-University Alliances On Innovative Output And Financial Performance: A Study Of Publicly Traded Biotechnology Companies, Gerard George, Shaker A. Zahra, D. Robley Wood Oct 2002

The Effects Of Business-University Alliances On Innovative Output And Financial Performance: A Study Of Publicly Traded Biotechnology Companies, Gerard George, Shaker A. Zahra, D. Robley Wood

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Companies in the biotechnology industry face major challenges in developing and commercializing new products. Focusing on publicly traded biotechnology firms that are not members of university incubators or research parks, this paper argues that the links these companies develop with universities can have beneficial effects on a company's operations. Analysis of 2457 alliances undertaken by 147 biotechnology firms shows that companies with university linkages have lower research and development (R&D) expenses while having higher levels of innovative output. However, the results do not support the proposition that companies with university linkages achieve higher financial performance than similar firms without such …

Doming Modes And Dynamics Of Model Heme Compounds, Dennis D. Klug, Marek Z. Zgierski, John S. Tse, Zhenxian Liu, James R. Kincaid, Kazimierz Czarnecki, Russell J. Hemley Oct 2002

Doming Modes And Dynamics Of Model Heme Compounds, Dennis D. Klug, Marek Z. Zgierski, John S. Tse, Zhenxian Liu, James R. Kincaid, Kazimierz Czarnecki, Russell J. Hemley

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Synchrotron far-IR spectroscopy and density-functional calculations are used to characterize the low-frequency dynamics of model heme FeCO compounds. The “doming” vibrational mode in which the iron atom moves out of the porphyrin plane while the periphery of this ring moves in the opposite direction determines the reactivity of oxygen with this type of molecule in biological systems. Calculations of frequencies and absorption intensities and the measured pressure dependence of vibrational modes in the model compounds are used to identify the doming and related normal modes.

A Novel Approach For The Analysis Of High Frequency Vibrations, G. W. Wei, Yibao Zhao, Y. Xiang Oct 2002

A Novel Approach For The Analysis Of High Frequency Vibrations, G. W. Wei, Yibao Zhao, Y. Xiang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Despite much effort in the past few decades, the numerical prediction of high-frequency vibrations remains a challenging task to the engineering and scientific communities due to the numerical instability of existing computational methods. However, such prediction is of crucial importance to certain problems of pressing practical concern, as pointed out by Langley and Bardell (1998 The Aeronautical Journal102, 287-297). This paper introduces the discrete singular convolution (DSC) algorithm for the prediction and analysis of high-frequency vibration of structures. Both a beam and two-span plates are employed as test examples to demonstrate the capability of the DSC algorithm for high-frequency vibration …

The Development Of A Multipurpose Trap (The Nzi) For Tsetse And Other Biting Flies, S. Mihok Oct 2002

The Development Of A Multipurpose Trap (The Nzi) For Tsetse And Other Biting Flies, S. Mihok

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

New trap designs for tsetse (Glossinidae), stable flies (Muscidae: Stomoxyinae), and horse flies (Tabanidae) were tested in Kenya to develop a multipurpose trap for biting flies. Many configurations and colour/fabric combinations were compared to a simplified, blue-black triangular trap to identify features of design and materials that result in equitable catches. New designs were tested against conventional traps, with a focus on Glossina pallidipes Austen and G. longipennis Corti, Stomoxys niger Macquart, and Atylotus agrestis (Wiedemann). A simple design based on minimal blue and black rectangular panels, for attraction and contrast, with a trap body consisting of an innovative configuration …

The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica: Structure And Mechanism Of Co-Catalytic Metal Centers Involved In Peptide Hydrolysis, Richard C. Holz Oct 2002

The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica: Structure And Mechanism Of Co-Catalytic Metal Centers Involved In Peptide Hydrolysis, Richard C. Holz

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Enzymes containing multi-metal active sites are central to numerous biological processes and, consequently, characterization of their structure and function is a problem of outstanding importance. One of the least-explored groups of enzymes is the hydrolases that contain dinuclear metal centers. These enzymes play key roles in carcinogenesis, tissue repair, and protein degradation processes. In addition, some of these enzymes can catalyze the hydrolysis of phosphorus(V) compounds found in nerve gases and agricultural neurotoxins. The determination of detailed reaction mechanisms for these enzymes is required for the design of highly potent, specific inhibitors that can function as potential pharmaceuticals. Hydrolytic enzymes …

Bakhtin And The Rhetoric Of The Modern Western Novel, Douglas J. Massey Oct 2002

Bakhtin And The Rhetoric Of The Modern Western Novel, Douglas J. Massey

English Theses & Dissertations

This thesis uses examples of temporal and spatial intersections (chronotope) provided by noted rhetorician, Mikhail Bakhtin, applying them to a modem Western novel. Bakhtin identifies three primary types of historical chronotope: Ancient Greek Romance, Chivalric Romance, and Rabelasian. The Ancient Greek Romance has three basic types: the adventure novel of ordeal, the adventure novel of everyday life, and ancient biography and autobiography. Certain elements of these three basic types are distinct characteristics that are readily identifiable and, according to Mikhail Bakhtin, "have a direct and unmediated relationship to time,'* (86) which is the dominant principle in the chronotope.

The Chivalric …
